Kyiv's techno scene and Russia's war | DW Documentary
They are young, they love music and they are living in a time of war. Russia's attack on Ukraine has radically changed the lives of people like Dasha, Vika and Sasha. These three left their normal jobs to rebuild their homeland as part of the "Repair Together" initiative.
Repair Together was founded in May 2022 by four creative urbanites from the Kyiv techno scene. Unlike many other aid initiatives, this one combines reconstruction with community, creativity and music. In the summer of 2022, their "reconstruction raves" drew hundreds of volunteers from around the world to clean up and rebuild destroyed villages in northern Ukraine.
But the longer the war lasts and the colder the temperatures get, the harder it gets to maintain the group’s cohesion. Support also threatens to wane. As temperatures drop, people tend to go to indoor techno parties -- not ones held on open-air construction sites. As winter approaches, fewer and fewer volunteers sign up for construction work, forcing the foursome to pause most reconstruction projects until it gets warmer, again.
But Dasha and Vika, two of the organizers of Repair Together, want to continue building a house just before spring. Because they know that if they don't give the family back their home as soon as possible, in all likelihood, no one will. "All hopes are just with NGOs, like ours. Because the state can't help, it's at war. It does not yet have the capacity to build private homes," Vika knows. To attract helpers to their building project even without the "building raves," the two young women are coming up with creative and unconventional ideas for their social media channels. "We want to show: We’re not only building, but also spending a good and exciting time in the village," says Dasha. But given the biting cold, how many participants will ultimately sign up?

Ukraine is a very inspiring place - save up and go there whenever you can, you might find what you need in your life there . I just returned from kyiv back to NYC - didn’t get to go to those tech construction parties but met a renowned French architect who went there and told me how great it was

exactly... that's the msg... but if it takes music to get ppl to do what they should... so be it!... the msg these kids are sending is '' we didn't lose our values to partying and drugs... something I don't see many ppl in the comments stand for... they even said that at some point '' most of them were coming just to be here with us'' and that makes sense too... I bet all able builders are somewhere else building or fighting... so ''doing something is always better than nothing'' and that's what these kids are doing... ''something'' something important!...

Go Ukraine!!! But please don't use phrases closely associated with the 3rd Reich. The people who created that slogan back in the day in Ukraine mass-murdered Pols and Jews. Google up the historical photos of that phrase, it's not pretty.

Sorry, I might ve wrong but i didn't see they did much work related to the construction of the house at least in this video, all i see is them dancing and drinking in their cool outfit and enjoying their cool vibes. And the grandma who already suffered a lot in the war has to prepare meals and even vodka for them every week? 😢😢
Tears glisten in the eye of these lovely youths; mine fall. They defeat the pain with action. Except for that cat, beautiful.
Seeing this much empathy, love and wish to help in these young generations, gives a huge amount of hope in humanity. I never say this, but God bless them 💛

In Kyiv fad for techno has faded around 2016 tbh. There's much more electro sound and last fad - 130bpm ish amen-breakbeats. I mean you can call it techno, but times of all-night long acid/industrial techno are gone. And it's not like time is stuck (unlike some other music places 😉 ), so sound is constantly changing. But yeah, nothing new has been done in years within this genre

Millions of college students would love to rebuild Ukraine for college credits towards architectural and engineering degrees - millions of American retirees would love to live in Ukraine with lower prices spending those SSI checks - overnight a whole new service industry created in Ukraine - those college students with those degrees some will stay and become Ukrainians - boosting Ukraine's productivity - scrap steel everywhere needs to made into tools and equipment - boom times ahead for Ukraine
