Kung Fu Hustle is a truly PERFECT film. Every scene is perfect. Every character is perfect. Every joke is perfect. And the Kung Fu styles are perfect for each character. And no matter how many times I watch Kung Fu Hustle, the relationship between the main character and the mute girl breaks my heart, and then the final scene puts all those pieces back together better than they were before. Kung Fu Hustle is an antidepressant for the soul.

Also the actress for the landlady is a proper screen legend. Her name's Yuen Qiu, she trained in fight choreography and opera under the same master as Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, and she literally only got a part in this movie by chance: she was accompanying a junior actress to the auditions, had no intent of auditioning herself, but the director recognised her and basically begged her to be in the film.

This movie is a great homage to Hong Kong Kung Fu cinema of the 70s and 80s. The three skilled fighers from the villiage, including the landlord/landlady couple, are kung fu movie veterans from that era. Stephen Chow himself, the director and main character, is a huge fan of martial arts and those movies. It's an awesome and unique combination of traditional martial arts, modern CGI and comedy. Such a philosophical movie! The guys don't have superpowers by the way, they just have different Kung Fu levels! These are the ideal martial arts, what the ancients had in mind to achieve! Also the philosophy of it, that is portrayed in Shaolin Kung Fu as well, is that the Kung Fu is inside of all of us and just needs to be unlocked! It's also smth the ancients believed, which I think to a certain degree it is true because you will need more than just training to unlock it, but it is there! Legendary movies....

Movie is a love letter to action flick, each "escalation" of the Kung Fu power is an homage to the evolution of kungfu action flick. From the gangland musical style from the 50s to the solid Beijing Opera fight style, to actual kungfu from the 3 master hiding in Pigsty alley, all the way to the Dragonball matrix fight at the end. Stephen Chow (who played the main character) write, direct and produce this and many of his film has this "ultra grunge " aesthetic as a knock on how movies make the heroes or any character to be flawlessly supermodel beautiful, he wanted to show there is beauty, power and virtue in the more of everyday people. The translation of Landlord and Landlady's name is kind of off base with Helen and Troy. Stephen name them after the most beautiful couple of a famous wuxia (martial chivalry) novel that had been made into film/tv multiple times. A western analogy is like naming them Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. It is as if saying that when they got older, they retire there and looks old and normal.

    - No kidding, this is for me one of the best tragi comedy films in history - The choreographer of this film was the same one who staged the scenes in the Matrix) - Stephen Chow himself shot this film and took the main role in it himself (and he is preparing a sequel) - Yuen Wa (Vermieter) also starred in Shang Chi and Danny Chen (whom you called similar to Bruce Lee) really created his image, but already in Shaolin soccer (also shot Stephen Chow, I highly advise if you haven't seen) and played Bruce Lee personally, but already in Ip Man 4 - Yuan Qiu (Hostess/Elena Troyanskaya) initially did not pretend to any role in the casting and came on a tip from a friend and she did not pass, but the filming team saw her face with a cigarette in her mouth and immediately chose her XDD - Bill Murray himself praised this picture

30:21, you're totally correct. It's a thing with Stephen Chow's movies. (You should check out his others movies too). You will never get bored, even after watching them hundred times. That's why Stephen Chow is beyond legend and is being idolized and worshiped by pretty much 1+ billion Chinese people in China and Oversea Chinese all around the world.

This is one of the movie reaction you can watch a hundred times and never get bored. Good job both of you. Not sure someone already commented about this or you already realized. The landlord and landlady kungfu compliment each other too. Landlord “Taichi” style is soft and passive type of kungfu, while the landlady lion roar is pure strength and hard type. Together they are good balance and like Yin and Yang.

This is a MASTERPIECE, every scene well thought out, every line, dialogue, expression, subtle details, story, character development, spacing, paying homage and references to other movies and western entertainment, music, sound effects, sound design, ALL put in with creativity. That's Stephen Chow.

Bro, I saw this when it came out and I forgot how great it is! Glad y'all liked it so much. Fun to see y'all experience it for the first time. So good!! Stephen Chow was supposed to be in a legit Bruce Lee biopic but they wanted to make too many changes so he bailed on the project. Too bad. Anyway, keep em coming bruv!

Stephen Chow, who plays the main character, the Buddhist palm guy, is the director and creator of this film. He’s a Hong Kong movie genius, and his brand of action comedy is a genre onto itself. Kung Fu Hustle is probably the most mainstream of his films, and broke into the international stage, but he has a whole host of amazing movies spanning decades. Some of the best titles are Shaolin Soccer, god of cookery and the Fight back to school trilogy. What’s amazing about Chow’s comedy is that there are a lot of culturally specific jokes, like how he incorporates spoofs of Hong Kong gang culture and violence, but it transcends the Hong Kong culture and can be universally appreciated. He’s by far more favorite Hong Kong movie maker, and he’s an awesome actor to boot.

As I'm sure others are recommending as well, check out the film Stephen Chow made before Kung Fu Hustle, a film called Shaolin Soccer. It combines kung fu with soccer/football - brilliant! (and hilarious!) And notice at the beginning of Kung Fu Hustle the first time we meet Stephen Chow's character he destroys a soccer ball and says, "No more soccer!" - that was a nod to "Shaolin Soccer" which had been a big hit in Hong Kong.
