Kung Fu (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
Ойындар
A playthrough of Nintendo's 1985 game for the NES, Kung Fu.
For the full review, compete with screenshot gallery and soundtrack, check out my write-up at www.nintendocomplete.com/kung-fu
Played through one loop each of the 1-player Type A and Type B game modes.
Kung Fu, Irem's classic 1984 arcade title, arrived for the NES launch (alongside Irem's 1983 coin-op 10 Yard Fight) courtesy of Nintendo, compete with black box plastered with pixel art. It's an extremely simplistic, incredibly addictive beat 'em up based on the old Jackie Chan flick (Meals on Wheels) that, despite looking significantly worse in the downgrade to the NES, retains every ounce of its playability in the conversion.
It was followed up by a couple of games - Vigilante (1988 - arcade, SMS, TG16) was a direct sequel, and the Japanese Famicom received its own exclusive sequel (1991- Spartan X 2). There was also a Game Boy exclusive entry in Irem's 1990 Kung Fu Master. There was a sequel developed before Vigilante, but it was shelved. A prototype of it has been found and dumped, but the dumps were never given to the MAME team for incorporation for whatever reason.
Kung Fu, Kung Fu Master, Spartan X - whatever you want to call it, is a great game, and though badly dated now, was a revolutionary step forward for its time.

@Katakuri you can't get any more nostalgic. If you told me that playing SMB on the wii or mariomaker wasn't nostalgic, I'd buy that. But to play it on its original system, on a CRT television... is as nostalgic as it gets my friend.

I'll always love this game not just as a fun game, but as a fascinating case study in tightly focused game design. Just two buttons and a d-pad, and yet you can do everything you'd expect to be able to, and all of it serves a purpose. Crouching and jumping give you alternate attacks in addition to serving as evades and riskier moves like punches and jump kicks give you more points and get you to the extra life faster. Each enemy is recognisable at a glance with a simple, easily-understandable behaviour that adds up to complex semi-random situations. There's nothing in the game you can really take away without it essentially falling apart. That's something I find fascinating.

I always loved the sound design in this game. Its great! When I first saw Super Mario Bros. I was blown away. The second game I played on NES was this. I saw what 8bit beat em up style looked like. My first experience of a 'beat the crap out of someone' game. Then I discovered Double Dragon at the arcade. Thank you Kung Fu🤘🌴

The NES version had the sound and music re-arranged by Koji Kondo. This explains why when Thomas was hit with a knife, it sounds like Link getting hit in Zelda II. The bosses laughing when they kill you are the same as Ganon laughing in Zelda II or Bald Bull or Soda Popinski laughing in Punch-Out!!

It does look easy now. But I was a beast at Nintendo games as a kid and I don’t remember beating this game yet now sure it looks super easy. Depends on age and people saying they beat it at 6 either are lying or just lying to themselves and was prob more like 10 or more.
I used to skip school, use my dinner money just to play it at my local arcade. I was the best at the time and will always pull a huge crowd just to watch me finish it. Thanks.
The little enemy kid jumping at 11:07 was always my favorite twist. It reminded me of the monkey jumping over another monkey in Stage 2 of Circus Charlie NES game. 😄

Wow, 1.9 million views!? I thought I was one of the only people that even new this game existed! I've never seen or heard anyone talk about it, let alone do a video on it. This was great to see! :) And I was about to comment on how none of the little green guys are jumping on you for some reason, cause I remember they'd often do that to me, especially when a knife is being thrown at my head, so I would get hit no matter what I did. But it finally happened 11:07. I'm just incredibly surprised it took so long. You even went through the first playthrough without it happening at all! I had a thought that it could be the kicking that makes them jump to avoid it and maybe I either forgot about that or never even realized that as a dumb kid but you kicked other times and they didn't jump, though it could just given them the possibility of jumping to make it less predictable. Or you just got really lucky. Anyway, thanks for the video.
I loved this game growing up even though I was never good at it
I used to love this game as a kid. It took a lot of practice to get this good at it, but I never did figure out that you could kill the dragons with upright kicks. I tried ducking and punching, which did nothing, so I assumed they were invincible.
