Kurt did use (what I can only assume is) the Sansamp and the DS2 together at the same time. I saw it happen on a live performance on MTV. It's been a long time, so my memory isn't perfect but it was after a song Kurt kicked in a second distortion pedal (I never saw the pedals so IDK which ones he used) and the distortion and feedback was just pure noise. Kurt was using both pedals just to create choas, they were not playing any song.
I love how Kurt wasn’t a normal guitar player

To my ears, modern Sansamp sounds thicker in the low end whereas the vintage one has more of a midrange “honk” and a slightly fizzier high end. I personally slightly prefer the modern one but the vintage one definitely sounds more like In Utero. Great video as always!
sansamp classic sounds great but MAN the vintage really just IS that sound

Really? I've heard from other Russians that those were some very hard years for most Russians. Political turmoil, rampant crime, poverty, and the wars in Chechnya all sound difficult to me too, but of course, I didn't live it, so I wouldn't know. I've heard similar things about modern Russia as well, but again, what do I know? Also, why be stuck in the past? Sure, the old bands like Кино are great, but you guys still have a lot of cool artists today. I really like ssshhhiiittt!, Перемотка, Пасош, Плохо, Life on Venus, and many other contemporary bands from Russia. You guys know how to rock! Здравствуй из США. 👋

“Yo! Yo! Yo! Bro! New NirvanaGuitars video just dropped!!! Let’s watch it RIGHT NOW” - my brain when I see a notification from this channel
I usually stay up late just to watch your videos because here in europe it's 5 to 7 hours ahead based on which state you live in. It's really pleasing to just be alone, in the dark, hearing pure nirvana raw sound and history. I'm not from the UK so this also helps me with my english. I know i've said it quite some times in the comment section but i really mean it, we love you Eric ❤
I like the in depth story about the sansamp. Thank you for preserving Nirvana's history and tone!

Super cool to see an original SansAmp on the channel. To my ear, the original sounds a bit more low mid heavy and much darker than the Classic.

I'm hearing awesome and accurate tones all over this video, and I'm thankful for all your care and hard work. Worth noting, though... The SansAmp is an analog unit with analog parts that drift and change over time and weren't even 100% consistent from pedal to pedal way back when. Results may vary, and thats FINE! If Mr. Cobain's SA broke down, he'd have probably gone into the nearest music shop, bought another, and not have really cared about the variance. Please, everyone, don't get discouraged if you aren't dead on.
as a non-guitarist who has been plugging synths and samplers and other things into pedals since the year in utero was released, its crazy to me that i still haven’t heard of anyone else running a cab sim into their hot preamp section on purpose. there’s only the amateur association with the joyo/mooer/etc tier of preamp pedals with a basic fixed speaker sim (basically just a preset filter/EQ) that can’t be turned off without soldering. speakers are an amazing tool for shaping audio, and even the most basic, non-convolution speaker sim can do cool things before a dist/OD type effect or overloaded amp, kurt showed that 33 years ago. try it with an IR sim instead and another dimension can open up. it just seems like a lot of guitarists grow up not having anyone tell them they don’t need permission to try using things “wrongly” and see what comes out.
i like the newer sansamp here. more articulation, clarity, and grit to my ear. the OG sounds very mid range pushed and muddy. great video!
I love this guy's videos they always help me find the right tone for Nirvana songs ❤❤
Are you kidding me? I have been literally checking out youtube past 2 hours for comparisons of the old and new one, as well as ds2 vs sansamp comparisons and some of your sounds using one. And now this! I still havent watched is as I am typing this, but it could not come at any better time! thanks:)
Yooo I watched the whole video! Loved it so much
Love the pedal series!
The Sans amp re-issue definitely has a more 'clean' tone to it, but I think I prefer the original :) Great video
Another great video Eric! The original sounds like it's got some sort of bit crusher on it, it's hard to explain, but both pedals sound very full and thick. Definitely prefer the sansamp to the DS-1, which sounds much thinner in comparison!

Thank you so much! The DS-1 and DS-2 get so much attention that I've always felt I was in the minority by preferring the sansamp over those. Hoping this video will help spread awareness of how amazing and underrated this pedal is!
Whoa, there's such a huge difference between the 2 SansAmps! The vintage one has a fuzziness that reminds me of the old DOD Grunge

Great video, that original definitely sounds closer to the in utero tone for sure. I would love to see a full breakdown on the echoflanger next!
Great video, as always. It is noticeable that the original has a thicker and darker sound than the classic. It would be something incredible if you could see if they have any different components at the electronic level and that is the reason why they sound different.

