Thanks for another well done video, I’ve often looked at that big chunk of metal exhaust piece there and just makes sense to get rid of it. I was very interested to see that you made a video on the removal and why. I appreciate your thoughts of leaving it or removing it and reasons, also the information and conversation that you had with the manufacturer replacement piece regarding the shock heating up. Video well done and I’ll be waiting for your next one.

EPM is great. I got a front Andreani cartidge and rear Hyperpro shock from them last fall. I went to my local shop for install and the suspension guy set the sag. It's been a game changer. I got in three rides before winter hit. On road there was a marked improvement all around. Turning and braking are both improved dramatically as expected, but the real surprise is how the bike accelerates. It isn't faster of course, but there isn't that subtle dive/lift I used to experience during hard acceleration when changing up a gear. Off road it is literally night and day. Trails that I struggled with became enjoyable and sections that I normally couldn't get through were passable. This is the first motorcycle that I bit the bullet and paid for a suspension upgrade and it is worth every penny. I agree with you about the weight and heat loss and flow/sound gain. Let's be honest though... it looks better too.

I did this on my bike too, the loudness improvement it's huge on a aftermarket exhaust! I was mounting Arrow pro race with a modded db killer, I had to put back the original dB killer because it was way too loud! Now it's perfect! I did it for the heat on rear shock too. But damn I feel the bike so better now. It's definitely a must mod in my opinion! 😎😎

I did this mod and have the best dual sport end cap and it sounds and works amazing.

This was the highlight of my holidays lol. Been eagerly waiting for this video. Thanks for the information, so far my shock has been good but this is food for thought. Congrats at the 20k miles!

I would agree the extra heat can not be good for the shock. Not only the heat generated by the resonator, but it seems to be a big block for incoming air to the shock.

Well done. Nice video about how to correct a problem with simple factory components.

Thats a good mod, even just getting the heat out is worth it. I think it has an effect on the shock. the 790s have the same issue. Im pretty sure its a cat on the 790 though and it needs a tune for more fuel if removed on the 790. KTM labels it as a pre-muffler on the 790. Lol The 790 is pre Euro 5 though. Sounds good and doesn't seem too loud. Nice video Matt!

how's did it run/sound after removing the resonator and changing the muffler?

Hey Matt. I recently took the resonator out and added a mid pipe and an eBay slip on muffler. Definately louder!! So much so I'm going to put the OEM muffler back on to compare, but after listening to yours it sounds acceptable. Dont get me wrong love to hear a thumper, but if i'm travelling for a few hours I dont think I'd want that Dakar racing bike sound in my ears all day. Hahaha

Totally understandable. I don't really notice the exhaust note over the wind buffetting. My helmet is maddeningly loud at highway speeds. Offroad it makes me giggle every hard twist of the throttle. Removing the resonator is the real need IMO.

@@advmatt Wind noise isnt too bad with mine as I added a Givi Airflow, but with the help of spacers I angled the screen forward like a rally bike. Huge improvement! If I end up keeping this bike for long term I'll upgrade the exahust system to perhaps a Dominator system or Delkavic if they can supply one.

Last summer I replaced the endcap on my stock exhaust with one from Best Dualsport Bikes pretty much just to improve the sound. They say it gives you a couple more horses, but I can't tell from the butt dyno. I love the new sound though. Your mod which removes over five pounds of weight seems very worthwhile. Wonder how the sound would change with my more open endcap? I would love to hear a report after a few hundred miles to see if you've run into any downsides to the mod (ie. performance changes). Thanks for the video.

I will let you know how it goes. I think a new end cap or replacement exhaust might make this bike really loud. Might wait for those extra mods.

Shocks ( hydraulic dampners ) self generate heat in NORMAL operation and do not need any additional heat sources from a resonator. As the resonator having a large surface area actually does dissipate heat from the exhaust GASES the density of the exhaust gasses increases and reduces gas flow through the muffler. The weight savings are nice too. When in doubt " throw the resonator out ".......a little ceramic exhaust wrap helps thermal efficiency and weighs near nothing..

I did the resonator change, and I'm very happy with the sound and performance. I had a question about your experience with vibration - I noticed the image in my stock mirrors have the quivers pretty noticeably. I'm not sure if I just didn't really notice it before, or if this is something new with the resonator delete. Another possibility is an incident a couple of weeks ago where I went down pretty hard and bent the crash bar. Or it could be that it was always quivery and I'm just picking up on it now. I don't really feel a vibration difference - its always been buzzy on my hands, and still is. Did you notice any change like this when you took your resonator out? Do you recall if your double take mirrors improved image stability over the stock mirrors? Thanks.

