L Shaped Seating & Bed - VW T5 Camper Project

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Now all of the camper units are built it's time to get the L shaped seating/bed made. I have decided to go for this over a rock n roll bed as I think it will be more useable.

    If you put some wood underneath the slats, you could then put the hinge on the wood so that both sets of slats lift up when you raise the seat.

    You need to stop being so hard on yourself. I know how it feels being a perfectionist too, it comes with being a trade but that looks awesome and you should be very pleased with the outcome! Awesome work as usual.

    Great job on the van interior Dan, even though the bed coverings are not the best it's still better than some campers I've seen as my Dad was camper mad and he had some nice and big ones over the years but some of these so called professional conversions are pretty crappy. You have done a nice modern and functional conversion Dan something that is usable👏🙏👍

    I think it would be easier just to do one piece foam instead of those 2 long and narrow pieces and the small square. That piece can be fitted as a back rest for the back of the van. Yes it will be taller but I think it will look better. Also it will be easier to do/undo the bed. The only thing missing would be the back rest for the side of the van but in my opinion it would look good without it too.

  • @DanChambersDAC

    @DanChambersDAC

    Nah the way it is done is the best way. It is comfortable to sit on either seat and lean back as they are at the right height to support but also allow you to lean back more. If they were taller you would be more upright. I went through every possible option and this one works the best

    Depending on what changing systems you’re putting in the bunk you may need some ventilation in it I have a Sterling b2b in my kitchen unit and had to put in extra ventilation as the cooling fan in summer would run for a very long time after packing up after a driving the van well done so far looking great Dan.

    Dan this is awesome, I own a MK2 Golf and a T4 Transporter, both projects, this is why your channel started to be of interest, now I watch all your vids, keep them coming fella. Great work! Would love a work shop like that! What would be interesting to know is what its cost you in raw materials to build your camper cupboards and then your bed, therefore giving people a guide of wether they should try to DIY or Purchase a fully made setup?

    Hey Dan, keep up the good work. Re the bed hinge, why don’t you put two slats lengthwise slats like on the top that the widthwise slats slide over. Remove runners on either end. Then the extending bit will left pull up by the new slats. Could even hinge the legs so they drop as you lift it up if you wanted.

    Great video series. Lot of hints and tips. Although I have a question. You made all of those ventilation holes in the cabinets for the mattress to get air. But they are lined with ply. Why do you line them like this? Would foam not be strong enough? Sorry if it's a dull question but seemed a bit odd. Also really enjoying the polo build 👍🏽

    With the bed could you not use the famous IKEA laminated bed slats and have timber battens the entire length and pass one under the other locking them together so that you can still lift them together when they are slide together as the seat base. I think if memory serves me, Dantheman 321 does a similar thing on his builds and he works for a company that does custom Van Builds. I used to watch loads of vans being converted as I was going to go down that road myself of self building. I am wondering why you have a switch for your Solar, as We just run ours straight from the battery charge controller to the battery, we do have a fuse that runs between the panel and the Controller that can act as a switch if we hit the test button. We also have one that runs to the vehicle battery as well as our Controller is a dual charge unit. So once the leisure battery is topped off it then tops off the vehicle battery. The Van is coming along very nicely.
