L5P & More with Gale Banks - Diesel Performance Podcast

The legendary Gale Banks returns to the Diesel Performance Podcast. In this episode, Paul, Danny, and Nick Priegnitz learn about Gale's work with the new Duramax engine, the L5P. This episode examines the L5P's bottom end, along with the engine's amazing performance potential. Gale hopes to use the new design to reach 400 mph with a diesel at Bonneville The credit goes to GM, according to Gale. All the new and improved features on the L5P grew from GM's own design team.
Gale and Nick then get into the weeds on DYNO - a mutual topic of interest. Gale believes DYNOs should focus on measuring the horsepower and torque for specific performance applications, like drag racing, sled pulling or engine design. He cannot understand the usefulness of the so-called DYNO-Queens or trucks built for the purpose of hitting a number only.
The podcast with Gale concludes with a detailed discussion about air density in diesel performance. Gale also describes a new device that will measure boost air density called the iDash C(2)i - which stands for command, control, and information.

What I thought when I got the LML. Injector pump committed suicide and took the rest of the system with it, 57,000 miles. Out of warranty. The dealer want s me to get the new truck with the new Duramax engine. “Better, improved, long lasting!!!” It’s exactly what they said when the fuel rails started dumping fuel into my crankcase on the previous Duramax. I’m certain this one will prove to have problems.

Well, as soon as my down payment is saved up, I'm getting an L5P. I just wish the GMC still had red gauges.

The horsepower/torque ratings look good on paper, but what are they like in *real-world* driving? I'm sure there are quite a few vehicles that would benefit from that much power, and OMG! that much torque! :)

I'd rather see guys modding their trucks for working them, not for impressing others, flatbeds, utility beds that really work for you, airbags that help with load leveling, racks and lights for plowing, hidden winches and air supply for recovery or powering tools, engine and transmission tuning for towing heavy loads long distances, reliably and with better mpg and driveability, I could care less if your truck has lift and stacks and a ball sack hanging off your ball hitch, and how much smokes it makes for the truck pull, all that shit is dumb, but that just my opinion and my opinion is irrelevant

I just asked about fuel economy the other day, and I found your video going over the different tunes on the spade(the dyno video) I was interested to hear how you balance the tunes for a stock truck not to exceed drivetrain limits, I am wary of buying used trucks with tuners o them, I'd bet they overdid it with the tuner and roasted something, lol. I heard you guys tune TDIs as well, I have one I'd like to fix up maybe I'll take the drive from Ohio when I get the time, whats a TDI tune cost? and what kinda magic can you work to bump my MPG's?

You're asking a ton of questions and we've got a ton of answers - so the best for both of us is to have you fill out this form and we'll call you at a time that's good for you: info.calibratedpower.com/we-can-answer-that If our tunes roasted parts or broke stuff we would not be in business. We have tens of thousands of satisfied customers throughout North America - so rest assured we would never sell you on a product that would hurt your vehicle. That said - we cannot tune against those who beat the crap out of their truck or add performance parts without reinforcing the engine or transmission against the added stress. That's why we HIGHLY recommend calling us with a list of goals you hope to achieve with your truck. We can coach you through the process.