My double take mirrors vibrate more than than the stock mirrors. I only had the stock mirrors for a few hundred miles so I dont have a great comparison. My experience is the resonator delete made the engine smoother in the upper RPM range but more viby below 5k rpm. Not a huge difference, but noticeable. The resonator smoothed things out. It is really hard to tell without riding the same bike back to back with and without the resonator.

Great question. It might void certain aspects of the warranty. Anything on the bike affected by this mod, like the engine might not be covered.

Yeah, I was able to get everything to full fit together with no gaps. I had to leave the header pipe loose to get it to fully fit, then I clamped it down before tightening the header. It took some work, but I was able to get it.

I added the Coober ECU/Airbox/Header pipe kit to my 390. It seemed natural to try a bypass pipe and removing the resonator, so I did that as well. Unfortunately, I found the bike ran poorly under 4.5K and lost some of the gains I got from the Coober kit. After asking around (email exchange with Coober) I was told the resonator adds a bit of needed back pressure and removing it would indeed cause the low/mid range to take a bit of a hit. I did a couple trips with the resonator off but in the end decided to put it back. Was a bit of a bummer as I really dug that audible attitude the bike had w/o it.

I saw a video about the cat free header pipe and how the resonator had to stay for back pressure. I think it's unfortunate that kit requires the resonator. It discouraged me from doing the Coober kit. Thanks for the comments with your experience. It's good to know about these different setups from riders using them.

@@glaurini Not that I could tell as it seems most of the actual silencing happens in the resonator itself - adding the head pipe didn’t change much as compared to adding the slip-on.

I have not found any power loss issues. If anything, the throttle response is better. I havent had any issues running lean that I have experienced. No heat build up. The header pipe with the catalytic converters provide a lot of the back pressure.

Hi Matt, how is this holding up now? Any signs of damaging the engine etc? I have an aftermarket exhaust with baffle still installed, I've also removed the plastic cover under the seat to give better air intake, just wondered if I did this too (mainly for weight saving) would I be running leaner than the ecu could compensate

So far no issues running without the resonator. A majority of the back pressure comes from the header pipe. Removing the resonator and using an aftermarket exhaust might make the bike really loud. I only have 600 miles on this setup so far but it seems fine. From what I have seen replacing the header pipe is what really necessitates a new fuel map, but then you have to keep the resonator for back pressure.

Hi Matt, I just got a duke 390 2021 and am confident it also has two cats like yours. The older models had one. You mentioned that you don't think a remapping is necessary with just the presilencer (black box) removed. Did you see any errors come up after taking it off? What are your thoughts on me removing the presilencer and adding the optional Akrapovic exhaust? Do you think I still wouldn't need a remap or piggyback ICU? There's a KZreadr called kickstand up that did the same as you with Akra exhaust and sounds pretty good. Thanks for sharing👍

As long as you keep the catalytic converters, meaning header pipe, I expect you will be fine. The bike might be pretty loud with the Akro and resonator gone, but it might be a good loud. I have not had a single error code come up. I have also thought about replacing the muffler/silencer but havent yet. It's a future project.

Excellent video mate, from the UK. I have recent bought a cheap £90 slipon exhaust so will be interesting to see how that performs. The reason I changed out the exhaust was not the sound, although this sounds amazing, it was the surging I got on the overrun when blipping down the throttle coming up on a junction. The effect of this made the bike jerky. I hope this helps it as I think it's excessive back pressure not allowing the bike to breath properly. Another option is an open airbox mod. I'm wary of making the resonator mod as the bike is brand new and it will invalidate the warranty. Tell me, has your resonator mod resolved that surging issue.

I have not experienced the surging issue you are describing. I prefer the way the bike accelerates now and how it sounds. There have been no engine error codes. Its running great. Cheers.

@@advmatt cheers Matt. Maybe it’s perhaps I have a new bike. I even thought it maybe the quickshifter or perhaps the heated grips but I’ve tested this and there is no problem there at all. I haven’t been out on the bike since I fitted the exhaust so when I do I’ll report back. One thing I have noticed it the engine recovery from reviving it stationary seems to be quicker now at least. If this doesn’t resolve it I’ll go down your route and remove the resonator like you as I think the excessive baffleing maybe partially causing the slow response. One of the great things about your video is showing how relatively straight forward the job is. Thanks Matt, your videos are packed with great tips.