One of the pedals that I’d like to see covered next is the ProCo Rat. It’s a pedal that Kurt had used for a very short amount of time, and it would be interesting to learn about the way Kurt, Pat, and Krist used their Rat pedals. Pat’s Rat pedal is seen on Live and Loud on his pedal setup, and maybe even used now during the Foo Fighters.

Both sound amazing but when I heard the sound of the vintage Sans Amp I realized how incredible this pedal is! 🤘🏼🎸
Excellent and amazing video, I have always honestly wondered if there was a difference between the classic and vintage tones you could get from the sans amp. And to my ears, it does, but by a small part! The classic Sans amp has a more cleaner, more brighter tone that I think could fill a stadium with. Meanwhile, the vintage is very dirty and has more of a bite and punch, and definitely belongs on an album like In Utreo. I will say too, I love both tones- so I definitely can use the classic and get a beautiful result, however: I really do like the echo flanger effects of Radio Friendly Unit Shifter better on the Vintage Sans amp rather than the Classic. But it's all in my ears and taste. Anyways though, amazing video, you killed it with this one, and I hope your day is great and full of grunge power
It's a good recreation of the tone 😁

ERIC ERIC ERIC GUESS WHAT Brownies👹 Ingredients: 1 cup unsalted butter 2 cups granulated sugar 4 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup cocoa powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped nuts or chocolate chips (optional) Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°F (1/5°€) and grease a baking pan. Melt 1 cup butter, mix with 2 cups sugar. Add 4 eggs and 1 tsp vanilla; mix well. Sift in 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup cocoa, and 1/4 tsp salt; stir. Optional: add 1 cup nuts or chocolate chips. Pour into the pan, bake for 25-30 mins. Cool completely, cut into squares, and enjoy
🤯amazing!
These were popular in the early 90s . A lot of people had them in seattle . I had the OG one. Steel pole bathtub bass tone is one of these also. That’s where we saw it first .
That blown out low end the vintage focuses on is very satisfying. I don't have a twin so I use Sansamp GT2 to model the fender into FX Return then slam GT2 with my vintage Sansamp. Sounds right.

It’s a bit strange how Kurt went from a really high end distortion to a super beefy dark distortion. I’m gonna say the sansamp on in utero sounds the best but that could change for me because I’m really liking the late 1993 tone. Great video! Could you please do cow palace😉
I really like how the vintage sounds with effects and open chords but to my ears the classic sounds better for bar chords. Great deep dive!
Hey, I just got the Classic! Am a long time Nirvana fan and have got the other Nirvanaish pedals for my collection! Really love the IN UTERO live sounds that I can play on the Classic…
This is amazing work. I wish there was someone who dug this deep into the gear of Eddie Hazel (especially from the Maggot Brain era), but there just isn't enough information out there, and not enough photos or video of Eddie playing. I found a pic of him using a Vox wah (and everything I've read said he used a crybaby, which Vox originally made if I remember correctly). Billy Nelson is luckily still alive, but nobody interviews him.
These tones sound great!

Great video! I was actually wondering about a video idea, could you show how to do those iconic guitar squeals that Kurt would do in some of his songs? I think they sound really cool but I have no idea how he did it
I bought the original tech21 SansAmp in 1989 at Sam Ash. I wouldn’t live without it. I remember the plain box and I still have the manual. There were articles about it before it was released.
I use an EHX Neo,a RAT pedal,Vox AC10,Squier Strat, think I need something like this to record with as all my tracks are being recorded direct to PC at mo,and EQd post,so think definately some filtering would be good to complete it.And those mustangs,so easy to forget how good they are.The Squier Mustang with parallel, series, phase switches is rather good.Awesome video.I remember when Teen Spirit echoed around my student house upon release. They played the Riverside here in the UK ,Newcatle,a week before I arrived for music college. It changed everything.Shred became just another optiion! ....rip Kurt.
Vintage hands down. Now I know which one I need to go and get.
I like the classic....the vintage sounds deep ... and more thick.....the classic with the bright switch on... sounds amazing
That vintage sansamp sounds beautiful
I'm convinced we left-handed musicians hear things differently which is why there are many lefties who've been pioneers in the creation of a "sound". Not necessarily the most proficient technical guitarists, Kurt is perhaps the prime example, but each with a defining tone and timbre or use of distortion, Grunge for sure. Tony Iommi created the original sound of Metal, Hendrix expanded the range of the electric guitar that changed music, Paul McCartney's bass playing became a distinct feature of The Beatles, and Dick Dale, Otis Rush and Albert King all with their own special sounds. Then there was Snakefinger, the King of the Southpaws, the most original guitarist who ever lived and taken from us all too soon like Jimi and Kurt.
Nice video eric :D
I was at the Tallahassee show. What a great time to be alive!
My favorite will always be the ds2, but the sansamp is great too, thanks for showing us

