Kundalini Yoga -- as Envisioned by the Ancient Yogis

Feature-length film explores kundalini yoga's origins in ancient India and documents the practice of a contemporary traditionally-trained Hindu monk who attempts to "follow in the footsteps" of the ancient yogis who recorded their mystical experiences of kundalini in scriptures known as Yoga Upanishads.
Written and produced by Swami Tadatmananda, a Sanskrit scholar, meditation practitioner, teacher of Advaita Vedanta, and founder of Arsha Bodha Center. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha.org/

Beliefs can be right or wrong, both in the sense of “helpful and harmful” and in the sense “factual (or actual) and false”. I don’t think we would need to explore this proposition for very long before you would start to back off of the position you’re advocating here, modifying it to suit the new information and such. It may be more accurate to say the certain types or categories of belief are neither right or wrong. Others areas of belief are made up of propositions that are demonstrably true or false. Just throwing that in so that all things are considered and we don’t end up with a living in cartoon version of reality. Language can lead one astray. Believe me, I hate to interject this stuff. It’s a thankless task, but necessary nonetheless.

I grew up in a very religious home but truly never understood or felt that those teachings and indoctrination’s aligned with who I truly am. Early in 2018 I had another which propelled me into spiritual research and a hunger for knowledge....it was mush later when I finally understood that that spontaneous energy surge traveling up my spine, it felt like an orgasm but hundreds times more intense traveling up my spine..This has completely changed me in every way, and has make me embark into a spiritual journey and hunger for spiritual knowledge.

He missed something about the reality of Chakras and Kundalini. He's right they do not exist in material, but saying it's placebo is overly simplistic. I know it's not real real but I feel the symbolic metaphor for them inside of me as real. I experience it as real metaphorically. I don't experience an actual serpent inside of me but what happened to me was symbolic of a serpent bite. First energy swirling around in my stomach then up to my brain and my brain opened up like a flower. Detached consciousness and an undescribable experience. My perception expanded beyond the material for a weeks or months. I felt and still feel the third eye alive buzzing with energy when I focus on it. I had headaches for weeks, nose bleeds, dizziness, real things that I don't usually experience all right after the awakening. It was like my skull was being squeezed sometimes. I feel energy running up and down my spine like a serpent every day. These symbols are real if you know what they mean. Chakras and Kundalini are no more false than any deity. He's actually very patronising the more I watch. He is a fake. Betraying the word for likes. Everybody loves to take a shot at new agers and saying chakras are false is a prescription that those anti new agers will enjoy. The man is a trickster.

The point I was trying to make is he has no experience of kundalini so he shouldn't be discussing it. This is a very dangerous subject to discuss because people who experience it in the west are in danger of believing that they are insane. If they go to a psychologist they will be deemed crazy and if they come online looking for info and hear what this man said it will not help the situation. Eastern ways are the only way for a Kundalini seeker. It doesn't not fit into western philosophy at all.

I don’t agree that without Yoga, spiritual awakening can’t happen. Lots of different paths to spiritual awakening. I’m Native American and though our tribes have different ceremonies, we still have spiritual awakening. In fact for traditionalists, this is the focus of life for thousands of years. I believe many cultures have a path to enlightenment. Truth is the same no matter which perception or language we wrap around it, therefore truth is in the event and not in our perception. Perception simply allows the potential for the pursuit of enlightenment. There is no promise of attainment for one culture compared to another. Any human being can successfully pursue, regardless of their background.

Dragonfly Moon - while I agree with your entire line of thought, the only suggestion I might add is that since you understand that one person’s awakening and another’s enlightenment are likely the exact same “experience;” it would seem just as reasonable to accept that one person’s yoga can just as easily be another person’s fasting or sweat.

Agree. The saying goes, 'the pathways to God are as numerous as there are beings'. There isn't just one way but all the ways tread the same terrain. We don't all get this knowledge passed down, so many will learn from different cultures where the knowledge is contained and more readily shared.

Agree with your thrust. Actually Yoga itself has wide variety of aporoaches. Yoga itself means union. Yes union with the ultimate. The methods are many. Kundalini Yoga is one of them. Hence anyone seeking enlightenment is actually practicing a form of yoga! It just happens that Indian subcontinent humans spent thousands of years putting it in a organised format.

