KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S // WHY I WOULD NOT BUY IT AGAIN // Real Longterm Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Most reviewers get to ride the bike they are „reviewing“ only for a short amount of time - sometimes not even a full day. I am looking back on 3 years and 48,000 km of riding in EVERY possible riding condition with the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S.
I sold the bike and in this video I will tell you why I think it is the greatest bike I have ever owned and why I would not buy it again.
If you haven't already please check out my 2-year, 35,000 km Review of the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S
• KTM 1290 Super Adventu...
This video will primarily focus on the third year of riding with this motorcycle where a good part of my riding including off-road tracks, why I sold this KTM and what I bought instead.

It is such a rare pleasure to come across honest reviews. Most reviews are either too positive and, thus, seem more like an advertisement or just a bunch of nonsense anyone can find in a spec sheet. Real world experience and knowledgeable honesty is golden. You helped me decide on my next Adv!Thank you!!!

Congratulations for the upgrade mate. The R model in my opinion will make your ride easier in off road and you will not suffer on the road. I replaced my KTM Adventure (1090 S) with the Husky 701 Enduro and the difference exceeds the expectation. Now I can't cruise at 150 km / h on highways and go 600 km per day but with a windshield and an aftermarket seat one can ride for hours at 120-130 on the road. I don't want to travel on pavement any more and the benefit while off-road riding is enormous. Enjoy your new machine -Ride Safely!

Yes I did! I think it was about 350-380,- EUR at the time. I got it because of the warranty issues I had on my BMW R 1200 GS - I had multiple issues that were fixued during the warranty time - even though it was a pain the BMW service was excellent. However, I never needed anything fixed that was not normal maintenance on the KTM. I will get it again for my new R model - it is good insurance - if you only need it once it will pay for itself or if you sell the bike within 4 years (which I did) you can pass it on with manufacturer warranty -

Thank you very much Patrick - I am really excited how I will get along with the much taller R version of this bike - I have ridden so little this season that I could leave for a 4 trip tomorrow if I could - anyway- I am back with the Enduro Action Team tomorrow for a one day traing and my first day in the dirt this year. Also with the R model but not mine but the 2021 1290 Super Adventure R - curious to see how this will compare to the predecessor. I cannot spend the night due to covid restrictions so its going to be a very long day tomorrow as I will have to get their in the morning, ride the whole day and make it back home 😂

The stage where you are with your riding, your objectiveness and your huge experience with the S will make this comparison perhaps the most valuable one for every one who is looking to decide between getting a S or R. Well, the added suspension travel does not help with stable high speed riding (above 200 km/h) - with that being said - I think this bike is capped at max speed of 225 km/h I believe ( the S is rated for 250 km/h). This has something to do with tire speed index ratings here in Germany (for the bigger wheels sizes). Lower top speed increases the range of tires that can be used with this bike (don't ask - German regulations do not always make sense ;-) ). I am still within the first 1000 km in the breaking in period so I will not take it up to max speed in the beginning but I am expecting to go at least 200 km/h even with the large wheel set. we will see ;-)

Thank you for watching - glad to you like the videos ;-) The BMW vs KTM comparison on the off-road capabilities of their big adventure line up cannot really be generalized. The BMW scores well with low center of gravity, smooth throttle & engine response at low rpm and tight steering radius. Despite the heavier weight of the BMW it carries the weight very well. The exposed cylinder heads of the BMW are a liability even when well protected with crash bars (see our Sommelier video from last year). The shaft drive is good for maintenance reason but not very tough - it cannot really tolerate jumps (both wheels off the ground) etc. for extended times. Both offer off-road specific models with better suspension: The BMW adds A LOT weight in their "Adventure" bike but it comes well protected. The KTM is available with 18/21 wheels in the R version. The stock suspension of the KTM is superior to the BMW for off-road riding. For faster riding / more agressive riding the KTM R with better supension & larger wheels will be the better choice. So - it is a toss up really. You do not really have to go fast when riding offroad but when you have to go slow the better handling of the BMW will come in handy. I just rode the 2021 R model and the suspension is a game changer as compared to the S model - I cannot wait to take my R off-road ;-)

If price is no object the 2022 model has a slight edge over the 2020 model in my opinion- lower center of gravity and lower seat height are great improvements especially if you intend to take it off-road some times. It wasn’t 5000 euros worth in price difference for me. If you know the 1090 R the 2017-2020 will be similar in feel and handling. So if money is no object I would go with the 2022 - if it is the 2020 is still a very capable bike - maybe this first impression helps kzread.info/dash/bejne/aHZ7q7RuoM3PZtI.html

I was also looking at a ktm 890 but weight-wise that does not make a lot of difference compared to a 1290. Have you als considered a 890 r or what are your thoughts about that one?