@@advmatt So an update. I have now resolved the surging issue. It was the quickshifter. I asked KTM to take a look and they reprogrammed the system and now it's smooth as glass. Tell me, did you have to remap the bike or anything when you completed the resonator removal?

Im trying to see when I have to reprogram the ECU? I want to purchase an entire Dominator exhaust but I can’t seem to find definitive direction for my best route. I don’t want to damage anything. The bike is brand new. As a side note, your videos are the best on the You Tube!

Thanks for the feedback. If you replace the entire exhaust you need a fuel controller to modify the air fuel ratio. From my research if you remove the header pipe that contains the catalytic convertors you have to keep the resonator to maintain proper back pressure. Check out the site Best Dual Sports. They have a fuel controller and more information on the exhaust replacement.

I think that any reduction in the weight of the bike is good.. I also think that the only way to increase power is to change the complete exhaust pipe together with the pipe.

I agree, for better engine performance it has to be the entire exhaust, but I have seen the new header that removes the catalytic converters still requires the resonator for proper back pressure. My primary purpose for the removal of the resonator was to remove heat from the shock.

No remap needed as long as you keep the stock header pipe. I have no idea how many decibels are coming out. I might try using a phone app to measure it. I will let you know.

Ive done it wth an ali express one, that i had to remove the cat from the headpipe, but after that is sweet, much better than wat you show that has a strange turn. Great sound for the price, no engine light on. Then i installed a Slipon Leovince, but was too loud (nice sound but loud) so I installed the resonator back on. hope i can find something in between.

@@KrazyKanucker yes. Much lower frequency. Nice bass sound but too loud. Like a mx bike. Is good if you only use it on excursion but not for everyday commute (at least for me)

With the shift-tech delete did you have to cut down the header and remove the second cat? I installed the Verex and that needed the second cat cut/deleted just to fit. It looks like the one you installed had enough space to not require that.

@@advmatt got the verex on and running, no tune required but it is louder than I expected. The pre-muffler is a resonator for sure. I think things will mellow as things settle in and I get tuned to it. Again, hope you are on the mend.

Well, three months later and I expect you have put a few miles on this resonator removal... anything to add to your video? \No performance issues arising? I'm thinking of doing this for purely cosmetic purposes - I had hoped this bike would have some of the throaty "thumper" sound I used to hear out of 4 stroke motocross racers, but it is actually pretty anemic. I've seen video's on a variety of muffler changes from cheap to expensive, but most really make only a minor change in the sound. I'm thinking this mod, at a pretty reasonable price, is likely to have as much or more effect. Thoughts? (BTW, I've noticed you haven't done any light mods - is that because you don't do much night riding?)

I have around 2k miles without the resonator. No issues have come up and I think the throttle response is better. It definitely has a more thumpy sound than before. It sounds much better. I doubt I will replace the muffler. I try to avoid night riding as much as possible. I dont like it. My vision is too restricted, especially when wild animals can jump out at any moment.

What is that gasket called if I need to buy a new one? Thanks. Great video.

It's the exhaust gasket. You can get one online from KTM World or AOMC.mx. Look at the exploded views for the parts breakdown. You can find it there.

I’ve wanted to remove the resonator since I bought my bike but I read that re-mapping the engine with an additional ECU (Coober) was necessary. SO, I’m really interested to hear how your bike performs going forward. I’m trapped under a couple feet of snow, so I won’t be riding for a couple months, at least. Give us an update on the bike after you’ve put 500 miles or so on it.

I had removed the resonator as soon as I got my bike back in 2020. The bike breathes freely without the resonator. I didn't feel the need for remapping. The internal sensors are able to compensate for the change.

@@fransmukidi2255 ... nothing that I can notice. However, I went back to stock after the service centre said that I would void the warranty. Also, the resonator delete pipe was a DIY setup from welded sheet metal. So it started rusting pretty quickly and turned into an eye sore. But it was a pleasure to ride.

What would be your advice for someone who wants to delete the resonator but keep things as quiet as possible? I ride in another country where stealth mode is more advisable but also heat is an issue. Venting heat faster to protect the shock should affect overall operating temperature, no? Any noticeable change in overall heat from the mod?

There is really no way to remove the resonator and keep the bike quiet. The heat under the seat is much better. The shock will not get the heat soak. I don't know of any other way to remove the heat and keep the bike quiet. You might be able to fabricate a heat shield, but not sure it will help much.

I have never had my bikes inspected for emissions or safety, only for VINs. As long as my exhaust isn't ridiculously loud I am good to go. I have registered my bikes in California and New Mexico.