Vinod Dawda It’s the meaning of the word “Yoga” I am missing. People think if it in a different context and use the word as a synonym with exercise. So it gets confusing and meaning gets lost in translation. On top of that, I use English different myself as a tribal person, making it even harder. Union I understand because I think that’s pretty much what happened to me. In that context, I would agree. This cannot happen without union, but the union is an even that happens to a person and before it happens a person doesn’t know how to recognize it. After it happens a person doesn’t have words to describe it, so I just assumed that’s the way it’s suppose to be.

You should go into how kundalini can be provoked some what “randomly” without practicing it for some people and how if the person doesn’t know what is going on they can easily end up in a place that’s not all blissful and in many western societies can easily be mistaken for psychosis, when most likely what is happening is the “snake” arose without clearing the pathway of the “chakras”. This is a huge reason why they say that these things can sometimes take prior knowledge and some practice in meditation. which ever way you achieve kundalini, let the knowledge of the universe inside of you lead the way and be the ultimate enlightenment for you and your future! 💜💙💚💛🧡❤️

I began my spiritual journey with Kriya Yoga which is a variation of kundalini heavily influenced by meditation on the 7 chakras 20 years ago. I still practice some forms of kriya breathing. But doe to my scientific background, it has always been so difficult for me to believe on chakras! So, I found Advaita Vedanta a better path to liberation. At last, I find a master who expelled all my questions about chakras some of them I had sensed before, such as that the fact that it does not matter if they exist or not, but as an instrument for practice. Now, I can continue my Kriya practice as a secondary cause as swami Tadadmananda explain. Thank you swamiji, you are a great teacher.

I think the way of kundalinin is majorly for superpowers etc etc....the best way for enlightenment is devotion....Live in the heart....I remeber hearing a saint say "If u wanna medidate...then do it like jesus"....For our cultures it would be Hanumanji....Both symbol of devotion and unbounded love...Kundalini sounds spooky...."Mooji" also called for avoiding this kundalini energy play.... My goal is just to be one with my creator....When i see him....i wanna see him with no place for any doubt...I want such clarity that i'd doubt my own existence for doubting his...The so called Superpowers of an enlightened being do interest me....but they don't seem effort worthy much...What's your opinion on this???

There’s an energy that resides inside you that rises up when your centres are balanced. Enlightenment happens down the road from the rising of this energy. My energy is rising indefinitely as well as my heart chakra felt like it expanded enormously. Eventually I energetically blew out into everything only by service of of my environment. I learned the secretes of life by paying attention to my experiences and these experiences allowed me to grow and understand. It’s a painful process as well as a blissful one. One can’t know bliss without knowing pain on the same level. I was born unbounded and became bounded to learn and then became unbounded once again. I practiced yoga, karate, Zen Buddhism but nothing completely. I just lived my life and tried my best to be a good person. My energy was always active and yours is too. The difference was motive. I didn’t want to be enlightened, I wanted to just care and love, the enlightenment is a byproduct.

This is a perspective of one who is quite in tune with rigid religious beliefs. I knew absolutely nothing about any of his training when I experienced Kundalini on a meditation retreat in SE Asia. This can happen to anyone. I experienced it first, then I learned what it was. No understanding of Buddhism or the Hindi faith is required. But do understand, if you have this experience, you will say goodbye to most of your friends, family, you will have a narrowing of what type of work you are willing to do and you will relate to nearly nobody you know. Its literally a gateway to a higher dimension, you will not belong in the world you currently know. If living alone, remotely and meditating like a Monk all day does not fit in with your lifestyle, you are not prepared, in this lifetime, to experience this. Its nothing to play with. The space between dimensions is terrifying and I believe its possible to get trapped there.

The whole human experience is always seeking experience even your Swami. If one seeks experience through Kundalini yoga who are we to hoard and protect something that is everyone's birthright. Thankyou for sharing your kundalini yoga experience. My own experience of kundalini was very mixed. I was delivered the physical world, by Christian nun mediwife. As a child l spent two years living in a vicarage. Later l moved from a peaceful village lifestyle to a turbulent town life. I attended a child midweek prayer sessions. At the age of nine, l prayed that god would enter my life. The room was filled with light, but no one else saw the light. I walked home, bathed in love, light, bliss, which slowly disappeared after 3 days. Later at 16 l was confirmed, l felt a prickling sensation at my forehead, a feeling of a bird fluttering above my head. Years later after nursing, night duty, in a busy hospital, l did Hatha yoga, for back ache. During sitting meditation l experienced a rush of kundalini up the spine, hit the forehead, then subsided. Many years of sitting in front of world teachers, Hindu, Bhiuddist, Jewish and pranayama yogis, l begun my life journey. After raising kundalini, life revealed that there is seven chackras in the head. The journey via these, takes one step by step, through each level of awareness. Four levels, these reveal unspoken lessons, as each person is unique. For westerners, my advice is have belief in the creator and the final game of life, is recognition of universal love, is everywhere, energy is reflected by everything in the material, phschic and mental planes. Simply ask life, to unfold the pearls of wisdom, to prepare one to receive and to use gained insight, to find inner peace. Being peaceful within oneself, then your very physical presence on the earth, can be a blessing to help others on their individual pathway. Respect swamis, truthful teachers, of all traditions...but life teases...also respect the Devine within oneself. Aum Shanti, may all beings be peaceful. Just choose to start your journey now. Aumay, life will show you the rest.

