Dr Nilesh Chordiya (a GI & gynecologic oncologist with over 10 years of experience in cancer surgery) answered one of our viewers' questions in this video.
Question:
At 17 years old, my CA-125 test showed a result of 223. Could this mean I have ovarian cancer?
Answer:
Ovarian cancer is a serious concern that primarily affects individuals who are older, typically beyond the age of 40. Therefore, at 17 years old, the probability of having ovarian cancer is relatively low. However, it's worth mentioning that there is a specific type of ovarian tumor known as germ cell tumors that can be found in younger individuals. Germ cell tumors originate from the reproductive cells and can manifest as ovarian growths. They are often benign, meaning non-cancerous, but they can occasionally be malignant as well.
The CA-125 test is a blood test that measures the level of a protein called CA-125 in your bloodstream. Elevated CA-125 levels can be associated with various conditions, including ovarian cancer, but they can also be caused by other factors like inflammation or certain non-cancerous conditions. Hence, a high CA-125 level is not a definitive indicator of ovarian cancer on its own.
When a high CA-125 level is detected, it's crucial to proceed with caution and thorough evaluation. Additional tests and scans are typically required to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation. These tests may include pelvic imaging, such as ultrasound or MRI, as well as further blood tests and potentially a biopsy of the ovarian tissue. These follow-up tests help doctors rule out other potential causes of the elevated CA-125 level and provide a more accurate diagnosis.
It's also important to consult with a medical professional who specializes in gynecological health. They will be able to guide you through the diagnostic process, provide expert insights, and tailor the appropriate tests for your specific situation. Remember that while the initial CA-125 result might raise concerns, it's just one piece of the puzzle. The combination of clinical evaluation, additional tests, and consultation with healthcare experts will provide a clearer picture of your health status.
