La Casa de Sofia (Sofia's House), the first paediatric intermediate care centre in Spain

SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital leads the running of La Casa de Sofia (Sofia's House), which will care for children from all over Catalonia in collaboration with other centres. Children with rare diseases, complex chronic diseases and end-of-life situations will be treated at this intermediate care centre. The centre was designed by gathering the opinions of families and patient associations and is adapted to the needs they have during their stay, providing personalised care and spaces for families to rest, enjoy some leisure time or socialise. Tools are also provided to train caregivers and make it easier for patients to avoid or delay as far as possible admission to an acute hospital. La Casa de Sofia is part of a broader-ranging project called Red Únicas, sponsored by SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital and involving the participation of 25 large hospitals from all over Spain. The objective is to guarantee comprehensive care for paediatric patients with rare diseases.
