KT Tape: AC Joint

AC (acromioclavicular) Joint injuries are common in contact sports or accidents wherein a collision with the tip of the shoulder occurs. In fact, they are the most common reason an athlete seeks medical attention following a shoulder injury.
In an injury to the AC Joint, the joint separates and causes damage to one or more of the four ligaments that keep it in place. Injuries to the AC Joint may also injure the cartilage within the joint, fracture the clavicle or acromion, or tear the meniscus inside the joint. If not treated properly, these injuries can later cause arthritis and severe pain in the shoulder.
An AC Joint injury is possible in a person who feels pain on top of the shoulder, took a blunt force to the top of the shoulder, or fell on an outstretched hand. In more severe cases, the clavicle will appear prominent and be sore to the touch.
AC Joint injuries can be very painful and take a long time to heal. For most separations or injuries to the AC Joint, this KT Tape application will drastically reduce pain, provide needed support, and speed the healing process.

I have suffered greatly with AC and Rotator Cuff pain post-op, commony known as CNCP (Chronic Non Cancer Pain) since 2002. Because of recent policy's imposed on on the Medical Profession by the DEA regarding prescribed opiate medication, I am hoping that the use of this tape will not only provide greater stabilization of the AC joint, but will also provide supplemental pain relief

Is this a better way to tape the AC Joint than your previous video for AC Joint Sprains?

Hello KT Tape, Between your two videos, "AC Joint Sprain, July 9, 2010, and your video here, AC Joint, Jan 19, 2012. I have a few questions. Which video do you recommend following? I have a grade 3 AC joint separation. Good range of motion, good strength. Currently I'm a hockey official, using my shoulder to skate and continue my pastime. I'm asking which method of taping do you recommend? Thank you.

Can you dislocate or damage this joint in a car accident, say, you get pulled one way and the seatbelt pulls you another and yanks on it? And you're perfectly fine for years, and then all of a sudden it just kicks up later? Like a delayed injury? Because thats my scenario(left side) and this stupid joint flares up every two to three days and i cant raise my arm past a certain point when it does. It reduces my range of motion and limits the basic ability to reach up and open a cabinet down to using my other hand because i cant raise my arm at all. And its been going for two years and i have freaking had it.

I'm having trouble with it sticking around the edges after a few hours. Could it be that the tape is not being stretched enough during application?

How many days in a row are recommended for taping. So, if the tape falls off after 2 days, do you immediately reatpe

Would you recommend this particular usage for someone who has laxity in the ligaments and often suffers subluxations of this joint? Due to a genetic condition, all of my joints are loose, but things that can help cut down on bone spurring from repeated subluxations would be preferred.

Josephine Thornton I think it depends on the area of the shoulder that's giving you problems. I'd assume one of the general shoulder stability tapings would be more helpful, though I'm no expert. Especially for conditions like Ehlers-Danlos, the best thing you can do is find a physical therapist familiar with the disorder and begin to strengthen the muscles that support the joint. That, and being very aware of the mechanics of your body.

This is a year later but I figured I'd just comment anyways. If you have EDS, the shoulder stability one is generally a lot better. If you have the type that causes lots of stretchy skin, don't leave it on for too long and try to take it off during a warm bath or shower to prevent skin tears.

You can immediately re-tape but if you've been wearing the tape for several days it may be good to let the skin rest a day.

We simply use different colors so that you can tell where the different strips are placed. The color doesn't make any other difference other than for easy illustration in the videos and personal taste while you wear the tape. 1 color would work just fine!

Francis Taylor I'm actually having an operation 9n it soon. It's more then just uncomfortable quite dibilitating actually. I'm from Canada where healthcare is supposedly free. Doc told me they would only operate if I was some high paid athlete until I started harassing my local hospital about it

farhad marounisi man it’s not just Canada, I spent nearly 5 years with the doctors refusing to help, I totally understand I haven’t been able to do much of anything for almost half a decade, I felt like I hit the lottery when I found a doctor that would so it. I hope it works out, it’s not so bad a week after surgery

Francis Taylor so weird that I stumbled on this convo.. I had ac joint surgery in February. It took me about four months to return to activity. But, it seems to have repaired and stabilized it really well!

Damn, I think I separated my shoulder yesterday night, I still don't know wich grade I got, but 4month recovery with no activity sounds like hell to me... I had a lot worse than that before (road accident, Femur broken), and then became very active, I hope I won't have to go to surgery and rest again... Did you guys feel the joint tear? how bad was your pain? I didn't feel anything on the moment (BJJ training), but when I got back home it started to hurt a bit more and then more the next day. I noticed my shoulder had this medium size bumped, and understood I had the AC thing. Any Idea of what grade I got it at the minimum? Is taping good for quicker recovery?
