I have an older model and doesn't have any of the problems you talk about. My bed has never tipped not even an inch. I bought mine because it is a farm tool not a speed machine. My friend was killed in one of those side by side that goes 50 MPH, so no thank you. In my opinion, if you want to go that fast, take a truck. There isn't a side by side that has any where near the load capacity. I have had 1,000 pounds of fertilizer in the bed and it handled it great. As far as pulling capacity I have pulled out tractors and even a small fire engine that was stuck. Very happy with my Kubota.

Fantastic review. I really appreciate your down-home honesty and integrity. So many people review products with a light touch but you boil things down and even mention knobs that catch your shorts. As you say...Super Awesome! Your review has me leaning toward a Kubota. On the tilting bed, I'd check the cylinder for a leaky gasket. My farm bucket would sag slowly and I stopped the behavior with a cylinder rebuild.

They are great machines. Not fast but with the right tires they will go anywhere. Light bars on the front and back made huge difference in nighttime use. Great video. Thank you.

Thank you for the detailed review. We have the 2016 1140 which is the previous version of this. It has bench seats front and back and has been a perfect people and material carrier. It has a small winch at the front and we also pull small trailers behind it. In the winter (here in Canada) we also put a snow plow at the front to push snow around and it is fine for an average snow fall. We absolutely depend on this machine on the farm and we would keep it for as long as we can (650 hours thus far). As this is a on farm vehicle we are ok with it being slow :-)

Josh, totally agree. The 1140 is the most multi-purpose UTV for farming. When we bought ours it was one of only two UTVs that could expand seating for when you have visitors (or grandchildren) on farm. Thanks for the video.

  • @ExpeditionOverlanding

Love your channel and your videos, so please don't see this as criticism (more an owner experience comment). I bought the X1140 new in 2018 and knew going in exactly what I was getting. This thing uses a tractor engine (diesel) and limits the top speed to 25mph on purpose (in the US any diesel over 25mph needs DEF). The engine was designed for ag work and low idle conditions (livestock maintenance, etc), so it's not a speed demon by any means. With the default tractor-style wheels, I've had this thing stuck in marshy conditions on a few occasions and got unstuck in 4WD/low without any tire spin. I don't have the bed tilt issue, either, so that might be something wrong with your unit specifically. I DO agree that the latch system+the rhino liner stuff they put in the bed from the factory can make converting it to a 4 seater a bit of a pain in the butt, but that's something I've gotten used to. The gear engagement is a bit wonky at times, but all it takes is a slight press on the gas pedal when you're putting it in gear and it slips right in. The moral of the story here is make sure you understand your applications before buying any sort of UTV. The Kubota RTV is NOT designed for recreational use and is a workhorse. If you get one of these, make sure you get the CV joint protectors to avoid some of the issues SRF has seen with his.

Agreed! It is slow!! However like you said it will pull anything if you have traction. I also hate that studio mesh bed/cabin divider. Mine gets stuck and somehow creates blind spots(I know it's mesh but I swear it's hard to see thru). As a work vehicle though it is great. I've had 1600lb pallets in the bed before.

We were really considering the RTVX1140, but after watching several videos with the same complaint (speed), it really is pushing us to the Mule Pro-FXT. It'd be worth giving it a look... it has a similar bed system to get you to a 6 seater. Love that channel, been great seeing you grow it!

  • @wildbill23c

    @wildbill23c

    2 жыл бұрын

The RTVX1140 is built to work not race....I guess people don't understand the difference between utility and sport. Want to go fast buy a Polaris RZR, want to work buy the RTVX1140 or similar hydrostatically controlled machines. The actual John Deere Gator UTV only did about 25mph as well, plenty fast enough for work. If you are worried about speed on the road, keep in mind you should have a slow moving vehicle sign on it and remember tractors don't go that fast on the road either, some have road gear but still not something that you'll get from point A to point B in record time with. Honestly after having an ATV and a UTV. I'd never waste money on one again. One of those little mini trucks like the Subaru Sambar would make far more sense and far less money and you get a cab and heater at a minimum, some even have AC in them. They also make crew cab models, and dump beds can be put on them as well. To get something similar with a cab an heat/AC you are at almost $30k or more depending on the model you get, and very limited in selection and brands for those options.

Am sure Andrew Camarata would have no trouble with that option at all. Heck, I'm all thumbs, but would give it a try anyway just to learn something.

I looked at the Kubota but in the end went with the Kawasaki Mule with the diesel engine. I live in a high rainfall area with heavy clay soils and hills. Rarely you ever buy a bit of kit and outperfoms all your expectation but the Mule has absolutely done that. My biggest complaint is the lack of engine braking that the CVT system affords. It has a bigger bed than any other similar vehicle and with the addition of a winch it is unstoppable. I have had it 18 months and have just over 300 hours on it. I would buy another Mule in a heartbeat.

I hope Kubota is watching. I have had several including one like yours. I have found the newer ones, say 2015-2021, have made changes that make them slower. When you take your foot off accelerator, it's like you hit the brakes, it stops so fast. Hate that! I still own a Kubota 900 2 seater that I've had since 2008. This older one is much more peppy and doesn't have the previous problem mentioned on the newer ones. Still not a speed deamon. I put $5 lights on top rear of cab.

Don't think it's was made to compete with the recreational side by sides that people want to play in the woods with or race down the roads in. We are considering one of these in the future and think it fits the bill as a hard working reliable work horse for around the property. Maybe they will address some of the things you pointed out that affect usability before we get one. Thanks for sharing.

