This has been my dream bike for several years and I finally got to ride it last month. It was literally unbelievable. I couldn't believe that a bike like it could even exist. Compared to my WR426 sumo it was a rocket.

I know quite a few Yanks who change oil every 1200 to 1500 miles and have more than 12,000 miles without a piston change. Valves hardly ever actually need adjustment so a much m,ore practical bike than you might think.Buying one myself very soon to replace a 690 ER. Same power but at least 80 pounds lighter, what is not to love about that?

I have 67 hours on mine and I've done 1 service never checked the valves. I'm doing it different on this one as my other bikes I've done the services on time and under. I want to see if it gets to 200 hours with very basic 3 services and strip the engine to see how that's impacted on the engine compared to the my well serviced bikes.

You covered the important information - the service interval is way too short for this bike to be used for me as a dual sport. That's an oil change and valve adjustment every other day. No thanks. Good review.

Lay the bike to left on the ground letting the fuel move down to the bottom left hand side of tank and stand it up and ride off. Fuel tank is designed lower on the left then right to give you that little bit more fuel for moments like this.

My 2019 KTM 500 EXC F sounds a lot more aggressive, loud and snappy then this when you give it more throttle. But on that all restrictions in the air intake and exhaust have been removed and that made a huge difference (ECU was already programmed for that). The 500 is a beast and it feels a lot more powerful then my old Yamaha WR450 while power comes on more controllable and it feels more light and have better breaks. It is scary powerful and I love it :)

but a service is a bottle of oil and 20 mins of your time - it is nothing and in fairness the intervals rated are for hardcore riding - you can easily double them with ZERO worry, my sxf 450 as an example gets a service every 10 rides and that might be 35-45 hours, it is 100% and i have had it since 2013... 🙂

The way that he is riding this bike there is no need for such short intervals for maintenance. Change the oil before it starts to look black and ride the shit out a it my wr250f has 50 hour intervals for valve checks it now has 13000 kms on it and only one valve adjustment since brand new as long as it starts and idles fine then valves are prly still good

You should try the husky 450 or ktm 450 6 days. They have the same power but weigh even less! You also get the map switch, which can turn the traction control on/off. Side note - I ran my 450 out of fuel just after attending a bike meet and leaving spiritedly. The fuel light means you basically have no fuel left lol!

62HP !! ... :) The Yamaha WR450 I used to have had 42hp and bottom end torque that was scary at times when going offroad and it did power wheelies in 1, 2 and 3rd gear with supermotard road tires on. Think when I get a new dirtbike I will get the KTM 500, it has same weight as the 50CCM moped I had when I was 16 lol.

pretty sure he was fumbling with the numbers when he said that. AFAIK the 500 excs usually have about 45-48 hp or so, which seem to be closer to just above 50 hp when you fix the mapping and airflow on it from what ive read. the only lightweight SM bike i know of that pulls 60+ hp numbers is the Aprilia SXV 550 (which ppl claim actually pulls 70(!) hp, in addition to weighing less than the exc?)

Service on the 2019 is 150 hours for valve inspection not 15 when not racing (if I remember correctly, but it is for sure not that often)... Service intervals on the KTM 500 at leas on the 2019 is not that close according to what it say in manual, mostly only oil changes that is done often :) If you are not riding hard at high revs valves usually do not need adjusting for a long time.

It is scary powerful and I love it :) Bought the 2019 KTM 500 after test driving the 2 stroke 2017 KTM 300. The 300 was very nice with no vibrations but it had very little power compared to my old Yamaha WR450 and I could not make the 300 do any power wheelies... It has become apparent I am a torque power junky so I did go for the 500 even if it is pretty much way to much power for me :)

Debating on getting the 500 exc-f or 350 exc-f but I’m concerned I’m going to be making a bad choice. I want to go on the road regularly so the 500 might be better but on the dirt I feel like it would be too much, the 350 would be better on dirt for me, but I don’t know if it’s going to be enough to ride on the street.

I agree. I had a 690 Enduro and 500 EXC. The Enduro is pretty damned capable, but it's no 500. If the 500 falls upside down in a ditch, just pick it up and keep going. The 690's extra ~70lb and lack of a handhold is a problem.

Thanks LCR! I put in a BYOB order for a 2018 beta 300rr 2 stroke with plans on using it as a supermoto and dirt bike. Some people say the vibes are bad on the 300rr on street but I figure Flexx bars can help with that. However, I'm also throwing around the idea of getting a 18' 500 EXC but the 15 hr valve adjustments turn me off but most people say it's fairly easy and the valves are usually always in spec. What I like about the 300rr 2 stroke is it's simple maintenance, oil injection (no mixing oil and fuel), just an easy top end every 150 hrs, that 2 stroke hit of power, unique sound and super lightweight bike. What do you think? The 2 stroke will not be used for the highway but local roads and backroads. Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it.

I borrowed the ktm 250 tpi, I have a review on the channel. It's an incredible bike and so light. Even though curb weight isn't that different between the 500 exc and 250 tpi the two stroke feels so much lighter as engine rotating mass is so much less so changes direction quicker. But your right so many people told me forget the 15 hour vavle check on the 500 it's allways in spec just change the oil and check valves every 6 months. I think the job is pretty quick too.. it's seriously tough call between the tpi and 500 fours, two strokes do sound lovely though and probably thier days are numbered as they will never be able to meet emissions law in a few years so buy one while you can I recon 😎😎

Curious what you think compared to your 701, obviously the 500 is the better off-road bike, but if you had Sumo tires how would you describe the two? I almost bought a 17 501/500 before deciding the 701 was a better fit for my personal riding style(long rides, dual sporting, commuting.)

+MotardSteve yeah it's tough... by the time you get a smaller rear sprocket I don't think speed wise will be much in it... 500 is lighter of course but it's not as powerful as the 701, I think as a road sumo 701 makes more sense 👍

  • @LambChopRides

    @LambChopRides

+dr. Doeslittle yeah that's an interesting one as if you consider the 500 is geared much lower than the 701.. my old 701 with the power commander felt almost as quick as was geared for 115 mph! The 500 would probably do 90... but it's how light and nimble the 500 feels compared to the 701 which feels like a super sport bike in comparison. But yes out and out performance and power feel maybe not a huge amount in it..
