Kymco ak550 drive belt tension check/ adjustment.

Комедия

Easy procedure to check belt tension and adjust it, if necessary. Adjustment is of course done by releasing main screw of rear axle (120Nm) and use of side screws. Thanks to burgmanusa guy, who first described this procedure, but in slightly different way.

Ever since I had a small bike shop put a new tire on the rear of my AK I have been hearing a strange sound. One person tells me it is probably that the belt is too tight. I think and hope he is right. Because it feels like the belt is pretty tight with no flex at all. I'm going outside right now to try and adjust it a bit more loose and see if that takes care of the sound I hear. Also, my front forks are leaking bad. I tried to clean up around the seals with a tool I bought but that did not work. What sucks is that you have to take half the bike apart to work on the forks and add more fluid/oil to them. And I don't really want to get into that because I worry about getting the dash/screen and all the plastics back together correctly and tight....I bet the guys at the shope where I bought the AK will not be happy about it when I take it to them to fix it.....

Rear wheel may be too far, making the belt overtightened. I really doubt, that this Bike shop had anything to measure belt tension. They probably mounted the wheel just by personal feeling. As for leaking forks, their sealers are damaged, so simple adding of oil won’t help. Forks must be removed and shock absorber seals replaced. As you say, it’s quite complex job, so it would probably be better to take your bike to good bike workshop.

Have you taken your rear wheel off yet? I took mine off to put a new tire on it and now I cannot get the brake caliper to slip down onto the brake disc. I have no idea what could be wrong....I just left it hanging down while I took the wheel to get the new tire on it......

You should have secured the caliper, not letting it hang down, but it is dangerous for brake hoses. Shouldn't cause problems with slipping the wheel back. I guess, that brake pads are not paralell or you even squized brake lever causing them to move. If so, you must restore (or better make as large as possible) the gap between brake pads, gently using some tool. It can be screwdriver or something soft, like woodden stick. Just compress pads against brake piston, you can remove the brake fluid reservoir's cover, it will make things easier. Good luck.

Is the belt supposed to be centered always?

According to my observation, it is very hard to center the belt. Manual says, that there should be more than 1 mm of free space on every side of the belt, so you are setting this by using regulatory screws. Screws position is slightly different in my scooter on each side. But belt’s position varies a bit after riding, so I think it is something different, than centering the wheel in bikes with chain drive. Here it should be more or less centered I suppose.

I just saw this kind of measurement being done using a sonic meter, never by displacement... where you find this relationship between frequence and displacement?

Check the link in description of my video. Idea of checking displacement instead of sonic tension was initially found by burgmanusa user. It is based on theory, that free play of the belt is strictly correlated with its tension, as in cruisers. So the guy took new ak550, with factory belt settings, and just checked initial free play for future service.
