I think this is the touring bike for me. I’ve been riding a supermoto style bikes for the last 5 years and the SMT ticks all the boxes for me for a fun sporty touring bike. I’m just worried about KTM’s overall build quality. My 690 SMC R had a few issues, 2 of which left me stranded. Then I’m hearing all kinds of issues with the 890/790 parallel twin that makes me really apprehensive about buying another KTM. There’s no denying the performance and character of KTM bikes but there’s more to motorcycle ownership than just performance. I really wish KTM would sort these problems out. But people keep buying them so they don’t have a reason to implement better materials and improve build quality. But at the same time, the SMT kind of stands alone in the middleweight sport touring segment. So if I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted a more sport oriented touring bike, the only choice is the SMT.

I think you will love this bike! Yes, built quality could be better, I still carry on a few issues from when I got it more than a year ago, BUT the engine works perfectly fine on mine. Also 0 oil consumption.. so engine wise I wouldnt be that concerned, maybe they figured it out by now..

@@TANGORACING Thank you for your insight! I just bought a Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono this year, so the SMT purchase will have to wait until next year, as a new addition alongside my 698. I love the concept of the SMT and odd bikes like this. It’s a very niche motorcycle, but it is exactly what I am looking for in a middleweight sport touring bike. I’m sure there are quite a few others who feel the same way as I do about it. The only other bike I can think of that’s similar to the SMT is the long discontinued Ducati Hyperstrada.

Really great review with your feelings ! I have one for 2000km now. I love this bike so much fun and comfortable. Before I watch your video I didn’t notice the minor detail like the different mode “rain, sport…” or animations ( that should be nice if it was off when we’re riding the bike) and it’s really make sense! When we drive on bike distraction is our worst enemies. I hope your dealer gonna found the issue with your left indicator… Could you tell me what’s your feeling about the track mode, personally I love the screen much better for me. And how you feeling the MTC ? Personally at some moment It feel weird and little bit intrusive when I ride sporty. I put at 4. I really enjoyed your video. Good ride and have fun dude.

Hi, thx so much for your kind feeback, glad you find it helpfull! Hm, actually I tried to run track mode for some time as I thought I like the screen better too.. BUT, there are two reasons why I tend not to use it: 1. On my tours (and I bought my SMT for sporty touring) I regularly switch betweend ride modes and I also have to change grip heating settings (I ride around the Alps where there are huge temperature changes happening all the time..). Therefore I have those two configured on the quick select buttons up and down. When in track mode I can't access that any more as the up and down buttons work for TC-control... 2. I don't go that crazy, that I have to change TC-settings on my tour ridings... Since it's still a challenge to make the tires survive a decent tour of ~5000km you can't afford torturing them with TC out of every other corner anyway... So, I also can't give you good feedback regarding your last quesiton about the TC settings.. I just uploaded video footage of me "touring" and a 690 SMC following.. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mIqV3Ll-crPWddY.html

I looked at the SMT very hard and the cost. I considered my needs, expected trips, and riding style. I also considered OEM and aftermarket accessories available and total ownership experience and dealer network. I’ve decided to buy an 2024 MT09 SP and I’ll add a windscreen and appropriate luggage when I take it on trips.

Hi Brad. Cost and servicing was Also an important factor for me. After my previous post I’ve resigned from the SMT and bought a second hand 2023 duke 790 that after bringing to home I’ve discovered was accidented(sic!) I only did 4 km with it and sold with hudge loss. Then I came back to my first thought: I took a 2023 smt with only 306 km on the odo. It’s been 2 months now and ~3500 km behind me: it was a very good decision. The position is lovely, the steering capabilities are very nice and fits perfectly my needs. I easily do 500-700km trips much easier than on the duke 390. It also has grey shades like vibrations, wobbling front in some conditions… but in overall I love it and if I could I’d go for Alps I’d go even tomorrow! Still I miss the naked charasteristics (maybe 1 day I can afford two bikes) but for now I consider that it will be hard for a naked to get the same feeling like on the SMT. Cheers!

Hello, have you ridden SMT on the roads with poor quality, or no asphalt (gravel road) ? I currently own Duke 890R and im heavily thinking of buying either SMT, or ADV for more touring, but i dont plan to offroad. For example, i would like to comfortably reach peaks like Stuhleck, or Hochwechsel (if you ever been there), but i think i would suffer on Duke. These two on the other hand have more suspension travel, but i have tested SMT only on streets and highway, not rough surface. (890 Adv is obviously suficient offroad for me). Thing is, local dealer has great price for SMT and i dont know which route to go.

Hi, I have 10.000km on it now and I did almost everything (but racetrack) with the SMT. But I don't really see your point. If you know already that you won't do a significant amount of offroading, why is the Adventure even in the picture? SMT is the way to go for you then. I also have the 890R for track and hard fun riding and looked for y more comfortable touring option which is the SMT exactly. Same sporty tire dimensions as the 890R, but way more comfortable seating position and luggage options. Suspension has a wider range too, from very soft for comfort and/or offroad and sporty (not as hard as the 890R) but stiff enough for a sporty ride.. As long as you don't want to do plenty of hard off road enduro stuff I think the SMT is one of the best sport touring options out there.

