@alexander Yorˋre so very right, he really knew what he was capable of. And I think he gambled with his unique potential whenever needed in his own brilliant, inimitable way. Surely one of the greatest bassos of all times to be enjoyfully listened to.

That low register really is something unique. I have never heard anyone capable of singing a C2 as easily as Moll. It almost sounds as if it were the lower part of his middle voice. I am simply unable to understand how a human being could even produce a well resonating sound at such a low frequency. Absolutely splendid...

Amazing . . . simply amazing! From the clips I've seen of him, Moll was what Henry Pleasants described in "The Great Singers" as a "singing actor" - that is, a person (male or female) who was first and foremost a superb actor but also a fine singer - as opposed to the "acting singer" who reversed the emphases and was a good singer but an indifferent actor; I believe he categorized Lauritz Melchior as an acting singer, incredible though the Dane's voice was. (In his first biography, "5,000 Nights at the Met," Rudolf Bing recounted paying a visit to the Old House shortly before he assumed the managership there; Melchior was singing either Tristan or Lohengrin, and while Bing admired the voice, he described the singer as looking like "a couch upholstered in red plush velvet," an image that has stayed with me for 45 years, although I'm a great fan of The Great Dane.) The clips of Moll as Osmin are hilarious; that unbelievable beard pretty much stole the show on its own! A great, great singing actor was Herr Moll.

Unreal. Would have loved it if he had done the bass part in Mahler 8, which has a low C in octaves with the baritone. I've never actually heard it sung (not that you would hear it much even if it was...)

Those are B-flats, and there are a few recordings where you can hear it. Kent Nagano conducted one such recording. Also Berliner Rundfunkchor will have one I think.

I meant the solo bass part, where there are low Cs in the first movement. The choral B-flats, as Mahler indicates in the second symphony, are not so much to be heard as to prevent the second basses from jumping up the octave.
