L322 - the Last of the Ram Air Rangies!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ram air was deleted from the L405, making the L322 the last rangy with ram air face vents.

IIRC at the time it was reckoned that L322 Rangie had one of the best cabin heating/cooling systems of any vehicle - my 2003 TD6 SE’s aircon was also better than that in the 2010 Vogue which was still pretty good. Definitely the best warm feet cool face stratification I’ve had in any car for both of them though.

I do a lot of miles and fresh air to the face is a big thing for me because I also like toasty toes! I’ll likely agree with you that the L322’s heating is better than any other vehicle I have been in. They really nailed it. My only quibble is that the feet heating could do with more evenly distributing across the footwell (mine focussed on the right foot more than the left). The ram air, in particular, is heads above any other vehicle on the market - past or present)!

Just ran across your video while trying to get some more information on the operation and function of the ram air doors. I’m having an issue with my ‘12 L322 Autobiography. At idle, I’m blowing less than cold, all the way to hot, air from the right side vents. I already replaced the coolant solenoid valves thinking that was the problem. Unfortunately and obviously it wasn’t. My suspicion is that the motor is bad. But, seeing as how the left and right ram air doors are connected, I would expect both sides to be affected. Unless the cable has become disconnected somehow. If you or anyone have any suggestions, I would be very grateful. Thanks

Hmm, that’s a tricky problem. I’ve heard of many issues with the blend doors and so on, but I’ve never had them apart to offer more guidance! Can you tell me more about the fault. I’m not clear what the issue is. In what way is it blowing cold to hot from the right? Is that without adjusting the round temperature control knob on the face level vents? In which case, what is your vent knob set at?

Thanks for the reply. ALLDATA offers very little information about the purpose and function of the ram air doors which apparently work independently from the fresh air/recirculated air doors. With the coolant solenoid valves being replaced, I’m at a loss as to what the problem is

That may very well be the case. What exactly is your problem? In what way do they not work properly? You say you’re getting cold and warm air through, which is correct (depending upon the position of your upper rotary knob).

The dial under the center face vents is, to my understanding, attached to a Bowden cable that operates a blend door. The Ram Air doors are located behind the fresh/recirculated doors which are located at the intake under the cabin filter. The Ram Air door motor is located on the right side of the HVAC distribution box. The Ram air doors are connected to each other by a Bowden cable. So, when the Ram air door is commanded to open or close, both doors move together. The Ram air door motor is on the HVAC LIN BUS along with the motors for the foot vents, face vents, windscreen vents and the rear lower vents. The fresh/recirculated air doors also connected by a cable actuated by a motor on the left side of the HVAC distribution box. It operates on the command of the HVAC module or by pressing the auto/recirc button and is a 4 wire conventional stepper motor. The issue is, the left side vents blow cold as they should. The right side vents will blow hot at idle most of the time. But once I get to about 30 mph, I get cold air again. This happens most of the time but not always. On rare occasion the system works just fine. Desired cabin temperature is achieved by opening or closing left and right coolant solenoid valves via a PWM signal from the HVAC module causing an increase or decrease in heater core temperature. Both heater cores are reporting about 10 degrees F or so above ambient temperature with the AC on. And I confirmed by using an oscilloscope that the coolant solenoid valves are staying closed. So if it’s not a heater core issue, it must be a broken/disconnected/malfunctioning Ram air door issue. Because there is no other variable that will cause an issue on only one side. My issue is, I have no idea what the Ram air doors are supposed to do and what their purpose is. And I can’t find any further information about them

Sorry for the delayed reply, I have been teaching earlier this week and the semester has just started (which means there’s a lot of office hours and ramp up)! I think you have a greater grasp than me of the HVAC system. What I can say, is that the RAM doors isolate the scoop on the bonnet, which does (or doesn’t) deliver outside air into the cabin. I am not sure where the doors are located, I assume that they are prior to the blower motor somewhere along the line. From what I understand, but I might be wrong, the ram air delivers primarily to the face-level vents, which can operate either cooled air or heated air. The latter confuses me a bit, as I am not at all sure how the ducting is managed. I also don’t know if the vehicle operates solely on recycled air if the ram doors are isolated. I am afraid Sam or others may be a better man for me with this kind of content. I hope you get it sorted - I know HVAC stuff can be challenging (not only to get at, but to also diagnose)!

I was not terribly happy with my heater in the defender either. But my issue was that even when directed at your feet it blew on your face as well. I think I show the fault in one of my videos. It was really good at drying your eyes out and not actually making your feet warm. Bad Land Rover!
