KUSA KR103 Rifle First Impressions: Authentic AK-103 or Over-Hyped Russian Wannabe?

Ғылым және технология

Lets get up close and personal with the latest release from Kalashnikov-USA. The KR-103 is marketed as an authentic Russian Izhmash AK103 clone; though of course as a semi-automatic only rifle. So basically an American made Saiga SGL21. This is the first time the company has attempted a firearm chambered for the classic 7.62x39mm round, something US AK makers have found difficult in the past. At least, getting it right.

    Superb video as always Misha. Admittedly, I was highly suspicious of KUSA when they first came about, however I can say that they have completely turned my attitude. In only a few years time and having started with nothing, KUSA has successfully become the de facto subsidiary of Kalashnikov Concern in the USA, with the true ability to manufacture what is essentially licenced-production guns. I eagerly look forward to what the future holds for KUSA, as nothing fills me with more happiness than watching a company give a great big middle finger to the russophobic US government.

    I'm not one to defend criminal empires like the U.S. government, but Russia is to blame for these sanctions for its actions in Georgia, Crimea, and Ukraine. Just like the Chinese government before them in 1989, 1993, and 1994, they got sanctions put on them for invading other countries and treating the people like garbage.

  • @killerratchet1973

    @killerratchet1973

    @@RPGGunman These sanctions were targeted against gun owners specifically though, literally designed to cuck us out from lower priced decent/high quality firearms. I doubt Russia is seriously going "ok americanski we won't be bad anymore please let us sell AKs here again". Because these sanctions do almost nothing to them.

  • @RPGGunman

    @RPGGunman

    @@killerratchet1973 These countries have problems with human rights violations, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. I do agree it's inconsistent all across the board. If we really wanted to hurt them, we would need Iran and North Korea style sanctions to economically cripple them. Unfortunately that would still prevent gun and ammo imports from those countries from coming in. The 1934 NFA, 1968 GCA, 1986 Hughes Amendment, and import bans in 1989, 1994-2004, 2014, and 2017 literally made it so we could only choose between limited variations of handguns, shotguns, and rifles. All the most effective stuff like full auto, burst fire, explosive launchers and explosive ordinance in general, "non sporting" semi-auto shotguns, short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns, "any other weapons" aka catch all to stifle innovation, etc. is all unconstitutionally regulated and taxed to death. The extra tax costs, paperwork, turnaround time for approval, and arbitrary ATF decisions are literally there to discourage ownership and make it so we are all effectively neutered, like when rhinos get their horns cut off by poachers.

    For comparison, I have shot a PSA 103 "klone" and it is a fine rifle. However, I will tell you it is not nearly as faithful to the original Kalashnikov pedigree. It DOES have: -military style folding stock (4.5mm) -smooth dust cover -Y stamp on receiver -seemingly identical muzzle brake -FN-stamped CHF CL barrel (not a clone feature, but nice) -90 degree gas block Does NOT have: -thin stem bolt -various niceties around the barrel and smaller items. Bottom-line, the PSA version is like a high-quality AKM with 74/103 cosmetic changes.

    As Misha said, 922 (r) is no issue. What Kalashnikov USA has not yet advertised too much yet is that all the components on this gun are made in USA. Like ALL. Screws, cleaning rod, bolt, trunnion, barrel, furniture. Even the red KUSA case is made 100% in USA. They said this at SHOT last year and it has leaked out in a few other interviews. They are probably waiting until more guns are shipped out to announce this. America really needs a 100% made AK. Not an AK with a US receiver with a bunch of foreign parts stuffed in it, making it technically "Made in USA" but not "100% USA Made."

    I've heard mixed things about those FN barrels *shrug* and keep in mind the KR103 folder will be 5.5mm Izhmash spec. We already see this with the KR9. Also remember that PSA charges extra for the CHF option and the fixed stock is their standard too. I actually think both are good shooters. The KR103 seems to be for those really wanting an SGL21, but not nutty enough to pay $2.5k+ for an as-new in box example. I love the Saiga but current prices are out of sight.

    @@misha5670 You were correct in the video about the PSA 103. It is more of an AKM with a few changes made to resemble a 103. It is closer to an Arsenal 107FR. It does have a smooth dust cover. It has the shorter barrel shroud on the front sight and AKM style bolt and bolt carrier. It does not have the bump rivet. The lack of bump rivet, AKM bolt, and AKM style carrier were deliberate to keep manufacturing costs down (just as the 100 series changes were mostly done for manufacturing costs). Input from someone quite familiar with Russian citizen preferences probably also contributed to the final design. It was designed as a shooter rather than trying to be an exact clone of course.

    Ak-103 is not really different form a standard akm. The differences are mainly in manufacturing quality, all forged parts, fitting, riveting etc. Yes there is stuff like the polymer furniture, the side mount and some minor visual differences when compared to the traditional akm. But calling a gun a 103 clone can only be validated via many rigorous tests. For example the real 103 fired over 1000 rounds with breaks only for reloading and it did not blow up. I'd like to see these "103 clones" tested as well.
