    That 2 speed optima mid motor is sweet! It doesn’t look like the 2 speed from Kyosho. Very interesting. I love it!

    Someone mentioned it might have been borrowed from an AYK setup but honestly I have no idea 🤷‍♂️ the only car I ever had with a 2-speed was a mini mustang but it looked different than this…

    Thanks for the early Christmas treat! 2 BEAUTIFUL legendary cars from Kyosho, totally enjoyed this video! Between the 2, custom TOM definitely stands out, I mean, that neat chain drive, silver machined side frames, solid LeMans motor and gorgeous clear cover for the gears… Plus 2 yellow stick packs for the retro vibes.. what a MACHINE! 👍

    I'm so jealous dude, I sold my Kyosho ZXR when I thought I was done raising, worst decision lol. I'd love one again. I just bought a rereleased Kyosho optima mid, and trying to build it back to how I had mine build before. Super expensive these days lol

    Rich, look for the torpedo Optima, as run at the 87 world's. It was a way to get more weight forwards on the chassis. It originated in the original Lectricar and Slot cars Mirage 1/12 chassis.

    I was so bummed out when I got my first sg Coyote which needs a battery setup like this only to find you can’t really buy them already made up. I had never made my own pack before that - something you guys probably did all the time back in the day!!

    Both or gorgeous cars! Enjoyed watching them run. That field is PERFECT for those cars! I always think about that Optima that did not like the dirt on an old school baseball field! The saddle packs look so good. Would they scrape if you were running it on a rough surface/get scratched up? Those little punks need to get off your lawn!

  • @wadeskelton7585

    @wadeskelton7585

    I think they could scrape actually you’d prolly need an undertray of some sort to keep those batteries protected not to mention the zip ties from getting sheared off. I totally thought those kids were gonna be more persistent but the bugged out before I left - they showed me a secret way in/out so my fat ass doesn’t kill myself climbing that fence 😁

    You have no brakes with the Optima because of the two speed. For the two speed to work the first gear is connected to the layshaft by a one way clutch, so the layshaft can spin faster when the second gear engages. When you brake and the motor slows down the second gear disengages then you have no brakes because the design allows the layshaft to spin faster than than the first gear. Two speeds were a brief thing in the mid 80s when we only had 1200mah and 1400mah batteries, but died out the moment we had batteries capable of running faster motors over the length of a race.

    Dude that’s exactly what I was trying to say in the video except that I didn’t understand how any of it worked 😂 So is there also a one-way bearing on the double pinion as well? I guess I still don’t fully understand 🤣

  • @techspeedrc

    @techspeedrc

    @@wadeskelton7585 in the two speed gearbox, the faster gear is loose on the layshaft and is only connected to it when the clutch is engaged at high speed. The low gear is only attached to the layshaft by the one way bearing, so when you pull the throttle the one way bearing let's the low speed gear drive the layshaft. Both gears are constantly driven by the pinion, the high speed spur gear is always driven faster than the low speed spur by the pinion, the speed change by the gearbox happens when the clutch opens and grabs onto the high speed gear, making the layshaft spin faster than the low speed gear and the one way bearing let's the layshaft spin faster than the low speed gear.