  • @MotoVibes

    3 жыл бұрын

Actually, I did consider the 790/890 - I yet have to actually ride one myself but I am sure it is great for off-road riding due to the much lower weight and once you start looking at single cyclinder bike that gets even better. However, the long distance travel comfort goes down with it. The 790/890 would still be fine I am sure but I will still do a good amount of on-road riding and even try out the R on the race track once I get the chance. I really like the power of the 1290 on-road. If I could have 2 bikes I would probably look at the 790 or lighter to complement the 1290. As a matter of fact Thomas, my ridding buddy, bought himself a 350 EXC and is shreeding up off-road tracks in the Netherlands - he owns the 1190 R and had the 1290 SAS and sold for the 350 EXC as he was not really riding the S model last year.

I have not really offroaded yet (maybe tey to do a bit of the tet-trail in france this summer) because where i live in holland its mostly paved. But, since im planning to do some serious long distance trail (or degraded roadriding) in a few yours, maybe to kirgistan or something, im thinking of a bit lighter and more droppable. Good sum up! Still adjusting to my 2019 S, ridden it a wee over 2k km. Ergonomically it's not perfect, then again what is. Risers now next on the list. I'm still comparing it to my previous bike (BMW 1200GSA). The good old apples & oranges exercise IMO. They're very different in character. The GSA is more comfy, especially at lower speeds. A booster plug did however smooth things out on the S and closed the gap vs the 2021 S (tried it). I think it significantly improved the characteristics of the engine. And would without hesitation recommend the solution to anyone with a 2017-2020 S/R. Done almost all the things you've done with your S with my beemer. It never let me down, even when I went down. Not been on gravel with the S yet. But for my moderate needs I think it'll do fine. Contemplated on getting the R instead, but thought I'd miss creature comforts. Strange those aren't options on both models. We'll see how I fare on gravel roads in Scandinavia. That'll be one of the things to determine the length of my ownership. Cheers.

Hallow...aa a bike enthusiast and a fan boy of you i highly recommend to take the 2021 superadventure S model over the R model. And for better off-road capability can use the ktm powerpart offroad wheels and tyre as you done in this bike. R is good one but misses radar and semi active suspension.and this one is lot lower seat and hav much more touring capabilities extra. That is my recommendation for you...and to change those wheels for beeter offroad. Ok...its R comming...do onething brother...do good off-road include s mud ,sand rock .all...with good camera angles....because noone done it yet on new models.

I actually just got back from the Enduro Action Team and had the new 2021 KTM 1290 SAR for a full day and got to ride through some difficult stuff (at least fo rme). KTM have really done an amazing job on the new iteration of the 1290 Super Adventure series. The suspension alone from the R model is such a big improvement it is unbelivable. it will be a while before I put the video together on today's ride but it will be coming soon

Well, that is the price difference between the 2020 to the 2021 model - which I belive is already 1700,- Euro more expensive than the predecessor and now at 19.800,- Euros. Add to this the heated grips, quick shifter and rally mode (I currently use a dongle to keep the MTC turned off for offroad riding) and you are well over 20k. I did have to get the quickshifter again for the 2020 model but I do not have to buy the skid plate again, mirros, levers, radiator guard, Akrapovic exhaust which I can all take from the S model. AND I kept the crash bars and tank panels of the S which I will mount on the new R so I do not have to worry about scratching brand new parts and then replace them again later if I want to sell the bike again

It is still like the old 1290 but improved where it really matters: lower center of gravity which is actually a lot more noticable than I thought it would be, lower seat height was great for me and improved throttle response at low rpm. If the price difference had been much lower or they had been equal in price I would have most likely picked the 2021 model

Hi, the decision is not clear to me. You're mainly on the road, and an 890 R would have been perfectly adequate for off-road use. Who needs 100 to 160 hp with 240 kg off-road? But you need 170 instead of 150 rear tyres with a full 160 hp on the road, and that's what the S is actually for. I come from the manual suspension adjustment and wouldn't want to have it any more, because everything you adjust is just a compromise, because at some point you don't want to keep clicking around.👍

KTM has many known issues they keep under wraps (technicians know through service bulletins that are not made public) so that customers don't demand recall/warranty work. One specific issue is the slave cylinder failing on most models which can destroy a clutch and send the parts into the motor (you can guess what happens next). The majority of slave cylinders are quietly changed when a dealership does a valve job, but go unnoticed if you do your own service. Net/net, change your slave cylinder to an aftermarket one ASAP.