I think it would be cool if you explored the In Utero era even more. The biggest change in my opinion was when they added their new member Pat Smear. Seeing what his gear was and what he would play on stage would be really cool!
I admire the dedication to the subject much much respect to you 😎 Btw were Kurt's Strats bridges blocked?
I was quite curious about this pedal's history Also, please do a cover of Sappy!
Great shoot out. The vintage just has the real "In Utero" sound. The classic gets close but Serve the Servants definitely shows the vintage is the one to have.

I love my Tech 21 Blonde and Oxford. They sound especially good with the amp modeller turned off and into a Two Notes M Cab (using the amp modeller on that).
I wonder what was used for the April 1992 Laundry Room session? It sounds like Kurt probably just plugged into Dave’s rig, but would have to have brought a left handed guitar.
Since you've got so many, help a brother out. I've always idolized this pedal, but as I remember, they went for about $1200 in '93. Also, deep dive on the Poly-Chorus, hands down.
I played a fender jagstang through a marshall valvestate 100 back in the late 90's. Sounded nirvana spot on
WOW. To my old ears the Classic has it as more treble, definition and less muddiness. Suspect the High could be dialled back a little to get them even closer if required. Cheers Eric!
There's an old Guitar World interview where he talks a lot about it. I believe it was the first time I read him speaking about the Jagstang, long before there was even a prototype, aside from the Polaroid Photos.
I like the sound of both. The reissue sounds a little more "buzzy". Sounds really good though. That Mr. Cobain was a damn genius.

Drain you sounded really nice 👍
I love your videos. Your work is painstakingly good and you seem like such a likeable person. I prefer the vintage Sans, but from the comments it seems like the classic has won a lot of people over. I feel like the classic Sans kinda sounds like its trying to hard, if that makes sense. Keep up the great work.
Don’t get me wrong. The sansamp is great. But I have a ds1 and that will get you in the ballpark.
14:11 listen to that intro to Serve The servants. That's practically Nu metal right there, all twisted and creepy. I still think Kurt would have loved Nu Metal
love my sansamp. got it refurbished at their HQ in NYC. prolly 17 years ago.

Interesting. Classic has brighter and more "cultural" rounded sound, that marshall-like bright mid-range. Vintage sounds dark and heavy and just awesome, especially for radio friendly unit shifter. Imo it's something like comparing classic and gt2. How vintage sounds while playing with band? Doesn't it interfere with the bass? Good video
Its kind of funny when people talk about KCs tone since he was pretty much known for grabbing whatever was at hand and plugging into whatever wasn't blown up. Granted his recorded stuff on later albums was a bit more conscientious when producers like Butch Vig got involved in some of the gear and technical aspects of his sound. But he was still very much the anti guitar hero archetype that later grungers would follow.
Please make a video on how to lock the mustang tremolo🙏
As an older bloke who grew up in the 80s Glam and shred era "I HATED NIRVANA".!! Fast 4ward some years later, and I am a huge Nirvana fan, and fan "of the whole band", from his songwriting to his guitar, and the others who filled out the whole Nirvana sound. Kurt definitely knew his stuff, no matter how away from this Earth he may have been. Getting back to this video, I think the "Original vintage" pedal sounds more smoother and defined, and the newer "Classis", sounds very fuzzy and brittle. I know it's no comparison to the live videos you compared these against, as arena sounds always sound huge, deep and clear, but my ears tells me the "Vintage" wins hands down. Really good video and comparison.👌👏👏👏👏
Bruh today's my birthday and ur the reason I got a blue squire mustang, they're pretty nice.
it’s interesting off the rip, the difference in the pedals sounds alot like the difference between the mustang and jagstang