New York state is cranking down .Every inspection station as of the new year has to have new updated computers "that they have to purchase" from the state and includes video feed. Could be as simple as resonator off.... resonator on again .. (temporarily) for some of us. Keep em coming!

Question for you: BDS says that this delete is not recommended due to losing power in the middle of the band. what do you think of that? I have already ordered your delete pipe and k&n filter. what do you think it will be like with the bds end cap added to that? will I need a fuel computer such as fuelx Lite or bds fuel computer do you think? thanks for the tips

I have seen the BDS stuff. The fuel controller requires the header pipe be replaced removing the catalytic converters. The new header is a straight through pipe. The resonator is required to maintain back pressure in this configuration. If you leave the stock header alone and only remove the resonator then everything is fine. You don't need a fuel controller if you only replace the resonator.

I should have removed the resonator a long time before I did. The performance improvement was very noticeable in the throttle response. I did not notice any issues with a loss of power in the lower RPM range, however, I also know this engine prefers to be ridden above 4k rpms. I rarely if ever ride it below 4k, even offroad. I have made changes to how I ride to keep the rpms up, which also give the bike great throttle response. From what I have read and what I understand the issues arising from removing the resonator occur when the entire exhaust system is replaced with one that does not have catalytic converters. Without the catalytic converters the only way to establish back pressure is with the resonator. I have seen riders have to re-install the resonator because of this. I have read that if you use a fuel controller it is recommended a new header pipe be installed, without catalytic converters. Thus, you have to retain the resonator. In my case, I have not wanted to use a fuel controller for this reason and only removed the resonator. I think the results have been great this way. The bike is maybe 15% louder, I don't have a good way to measure this now, but completely tolerable. Hopefully this helps. Let me know if something here doesn't make sense.

It has worked really well for me.

The long bolt that goes thru the sleeve is hitting the frame where the footpeg attaches. How did u clear this to get the long bolt out?

Ah, yes, that bolt. I know the bolt. I grabbed with pliers and used a screw driver to pry it away from the point it was making contact. Try that.

Just curious, new rider here, id I bought a slip on exhaust for my bike would I have to do and new mapping or anything with the computer or anything like that??? Just curious as I was thinking about putting a new one on my bike but I'm not sure if the answer for this question

If you are only replacing the muffler and not the entire exhaust, you don't need new fuel mapping. Just swap mufflers and go ride.

Would you consider installing an o2 sensor eliminator?

I personally would not do that. The O2 sensor is part of the closed loop fuel map calculations. I am not sure how the EFI would function. The bike would have to be mapped with a fixed fueling map.

How is this pipe holding up cosmetically? I'm about to put one on and contemplating painting it black. Did yours dull up any... closer to header pipe color?

I just looked at pipe. It is showing a little rust but I am out on the east coast right now. It look better than the header pipes do and certainly does not look as bad as some of the resonators I have seen removed. Overall, it looks pretty good. Once I return to a dry climate I will clean off all the rust. around the welds.

Good question. I am not sure I have seen much of a difference. I have been getting between 65 to 70 mpg now, but I was close to that before.

Curious if any additional feedback after the install? Any codes, etc?

So far no codes have shown up, but I havent had a chance to get many miles on it yet. First weekend of February will be a long weekend with 500 to 600 miles. Should see it then if any come up. The throttle response feels a bit better but it's hard to tell. The shock wont get overheated anymore. Top reason I did it.

Only by feel. The throttle response in the lower RPM range seems quicker but at the higher RPMs it feels the same.

@@mionggg if you remove the header with the catalytic converters you have to keep the resonator. Just changing the mid-pipe seems to be working well.

No to either. Using standard filter and did not need to reflash the ECU.

I grabbed it with a set a pliers and used a large screw driver to pry it clear.

@advmatt, any tips for getting that bypass with the mounting tube back in the mount? The mounting tube the bolt goes through seems so tight that I can't wedge it back in.

@@tsdmoto I had to loosen the header pipe and nearly take it off to get the pipe to slip together and to get the retaining bolt through.

I m noticing increase in heat emated after installing this. The radiator fan seems to turn on more frequently than before. Can you throw some information about this.

That has not been my experience. I am not sure why the bike appears to be running hotter. Maybe someone else will see your comment and will be able to provide you with some ideas.

There’s only one reason that would be your bike is running a little later hence, hotter motor means you have to cool it down and will turn on more often.

