KTM 790 Adventure Touring Setup and why I'm riding to Stalag VIIIB
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
It's been delayed for two years, and I've knocked it back and back, this year, But I finally decided to say "sod it" let's just book it up and ride my KTM 790 Adventure across Europe! I've wanted to visit the site where my father was a POW (Stalag VIII B - Lamsdorf) ever since I discovered some of it is still standing. It's now the Polish Prisoner of War Museum, and it's somewhere I just have to travel to.
It's a bit of a slog across to Lambinowice, but it made sense to create a loop and do some exploring whilst I'm at it.
In this video, I go through the setup of my bike for the trip and talk a little about why I'm doing it. The travel videos will follow shortly...

Looking forward to the videos of your trip, destinations, and hearing more about your father. My dad never talked much about his service in WWII. I do know he was in a US Army “tank destroyer” battalion and somehow ended up back in the US at an Infantry replacement training center for the US Army. Tough men that survived tough times.

Indeed, my father never talked about it either, it was only on his last year as dementia got worse that he started blurting things out. It’s been quite a challenge piecing his story together.
Looking forward to this one. Good luck. 👍
Looking forward to your trip Tony! All the very best for your journey!
All sounds interesting, looking forward to seeing this as it comes along.
Fabulous Tony, looking forward to it all.

Nice setup. I’m looking forward to the videos.
Looking forward to your trip and the forthcoming videos. As you would say, stay safe.
All the best Man Cave. I’m excited for you and as my Father was in WW2, I can identify with this trip. Farewell. Cheers from NZ.
Have a good trip, Tony. Looking forward to future updates.

Good luck Tony, really enjoying your content great channel, will be good to see you uploads from this trip, I'm torn between getting a 790 second hand , 890 new or a 2019 VFR800 for the sort of biking you are doing on this trip so it will be interesting to see how the 790 goes. Great content, good luck with the trip.
What a great trip. Reckon it will be quite emotional.

My dad was in airborne too, his glider went down in the sea just off Arnheim during market garden and he was recovered and brought back home, lived a long and happy life thereafter

Will look forward to seeing it. Sounds very interesting. Even just silent riding is fine, don’t feel you have to edit it out, it can be quite relaxing for the viewer.
I’m so pleased to hear that your father survived that ordeal. The great march was one of the most cruel and painful ordeals POW’s were ever forced to endure. Most we’re suffering from countless afflictions as a result of malnutrition, those who couldn’t keep up were just left by the roadside or shot. We owe so much much to that generation. Hope all goes well on the trip.
Safe trip Tony, wish i was going on another trip! Plenty booked for next year. 👍

Cheers Bud, you've had some good ones though! I intend to do more next year too,
I went to the same camp a couple of years ago as my grandad was there for three years and also survived the long march. It was out of season so I had the museum to myself and the young lady working there was very helpful. Do make sure to go further up the main road from the entrance where the museum is, and you'll find Chestnut Alley which was the entrance to the English quarters. You can ride the bike on the cobbled road and you'll see some overgrown buildings amongst the trees. Your dad will certainly have trodden the same cobbles.

Thanks for the info, yes I definitely want to see more than just the museum.
Looking forward to following your trip Tony, a nice adventure, but with a very poignant background to the journey. Cheers, Steve

Hello Tony - I'm looking forward to your forthcoming video as my father was also a prisoner in Stalag VIIIB. He went to France in 1940 as part of the BEF and his unit some distance inland fighting the Germans when the Dunkirk evacuation took place so he was a prisoner for close to 5 years. I also enjoy your reviews and I'm thinking of getting the Lomo panniers except it looks a bit of a faff to attach and remove them, but then there's the price ....Cheers Mike in Powys.
Safe trip dude

Always fancied seeing my father's camp - Stalag 7A, he was captured at Anzio in Feb 1944. Been near several times on European tours, time I went.

@@mancavemoto The largest in Germany I think. He was originally in an Italian camp, escaped at the time if the Italian capitulation and was taken to 7A after recapture.
First of all I look forward to the trip. That's quite an Agenda you have got ahead of you, wish you all the best. Be aware that filtering isn't allowed in Germany, a new law lays it on the motorway out as illegal use of a rescue lane - fine is I think a couple hundred €€€. I am also interested in your visit to SW-Motech, I like their stuff. I am ex Forces, got left behind here in Germany, I think the Stalag will be an interesting destination. Have fun and ride safe.

Yes, please do the review of the air pump!
@mancavemoto
Жыл бұрын
First thing i've learned (the hard way) is that if your bike has a CANBUS and you plug the pump into a 12v cigarette style socket, it will blow the fuse within a couple of minutes! So now i've put a replacement fuse in the bike and fitted an Sae cable to the battery.

@@mancavemoto thanks, i’ve watched it. This would be a great help. It feels awful with my stock screen.
Hi Tony - Sorry a bit late to this but found this trip series moving & informative. Random left field question- noting the Kriega rack OS rack loops on your 790. Have you fitted an aftermarket rack? If so - which one? Looks tidy…cheers 👍🏻
@mancavemoto

Cheers, glad you found it. It’s the KTM accessory rack
Great looking bags, where did you get the lockable straps from. I have the same issue with my Givi soft panniers, lockable to the frame but easy to open as not lockable..
@mancavemoto
Жыл бұрын
I ordered them from the Kriega website.
Thanks for the video. I like to ride fast, around 170/180km. Will these bags hold at those speeds? Did the manual say anything?
@mancavemoto
Жыл бұрын
The bags do have a disclaimer in the instructions of a max 130km/h speed. I have exceeded that on the autobahn, with no ill effect
Much respect and honor to your father who did his share in defeating Hitler's Nazi Germany, God bless him and those who served. My question for you relates to what navigation program you used, I know you used a Garmin XT, but did you use BaseCamp or another program. Thanks, Bill (South Carolina, USA)
@mancavemoto
3 ай бұрын
Thanks Bill, I mainly used the TomTom MyDrive web based route planner and exported a gpx file into the Garmin. I also used some parts determined by the Garmin XT itself. I now tend to use MyRoute-app quite a bit.
Hi Tony, I know that this is an 'old' video with your old bike.Quick question, the MRA spoiler on your screen is it the sport or tour version? Only asking as I have the 790 Adventure and I've fitted the sport screen after seeing your review (it's excellent) but like you I'm still getting a slight vibe on my crash helmet peak and I think the spoiler will solve that.I see that MRA have three versions of this spoiler hence my question. Cheers :)
@mancavemoto
11 ай бұрын
Its a VSA Typ C spoiler. I still own the KTM although it is up for sale, I did also try the MRA Touring screen and that solved the buffeting issue completely for me. I have it tucked away in the box in my garage.

I'm a little late to the party... However I'm curious as to if the SW Motech City tank bag reduces the steering range as it's not listed on SW Motech's website for the 790? If so how much does it effect steering? Cheers
@mancavemoto

No problem, it can touch at the extremes of the bar turn, but only the side pockets. The good thing is that you’ve got the adjustment in the base to counter it

For the extra effort - the difference is weight saving. For a "safe" trip enviro, it makes sense.

Had solid boxes on my GSA, never again as they are too heavy, you lose a bit of security but they weigh so much less.
Don't know why you have a tyre plug kit when your wheels aren't tubeless on the KTM. You could be packing less as you'll not be needing the compressor also.

But the wheels are tubeless. They are tubeless as standard. Why else would I pack a plug kit and compressor?

@@mancavemoto my apologies 🙏🏻... I assumed with the central spoke design they weren't, must be a sealing strip inside or similar method of not letting air out.