The explosion of white light was how I had my "kundalini awakening" after 2 hour meditating ...and the state was something that I can't describe properly giving I'm not trained well enough...it's like a sense of detachment, it took me a bit until I was able to move my body after I came up from it...now I keep on feeling this type of warm liquid up and down the spine, intense warmth, tingling sensations or pressure. Read the book of Gopi Krishna to understand all of this and I can relate to quite a few things, this is being quite heavy on the body. The 3rd eye opened as well, so it has been quite an experience...with all of this I stopped being an atheist...

Tadatmananda, interesting video. Let me just emphasize for all viewers that before you begin to work directly with awakening Kundalini, you first must dissolve energetic knots (so-called granthis) existing in your pranic body - otherwise Kundalini could get stuck at one of the knots and cause a Kundalini Syndrome, with symptoms resembling a psychosis. You can dissolve the knots by performing Maha Bandha, which is a yogic technique that in turn includes the three bandhas of: Mula Bandha, Uddiyana Bandha and Jalandhara Bandha. You should also perform Khechari Mudra together with Maha Bandha, because this mudra helps with dissolving the knots even quicker. If you would be interested in learning how these techniques are performed, I demonstrate all of them step-by-step in a video about Maha Bandha, which you can find in my channel. Do not hesitate to let me know if you should have any questions, I would be glad to assist you with dissolving the knots.

I've meditated for some time, and attempted a KZread meditation video about Kundalini Yoga and he went through all Chakra points and raised the serpent in 32 minutes. I believe I achieved Samadhi, and I feel as if the experience was similar to yours Swami Tadatmananda. When reaching the crown chakra the white light was there barely a second and almost made me open my eyes to see where the light was coming from, and the pressure of the blood in my body was intense throughout all chakras. My hands felt almost stiff from the rush of blood. I mention the experience because I was unsure if I reached Samadhi truly, so I compared my experience. I do believe I reached it once before a couple of years ago, but I worried that a 32 minute Kundalani rising might not be possible. I do not care about reaching Samadhi, but from the experience I feel I've learned about my true nature. I hope to continue down this path, thank you for your videos and the profound knowledge you have to share, it is appreciated by all. Anybody looking for additional study material, look up Samadhi on KZread for a documentary further into the Buddhist aspect. After further study, I found pranayama breathing techniques is key in this yoga.

Too, it has prompted me to ensure that my focus remain on the acquisition of spiritual knowledge rather than experiences. I found your use of the term "bait and switch" to be appropriate. I suppose there is some of that going on, even if unconsciously. However, speaking for myself, it is way of saying, "look over here, I have something wonderful to share with you that will assist you in getting to know who you really are--a divine, spiritual being whose nature is pure consciousness." I also appreciate that your perspective and opinion changed as you learned more and became more aware of the power of suggestion and the nature of the representation of the chakras. That to me shows that you did awaken even a little more as you created this film, as it's hard to change our criticisms in light of new experiences and information. I have never learned about kundalini before, and this was very informative. At first it really did seem like perhaps it was just another form of experience and pleasure seeking but when samadhi is the ultimate goal, I can now see it as a powerful and useful practice.

I am not a strong believer in all the mysticism associated with Chakra meditation and I am of the opinion that sleeping serpents are best left alone. But I am struggling to find the concentration for meditation and to keep up the routine. So I gave Chakra meditation a try just accepting that Chakras are energy points. I really feel very happy and calm when I focus on my heart Chakra. I have super tingling and pulsating sensations in my head when I focus on my crown chakra. It is helping me to stay focused, relaxed, empty my mind on everything else and I feel very peaceful. I don’t feel other Chakras at all may be because my belief is limited and my purpose is not to seek for that limitless energy but for peace and happiness.