First, let's make sure we talking about the same thing. The catalytic convertors are located in the header pipe. The part of the exhaust that is the large chamber that sits in the swing arm is the resonator, not a catalytic converter. The resonator has no effect on the emission controls of the bike. It is only used for noise control and adds some backpressure. So if you are talking about the resonator I can only speak to my experience on my bike. I have around 20k miles with the resonator removed and my bike has been performing perfectly. If you are talking about the header where the catalytic converters are located you will need a fuel controller if you change out the header pipe. The resonator removal is fairly simple and in my experience was worth it to me. Hope this helps.

Probably, for engine issues. It won't actually cause engine issues but in my opinion if a company can find a way out of paying for a warranty claim it will. I can't say for certain.

How’s your bike running after removing the resonator ? People tell me that resonator kills power on too speed and it damage your engine because it’s warmer

Bike ran so much better after removing it. Best engine mod for this bike. Also removes the heat from the shock, huge bonus. I think this is a must do modification.

I don't see any reason not to. You can always re-install the resonator if you don't like it.

Please when you spend a few miles commenting as it is the behavior of the motorcycle. It really is very interesting that you do not have to reprogram the motorcycle in a dynamometer. However, I have seen many people who when they reprogram the motorcycle is much better, you should try it once.

is transfering the gasket necessary?

Not if you buy a new one, but you do need a gasket to keep from having an exhaust leak.

@@stupidmilkshake4887 no, exhaust tape is not intended to work as a gasket. I recommend ordering one. It shouldn't be too hard to get.

Hey! You pain in the arse you! ;) Ever since you told me about your pants leg catching on the guard over the rear brake, I've snagged my pants cuff on the dern thing at least once every week. Before your video ... it never happened! What's up with that?!?! ... I'll forgive you cuz I had a serious problem with fuses popping out and the bike not starting. After you reminded me to kill the engine with the kill switch and not the key or kickstand the problem stopped. So ... I guess I'll keep watching your videos. Thanks again, S

Wait, what? I haven’t had this issue with the fuses. Do you remember in which video he discussed it? What was the problem? I always only use my key to turn off the bike, even when storing it 😳

@@I_Santos_ I don't know. It may just be a coincidence, but once or twice a week my 390 wouldn't start. I got just a click. I checked all my fuses and it would start again. Since I started using the kill switch, I haven't had the problem. Turn on the kill switch, listen to the slight whirring sound and start her up each time and no problem. S

@@I_Santos_ It turns out that I had a loose starter solenoid connection. It tripped a fuse occasionally. Tightened it up, no more issue, but I still start/stop the bike with the switch. Other folks prefer to do that for various reasons on various bikes. S

If i put like this it will effect my engine?

No, as long as you keep the stock header pipe. Only replace the resonator.

No friend. When you remove the cats the bike thinks the exhuast is longer. You can see this in the fuel map on a dyno. You actually loose 1 to 2 hp from 10 to 20% throttle an gain 1 to 2 hp at 100% throttle

This doesn't remove the catalytic converters. The resonator is a separate chamber. Did you dyno this bike with the stock header only removing the resonator?

I'm so sick to death of people calling this thing a catalytic converter for this and other KTM bikes. You try to tell them otherwise and they just aren't having it. You ask them to look inside of it to find the catalytic converter and suddenly they go quiet. God damn, the internet is full of fools.

I wondered the same thing.. I did all of the BDSB mods and now I'm trying to decide if I want to get rid of the resonator.. I have been told by the owner of BDSB that it will kill mid range power and he has dyno results to prove it.. I think getting rid of the cats and keeping the resonator is the way I am going to go.

Billion dollar company with engineering that placed that shock in that exact position. An you some random guy says heat kills it. THEY TOLD YOU YOURE KILLING IT! Like are you trying to convince your wife on purchace?

The 790/890 Adventures have also suffered from failed rear shocks. There are after market parts for those bikes that attempt to shield the resonator heat from the shock. The shock is taking an enormous heat load from the resonator. I agree I rode this bike right up to its designed capabilities which is why when I was riding it offroad, loaded at slow speeds and high engine RPMs the shock took a beating. Removing the heat load on the shock from the resonator is not a bad thing. I probably did kill the shocks the way I rode the bike, which necessitated modifying it such that the shock would not be subject to so much heat. Oh, last thing, I don't agree with the suspension shop that told me the heat from the exhaust would not stress the shock. After this video I saw sevaral other suspension experts say the opposite. Thanks for sharing your opinion. I appreciate the engagement. Also, not married, I spend freely.

I forgot to add. When these bikes are engineered they are engineered to meet Euro4/5 compliance. That does not usually mean the bikes are optimally engineered. Just something to think about.
