💈 Kyoto's Little Secret: A Folding Japanese Sink Hairwash & Style With Shimomae-san
Inside Mr. Shimomae’s barbershop is a vintage Takara Belmont sink that folds away into the cabinet with perfect Japanese efficiency!
Do you remember Mr. Shimomae? You can watch our original video with him here👇🏼
• 💈 Traditional Japanese...
Mr. Shimomae was 78 years old when we filmed with him and told us he didn’t need eyeglasses yet 🤓 Each year Mr Shimomae asks us to update his age in the KZread video title to reflect his current age ❤️😊
He has been barbering for 60+ years. Beginning when he was 15 years old and learning from his father who owned this shop. So Mr. Shimomae has been here ever since.
For the past 17 years, he’s been writing a daily blog post ✍🏼 He writes his thoughts about Kyoto, the world, and daily life. Of course, he has seen many changes throughout the years in Kyoto…
✨ What is Mr. Shimomae’s life advice?
“Not rejecting people who come, not chasing after people who leave is best.” -Shimomae Kunihiro
He says that’s always how he tries to live. “People who leave have a reason for that, so you should let them go.”
Mr. Shimomae is happy that customers visit him after seeing the original video we filmed with him in 2019! 🙌🏼 He shows his customers a note stating the following:
“Welcome back. How did you find out about my shop?"
"I have been working as a hairdresser for 63 years. I am 78 years old now. I haven’t built up enough career, but I may not be able to cut your hair to your liking. If you ask me to leave it to you, I will do my best to create your hair and give you a pleasant shave."
"I’m 78 now, but when I was younger, I was good at cutting hair and was able to get the job done quickly. It’s a pity I didn’t have a connection with you when I was young.”
What Mr. Shimomae enjoys most about his work is when customers are satisfied and feel good! 💈❤️

He has the most old school high tech shop i have ever seen. This shop must've been state of the art back in the day.
Mr. Shimomae looks so serious and is silent and Harry is his normal stoic self. It's like the perfect ASMR barbering match!!

Mr. Shimomae looks so serious and silent, just because he is already very old. Monotonous work, constant narrowly focused view. Alas, nothing good awaits him, he had to retire at least 3 years ago and give way to the young.
I love japanese barbers because they are amazing workers and they work as long as they can, they really don't retire unless it is absolutely necessary.. my regular barber in Ireland is 84 years old, he is really old school, wash hair before haircut, hot towel shave after with straight razor, the whole barber experience. he's fantastic.. i love how his shop smells, you get a smell of brut, old spice, shaving cream, It's just an amazing experience. Surprised harry missed him on his visit here.

These old guys are often hard to find, but we can add him to our list of possible shops! You can message us the details via our website 👉🏼 haircutharry.com/contact/ Please include the shop name, address, and why you think it is a good location to feature on Haircut Harry. 🙏🏼

@maidenaholic.. I used to get haircuts from an old school beautician.. she was well in her 70s .. and did better than the barbers in our area although she didn’t shave me , she gave me a razor cut once . She had an older lady there helping her that shampooed me very thoroughly before the haircut .I just didn’t care for the perm smell and hairspray in there .. quite a difference from a barber shop .. I was a bit nervous at first and a little embarrassed being the only 30 yr. old guy in a “ grandma” beauty shop with geriatrics but I couldn’t of asked for a better haircut from the barbers back then. Something about the old school professionals you can’t find anymore. .
More mirror tricks. Brilliant. Always good to see two vids from the same barber. We get to see their full set of skills. You hid it too well Harry. These vids are for relaxation, not treasure hunting.😂

this man deserves everything. he was so professional and calm. it was so relaxing to watch, come back again to him asap!
I continue to appreciate how you showcase the beauty and artfulness of barbering around the world. Each different but each genuine in the art they create.

What an amazing display of old school Japanese Barbering skills. Thank You Harry for helping keep these amazing barbers and their traditions alive! ♥👍💈✂
I always freaked out when I saw the mirror trickery and always wondered why no one else commented on this but happy to read in the comments someone pointing this out. Such a fan of these vids keep ‘em coming Harry !! 😌🙏🏽✂️
Watching a Master at his Work. Thank you Harry for sharing with the world this amazing gentleman.

Haven’t even seen the full video, but I know it’ll be amazing. Keep up the good work. This barber is amazing.
The hair washing tub is so old school I’m in awe of it!!! Reminded me of my first record player.. pulled the handle down and there was the turntable. ❤
I love the sink! They have the coolest things in Japan! Great video! Thank you and blessings, Harry 😁🙏

A quaint little place with a fold-out sink! One of my many stops when I was in Kyoto Last year.
Just amazing especially the hair dryer and style part was so cool ❤❤❤
Mr. Shimomae, wish you good health and happiness.

@HairCutHarry actually you were one of the first people I watched once I learned asmr. First was 3d binary haircuts and then I remember seeing your first video soon after. Then I became a fan. Over the years, you got rid of music(most of us didn't like it), you added interviews(miss it harry) and made longer videos(more work). All for us. It's been awesome to see you be able to travel the world with mystery woman helping us sleep, relax or learn about being a barber. Ive watched so many of your videos that I even know what a SOC is. Lol thanks Harry. Seriously. I think I speak for thousands that you are awesome. Also, shout out to your hair lol without it, well. We have only shaving videos lol

Love that you have been with us since the early days and have seen the changes! @@HairCutHarry I prefer no music as well BUT you did have some great videos that had music but were great. The Peru scissor cut comes to mind. The scissors were so loud that it didn't matter. Its been great to watch the channel grow through the years. You didn't think the India video would amount to anything and yet, you have a giant youtube channel because of it. Just a guy getting a haircut, traveling the world lol
Loving all the videos lately!!

@michaelpoen-zs4dk... we got scrubbed like this when we were kids … my first time in a unisex shop I had my first “ salon “ hair wash. I’ll never forget it, I was rather embarrassed since I was getting my hair washed by a lady older than my grandmother.. she was a bit aggressive shampooing me but I did get a nice haircut.
I can't believe this guy is still alive! Unbelievable. Looking so forward to this
Love the hair styling aspects in these videos

I have alway like how HairCut Harry showcases the Barbers. It is not about HH but the barbers, and their barber shops. I particularly like to watch the technique these barbers have, The scissor vs the clipper, the straight razor vs the Sharpett etc.
Yet another awesome vid from the legendary... Haircut Harry... thanks my friend. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 That water wet enought..?
Japan is the Country with Futuristic Technology ❤
I always wondered, every time I saw the old video, about what those huge white tables/desks are. Now i know they are sinks/wash basins. Wow!
Those fold into the wall sinks are really cool. I see a lot of them in barbering videos from this part of the world, are they very common?
Shimomae-san and Angel from route 66 are the true masters. Would have liked to have seen these two in their prime!
Yeah! Thanks Harry!
I love how the alarm slowly died down it didn’t turn off right away lol that was great

This is what I crave for in a haircut. Attend to detail, pride in craftsmanship, not being on your phone, not mouthbreathing the events of last nights professional wrestling performance into my ear at a tyrannical volumn. You know, little things.😊
