KUNGSLEDEN: A Journey Through Northern Sweden
This documentary tells the story of hiking Kungsleden, of the beautiful untouched Swedish nature, of the long days of hiking and wildcamping and of the interesting people I met along the way.
This film takes you along my hike in August 2020 and my experiences and encounters along the Kungsleden trail. Thank you to all the people that made this possible, especially Klaus, Zina, Marcus, Tomas & Paniz and Per who I interviewed for this documentary. I hope you enjoy this documentary film as much as I enjoyed my hike and producing this film.
Thank you to the STF for providing some comfort like showers, warm fireplaces and holding my parcels along the way, and making the Kungsleden so much more accessible. Thank you to the Swedish provinces for maintaining the trail and making this last European wilderness accessible in a sustainable way.
Feel free to subscribe to my KZread channel for more hiking related content.
And a great thank you to REAL Turmat, Osprey Europe, Hanwag, Pinewood, Darn Tough and many other for supporting me in making this documentary.
*If you want to try the food I ate in this film - which I absolutely love - please visit realoutdoorfood.com/ or my own webshop (Dutch) on www.starthiking.nl/maaltijden .
*On this hike I used the Osprey Exos 58 (www.ospreyeurope.com/shop/nl_...) and Osprey UL raincover L (www.ospreyeurope.com/shop/nl_...) provided by Osprey Europe and they worked like a absolute charm.
* I wore Hanwag Tatra II GTX boots, which are my go to boots for 6 years now www.hanwag.com/nl/nl-nl/heren...
* I also really liked my two pair Darn Tough socks I alternated between on this hike www.groeneavonturier.nl/produ...

Thank you so much! I hope you get to take some time off to hike this trail - it's incredible and so worth it! As for the mosquitoes: I hiked in August, but towards the end of my hike the numbers of mosquitoes were already smaller. In september they are almost gone entirely, while the views are even more spectacular as the surroundings turn to bright autumn colors! Might even catch a glimpse of northern lights! However, there are chances of lower temps and snow and the days shorten quite fast. A great compromise would be to start halfway or at the end of August. Starting late in september does also puts some pressure on your shedule as the boats are taken out and the huts close at the season's ending somewhere towards the end of september.

Hi Steve! It's not a feature, but maybe with some DIY skills you could connect a footprint to the corners, as there are clips in the corners for the inner tent. However, I didn't use a footprint. The floor of the tent is extremely durable and has served me for years without groundsheet with some precautions. If you would like to use one, most Tarptent users take a tyvek sheet and place it under the tent flooring. Tarptent even sells tyvek foot prints to the exact measurements. I would use it in extremely rocky areas or desert grounds. Although on the kungsleden you have to be careful with the scrubs too.

Thank you! And great to hear your planning too. I shipped food to resupply points along the way: Ammarnäs (supermarket), Jackvik (supermarket), Kvikkjokk (fjallstation), Saltoluokta (fjallstation). I emailed them beforehand to ask if they could hold my parcels. The fjallstations have a system, you pay a small fee. In Ammarnas you could contact Wardshus and in Jackvik the hostel (in the movie) as well. For me there were multiple reasons to ship food ahead. For one: I planned my food to my hiking planning with regards to calories and stuff. I also wanted to eat REAL Turmat, which they don't sell along Kungsleden. Most of the food is Adventure Food and some other brands like 24H meals. That is the third reason: supplies are limited. Freeze dried food is not sold everywhere, and when it is there are just a couple of flavors to choose from. And fourth: the prices along the trail are steep, so shipping is not more expensive while you get to pick your supplies as you like. I also shipped toilet paper, toothpaste and snacks like chocolate etc. There are supply points along the way. Ammarnäs has a supermarket. Jackvik a big supermarkt with a small selection of freeze dried food. The Fjallstations and some huts also sell a small selection. I relied on these places to hold my parcel, but also to buy gas canisters (primus), ice cream, chocolate, and other snacks to supplement my own. Because you can not have too many snacks when out hiking! One thing to consider is the post in Northern Sweden. It is very unreliable. All my parcels arrived, but some took 3 weeks (while the Dutch post estimated 3 to 4 days). Based on the labels, some parcels went through as much as 4 different postal companies. If you have the chance to ship directly from Sweden, it is very recommended to use Bussgods. In the end Bussgods will handle most packages anyway and it is the most reliable service in the North. I would suggest a backup plan if parcels would somehow not arrive: I picked up my parcels at places I could buy alternative supplies if need be. Glad I didn't have to!