Nope. The engine braking is still a thing and, like almost everything else weird about this unit, was by design. There is a known hack you can do which allows the unit to coast, but I have found that the engine braking has saved my bacon a few times when driving over changing conditions where an immediate reduction in speed was required. Rather than slamming on the brakes, I just let off the gas and speed is reduced dynamically.

Josh, change out the tires and get field lugs. I go through tons of mud and never get stuck. My bed does not tip, stays where I put it. My friend has a Kawasaki Mule. Compared to this, the Mule will be on the scrap pile in five years. The Kubota is a heavy duty tractor with four seats and a dump bed.

I dont drive my truck that fast, start earlier. Just remember when driving slow you may not be going fast but you are ahead of the people honking at you, they should have started earlier.

Josh when would you use the differential lock instead of 4wd? I don't understand the point of the differential lock I guess.

Makes all 4 wheels spin vs just 2. In 4wd all wheels don’t spin only 1 front and one rear like a car

You should look at the Kawasaki 4010. It has the same features as yours but works much better.

Diff lock holder and shorts. Yes. I agree with you and I do think Kubota design engineers are culpable there. This is my #1 complaint. Turning radius. Double yes. It’s the Dodge Ram Mega Cab of side by sides. But if you have one you probably have a lot of acres so this is an opportunity in disguise. You get to see more of your property every time you need to turn around. The gear shift and 4WD specifically. Absolutely agree with you. I’ve figured out that gentle pressure on the shift lever with some throttle brings synchronizers into alignment for H, L and R. It takes a little finesse like the friction zone on a motorcycle. That’s not too bad. But toggling in and out of 4WD is more challenging. I have figured out the magic for that. Its easiest when moving at about 3-5 mph. Apply gentle but steady pressure on the 4wd shift lever while easing off throttle. As you reduce throttle, it reduces load on the gears and shifts and in out with ease. Accessory (aka cig lighter outlet) - Never really thought about it until you mentioned it but I could agree with you that placement could be better. I do think the socket connector is obsolete. It should probably be USB-A or combo USB-A and USB-C in 21st century. In fact, I actually removed the lighter socket and added a dual USB-a socket in the hole. I also added a power switch to it. For those not aware, that socket is constant power, regardless if vehicle is on. I have a hypothesis that your bed tilt issue could be a hydraulic leak with your cylinder; bad seal maybe. As another data point, I’ve had my 1140 for about same time as you with consistent miles and hours. I have no movement of my bed even with a lot of tongue weight present and I do not baby mine. You might have received a cylinder made late on a Friday or early on a Monday if you get my drift. Alignment of pins for bed to adjust from 4 seat to 2 seat config. Mine take a little wiggle to lock in as well but do not require the smacking of the panels like yours. I have a theory. All the stickers you added have tweaked the alignment. I’m not sure I can fault Kubota for tiny pebbles or other debris getting caught up in the pivot point of the bed section that folds up. That’s no different than stuff getting caught in a pickup truck tailgate. I think the onus is on the operator to make sure the pivot point is clear when articulating. Speed - slow and torquey. Yes, it is slower than others but I don’t see that as a negative as much as I do a design feature. As you mentioned, the sidekick and comparable models from other manufacturers are intended for the outdoor enthusiast. The 1140 is by design a utility vehicle and not a weekend camping side by side. How many of those others you are comparing are diesels? If you think about it, the 1140 max speed is consistent with most SCUT, CUT and UT tractors. Rear mirror mounted above your bed is interesting. Did dealer mount it there? Mine came in a box. Wasn’t sure where I was supposed to use it so I mounted as my rear view. Traction and wheel speed. Maybe I have different mud than you but I have mud and haven’t been stuck yet (knock on wood). Typically, for me excess wheel spin just digs in deeper. It’s slow power wheel turn that typically gets me loose. I need to rib you just a little bit. Around 5:45, you said you added a rug/mat to stop items from sliding around in the bed. Around 13:05 you acknowledge you have never used the tie down rings in the bed that were installed by Kubota to keep things from sliding around in the bed. [Insert SpongeBob stare kid meme] Interesting you had the tool tray under driver’s seat fail/collapse. I’ll have to check mine. I have not noticed that happen. Headlights are adequate but I’d like them to be brighter. I’m looking to upgrade mine to LED. OEM lights are 942 lumens. There are a lot of drop-in LED replacements that advertise in excess of 3500 lumens. My next upgrades to augment headlights are LED bars for front and rear plus side lights for 360 illumination. Think late hours cattle head counts of calf checks. I agree with you, there are trade-offs for this machine over some alternatives and it has room for improvement. But like you, I would buy it again. Thanks for good review.

I looked at a 1120D today at a dealership and the owner said it was. I mentioned the bed drift when the tailgate is open and he fired it up and pushed the handle down. Turned it off and said try now and it wouldn't budge. He said something to the effect that if you pressure down it will say down until the next time you raise it but you have to apply momentary pressure when it hits bottom. I didn't get to play with it myself and would love to test it to see if this is the case when really using it.

What good is having a 4 seater when the machine has no power? Try doing an experiment and put 3 adult passengers in it and see how fast you can go on different terrains.

this is a utility vehicle, used on a farm. if he wanted a fast side by side, there are plenty of options. I don't think the speed would vary much even fully loaded.