I had never known about kundalini. I participated in a magnetic chakra healing (first time ever and not expecting anything necessarily) I heard a sound during the magnetic chakra healing. The sound repeated over and over. I heard kundalinileela over and over again. 😮 I googled what I thought was just a sound to discover these deep meanings. I’m so in awe.

Leela's are devine pastimes while on Earth in a human form. I experienced kundalini and for me it was way more intense than he described. Although he has been meditating for so long I'm sure his chakras were already open. I didn't approach it in this way, I would start off and it would rise to around the solar plexus chakra pretty quick and from there I'd picture kinda like 2 waves going in opposite direction but both towards the spine a I would picture the energy in a sort of ball between the 2 waves and with my breath I'd let it build up and once it starts to rise just keep it rising instead of just stopping at the next chakra. Also you should start taking neem and turmeric everyday, and this will help you produce Ojas. Ojas play an important role. You should look it up. Ever since I experienced that, I've found it easy to fall into a meditation and my mind becomes completely quiet, and if some thought or something occurs I just pay no attention to what it was and stay in the deep meditation. I love learning about yoga, and vedanta. 🙏 🙏 🙏

Thank You, Swami. Being One without any prior and formal spiritual teachings, I have experienced the blessing of Awakening, a state of new understanding, bliss and rupturing life energy within me three years ago with much confusion. I have been informally reading, listening and learning ever since and embarked on a beautiful spiritual journey. I was lost, but I am guided now. Thank you for your comprehensive teaching and for your kindness in the simplicity in summarizing the wisdom and the experience of Kundalini Yoga. In my experience, One, without any formal spiritual upbringing, needs only to follow the pointers of an enlightened teacher with clear intention, attention, and concentration, without striving and without being attached to an outcome nor be confused by the details of extensive ancient scriptures. Unless that is the intention. Due to an illness, I have started seeking spiritual guidance, practiced asanas and pranayamas and spent much time meditating, making sure I follow the most authentic teachings available to me. The experience of being One, Samadhi erased all the doubts and questions in my life. Ones again, Thank you, Swami, for your work and gentle kindness.

There was this intense pressure in the middle of my forehead and I just let it grow and then suddenly everything fades. The pressure was gone. All I feel is calmness. It felt like I don't have a body. It kinda feels like a light but I don't visualize it all I know is I felt it. Also, It felt like my head was was looking up... but when the feeling was gone... I opened my eyes, my head isn't looking up but just looking forward. It's really hard to explain but its true what you said, the experience is life changing. Hoping I can achieve it again.

Thanks, and fyi, from my experience there are a few practices that improved meditation efficiency : 1) Time: It's more effective @ around 3 to 5 AM. Maybe due to low noice at that time. 2) A good 10-15 minute stretching session and some body flexing workout before sitting helps a Lot. 3) Exercise (I used body weight workouts and morning runs) for atleast half an hour daily. That opens up the whole body, and it adds a feedback effect on overall goodness. Lastly, I never had a guru, and I kept improving based on what felt better. Also, it had no negative impact on me in any way. It was always a massively positive experience for me.

My Kundalini activation was spontaneous and before it happened I was not at all spiritual or practicing/believing in anything. I only went on a search for God for myself. I also set an intention to meet my true love and 2-3 months later I found both. God planned my spiritual awakening and being with my true love during a love making is what activated my Kundalini, it lasted almost 3 weeks. It was pure heavenly bliss and Oneness with all. I felt God within me, i felt love for everyone and everything even the ants before my feet, I felt appreciation for intelligence that allowed for all the creation I could see before me. From the roads to the tiny creatures, nature and to my own body.. everything is connected. There are countless ways to having a spiritual awakening, the kundalini I'm not so sure but this is how I had mine. To say it can only happen certain ways is to limit God in your own mind but God is completely limitless. Also if you literally haven't had one yourself then you could never understand. It's definitely only meant to happen to those who can handle it. You'll feel like you're going crazy, because you're losing your mind (ego) but something grounds you/holds you through the process.. you have an eternal faith and calmness that everything is going to be ok. You'll also feel strong heartbeat that feels like your heart wants to come out..and you'll feel energies flowing all throughout your body, you feel everything, it is truly beautiful and somewhat scary because it's never been experienced before. You will also move and speak slowly..like you're a slow moving sloth and this is because you're literally in bliss that you feel every movement and word and you're enjoying all of it. I couldn't move faster or talk faster if I wanted to.. it reminds me of Osho.. the way he moves and how slowly he talks, like he is in a constant state of bliss.