  • @TANGORACING

    17 күн бұрын

I am not an expert in luggage. I just noticed the KTM hard cases are not for me as the bike becomes way to wide for me. Filtering not possible, sporty riding not possible (scraping of the cases..) - so it's not for me. Otherwise I haven't found a good solution too. I like the optics of the Husqvarna luggage system they offer for the Nordern 901, but mounting softbags on and off is also no fun. I personally now ride with the top case with a inner case (most of all because it stays clean and is much nicer in the hotel room than the whole dirty top case), and a large soft bag sitting between the top base and behind me. That's the perfect solution for me as long as I ride alone.. After long research I use rather cheap soft bags from bogotto and I am perfectly happy with those. But those are no side bags, so no help to you..

Thx. Sorry, I don't know that. He said they use the same paint which is also used for Lamborghinis, but I don't know a RAL number. And well, the white peak is going to be changed too. The carbon fender is ordered, but not available yet. If I don't like that look, I'll consider to paint it black paint too. Ah, and in case you didn't watch the video to that point - please mind that if you paint the real panels, you will see that the front panels aren't black, but grey plastic. You only start to see that once you paint the rear panels, so mind that! I had to paint the front panels too therefore..

@@user-bg8yx6gz3bah, good to know! The thing is that you have two different surfaces at the front body panel. There is the greyish black plastic material of the body itself (which can be seen ~1,5 cm around the edges) and then the glossy black color of the sticker holding the design elements.. The issue is when you paint the rear to match the glossy sticker of the front panel, the grey plastic edges suddenly stand out quite a bit.. - just to be aware of it..

Danke dir nochmals!

  • @TANGORACING

    @TANGORACING

    11 ай бұрын

The SMT is like a comfortable version of a 890R. In every day riding and practical use you basically don't feel the power difference, as the torque is the same. Handling is similar (I guess mostly due to the same 17" wheels) but suspension obviously is softer. But with the SMT to it's hardest setting and 890R to it's softest it's probably rather close. (I can't tell for sure as I have the WP APEX PRO on my 890R). I am used to a very hard suspension setting (890R with Apex Pro for race track), but I do get along with the SMT on Sport setting quite well. I did test ride the 1290 Superadventure and I prefer the 890 SMT over it as it's way more agile, and easier to ride. Same speed with less effort as long as we are talking twisty roads. If you don't ride a decent amount of off-road and like to have a sporty feeling, the SMT is the better fit over any adventure model due to the sporty 17" wheels - which makes a huge difference.

SMT KZread COMMENT Thanks for the great review. I have this bike and I absolutely love it. I am relatively new to riding. I've only been doing it for a year. My first bike was the 390 adventure and now I have this. From the first time I got on the SMT, it was like coming home. I felt like I had so much control and the bike is very compliant. It has given me a lot of confidence, but it also reminds me how powerful it is. I actually have the same luggage and windscreen as you, although I don't have the extra flap on my windscreen. I like how it works. I just hate how it looks so I've decided to live without it and I'm comfortable enough. I also love the seat. Might be just a tiniest bit too soft because I feel like after I've been riding for the day. It's too compressed and I'm not getting enough cushion from it anymore. But it's a great seat. The luggage I'm very mixed on. Basically, the thing I like about it the least, which you mentioned as well, is how hard it is to press the release button and then once you do, it's still kind of challenging to get the lid to open. But I think this is because it's so well sealed against water so I've decided it's a worthwhile trade-off. And it is a wide load! The first time I brought it into my garage. I knocked over several items with the bags, so unless I'm actually going on a trip, I ride with the top box only. I know the day will come when I wish it had more top end power, but it hasn't been an issue for me yet. I have yet to max this bike out, or even close. The other thing I agree with you on is the ride mode switching. It is totally not intuitive and it's so annoying. I've probably changed ride modes 10 times since I got the bike and every time I go up thinking I'm gonna hit sport and instead I get rain so I have to hit up again and then it circles back around to sport, but that's a dumb design. I think the way they have it set up, it's like you're spinning a wheel instead of moving up and moving down so if you think of it that way, when you spin the wheel up, it brings in the gentler ride mode and when you spin the wheel down, it brings up the more Intense ride mode. It's kind of like the new computer screens where the arrows used to function one way, and now they function the opposite way. Anyway, thanks for doing this and enjoy the bike! I’m hoping to travel around Europe on this bike in a few years, assuming I still have it. I’ll look for some of your road recs when I get a chance!

Thx for sharing your feeldings and experiences with this bike! I completely agree with your findings and it's fun to see we basically come to the same conclusions.. I use the top case and a big soft bag between myself and the top case (as long as I go without a partner) and that works so much better for me. It's such a fund and nimble bike, especially when going through cities and filtering cars, I can't and don't want to be looking out for those stupid wide boxes on the side. It's only worth if you HAVE TO use them for 2 persons I guess.. I painted the silver aluminium parts of the top case in glossy black and that looks SO MUCH better too!! I also got used to use the rally bench for now. I prefer it to the regular one for short, off-road and inner-city trips. But I haven't done a really long tour yet - I'll see about that this summer.. Otherwise I am still bothered with some electic issues.. Left control switch is and/or internal electronics is still acting up, all locks had to be changed due to some error which occured at the dealer during service, rear brake discs had to be replaced, the windshield in combination with the additional flap does not seem to be suitable for ANY off-roading. mine broke wihtin 10 minutes on some off-road part..Also the original battery died over the winter and had to be replaced.. It's a fantastic bike as long as it's running.. like most KTMs.. : )
