Kubota BX 25 differential lock fail, making new HST FAN SHROUD.
The plastic HST differential fan gets a durable shield. It STILL works in 2024, built 2017.
Parts are ordered, new rear differential hub, spider gears and the differential lock and pins. In the meantime, the rig is quite dirty and gasket surfaces need to be cleaned, ready to assemble.
Update January 2024: 3062 hours and Fan is intact.
( Sept2017 ) : The fan works awesome. I haven't broke anything yet and when operating the backhoe, I can actually feel the warm air exiting the rear of the tractor. I believe the shroud has increased directional airflow over the HST housing.
Ducted fans are favored in VTOL aircraft such as the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, and other low-speed designs such as hovercraft for their higher thrust-to-weight ratio. In some cases, a shrouded rotor can be 94% more efficient than an open rotor.

If you get the chance, add grease everywhere, because the factory oiling is too light.
Was the groove in the shaft maybe for getting a socket on the shaft lock bolt.

I am not sure to what 'groove in the shaft' you refer to. On the HST input shaft, there is a groove around the splines, but I can't remember if it is a relief for the fan hub bolt. Probably. What I didn't understand, is why there was a half-moon cut out in the plastic fan, and if I would need to copy that in the aluminum shield. ??? But there didn't seem to be any reason on my BX25.

Maybe, if I had cut a half-moon in the shield, I might be able to reach that clamp bolt from the top of the floor pan? That is a good question. But on my tractor, the only way to install the propeller shaft, was to move the engine forward. I fought with that for hours, figuring there was a way without moving the engine, but nope. PS moving the engine isn't much of a job.

@@ya472 ok yeah that's what I was thinking about (the half moon cut out) making it easier to get a socket onto the shaft lo k bolt. But I see it looks like there was enough room... how did the machine come apart if you dont mind me asking... I'm doing one for a customer but haven't worked on his tractor before. Any tips for disassembly as far as what needs to come off first. (Same diff lock problem) as yours, except it crank the case... looks to me cast aluminum, any idea approx. How many hr job it is roughly? I'm a heavy duty mechanic

The fan shroud is nice. Do you prefer that over having a skid plate - or do you use both?

No skid plate. So far the fan shroud has worked perfectly. It seems to have increased the directional flow of air over the HST, as I can feel it blow out the back when the backhoe is off.

@@ya472 Sell your idea to Kubota or Botaproducts. Cheaper alternative to replacing unprotected fan or purchasing the underarmor skid plate.