I love how you explain Kundalini Energy. I disagree with the generalisation that "westeners" only seex experiences when they do "drugs". To a certain degree it is true, but who is to say, that the rising of Kundalini energy, through Shamanic rituals, using Ayahuasca, Peyote or Mushrooms are not as valuble as your practice. Shamans have used sacred entheogens for thousands of years. Dancing is another way to connect with spirit. There are many ways, and we should not differentiate to what is right or wrong. I personally prefer the entheogens to help me meditate. To be honest, I would never have made the significant changes in my life at such a paste, would it not have been for the sacred plants. I admit, I also enjoy the experience but why should that be wrong? I still listen to what the universe has to teach me. Peace, Love and Namaste to all of you out there. We are one.

I never experienced the notion that I had to achieve the state of Samadi without the help of these consciousnes expanding drugs. They're not toxic and they help me to meditate for up to 4 hours. They have helped me get rid of toxic addictions and to truly accept and love myself. I firmly believe that we've used these plants, especially Mushrooms, way before we established different religions or spiritual practices. There is, in my opinion, nothing wrong with direct communication with the higher self, using these plants. They have also helped me on a physiological level, repairing my neurological network in my brain. 🙏

I prefer the word consciousness expanding drug. I believe we have to be careful to label everything which has an effect on our body as a drug. Psychadelics are non addictive, compared to alcohol or sugar. Or even the really toxic drugs, such as heroin. On the contrary, the psychadelics reveal to me what I had to change in my life to accept the knowledge that my body is sacred as it holds kundalini within. I never felt that I shouldn't be doing them, if it were the case, trust me, I would be told so while under the influence of the plants. They have also helped me on a physiological level, repairing my neurological structure in my brain. After two years I'm capable of doing Yoga to a degree which I never thought I would obtain. But It's just my personal experience. 🙏

@@michaelmike1515 Of course you will not be told not to do them because that would interfere with the law of free will within creation of all and you hold the pre-conceived belief already that they are not harmful to you. But other than that I do agree with everything you commented in response because it is very true my friend. I still go back to suggesting my original comment though, that you may consider to stop taking the psychedelics in general. I'm glad you have healed yourself but if you really listen to your true-self you will know that these are nothing but tools to help momentarily. I believe you are wise and strong enough to not have to rely on anything else besides your mind/body/spirit, even if you find these plants helpful. It is the ego that believes these plants to be of use.

In 2016 my Kundalini Spontaneously awakened in emptiness meditation. It was the most powerful and intense experience of my life. We're not talking like a little bit of prana moving from one chakra to the next. We are talking about energy that felt overwhelming like a freight train ripping up my spine and opening each chakra. I saw all past lives in the Ajna. I saw all the ways I was holding on in this lifetime. When It went to the crown I experienced a level of bliss and euphoria that I did not know was possible for a human being. I honestly thought I would die because the experience was so intense. Upon searching for the seer of this experience and all lives past, there was a dissolution of I and an experience of pervasive vast emptiness. Ever since this experience happened to me, I have felt kundalini energy surging 24/7. There have been a lot of difficult side effects with this too, like insomnia, pressures in the head and body, kriyas, emotional purging, occasional anxiety when energy is opening blocks etc but also positive experiences too like samadhi, overwhelming bliss, unity consciousness, feeling like being dissolved in love, etc. But it has continued dissolving any residual sense of self that survived initially. The more I surrender to the Kundalini and to the present moment, the more I am able to integrate this. When I do not do that, I end up in a lot of side effects and suffering.

The greatest challenge we face in life is to challenge our beliefs, and to go beyond our comfort zone. Remember that open minds embrace being wrong, are totally free of illusions, don't mind what people think of them, and question everything, even themselves. I have spent many years pulling at the threads, feeling what they are connected to. It is not warranted in my view to pursue something for validation from others solely as it feels selfish, but I worry I may be dangerously close to inflicting damage on my creativity out of fear of any validation whatsoever.

It scared me, so I called the only person I knew who might know what the heck just happened to me. She was my cousin, and she told me about Kundalini. I have since done research, and have heard from several people that the movements are indeed part of the "experience". I don't pretend to know what they mean, but I do know that I feel them every time I meditate now. I don't have to be meditating at all, in fact. I now feel them, out of nowhere.
