One of the greatest assets that Balamurali brought was the essence of Thyagaraja and many other composers but proper pronunciation of Telugu. Including this one, I had hardly heard anyone properly convey what the great composers said. Of course being a brilliant singer, he took upon himself the task of bringing great Krithis of many composers including Swathi Tirunal. One of the greatest gifts to music. Thanks to technology of several generations, I am sure many will continue to enjoy his golden voice.

What to say about Balamurali Sir? He is the Music. Thanks for the song. I didn't have Devagandhari in my collection. I believe he is the only musician in the world, who possesses all the characteristics required by a vocalist. I'm mesmerized. He is the God to me.

This is probably the best rendition of Ksheera Sagara Shayana, even compared to other performances of Balamuralikrishna. Did not come across any other performance by anyone, including MS, coming anywhere close to this.

I believe you are incorrect and please to listen to MS rendition once more, only to want to listen to twice more. Both melodies are heavenly, but MS is clearly the standard all should strive for. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqSsrraEccetm9o.html to help you understand the heights achieved only by listening to MS Differing viewpoints welcomed.

The high note at 14:52 Taaraka Nama is not only extra-ordinary but also unique. Few musicians today can do this. Hear rendition by late late Mysore Raja Iyengar - he also does the same. This is a Kriti which helps you showcase your talent. Truly Exceptional and Flawless performance. A Masterpiece for Generations.

@@prasannakeshav indeed. I've heard a a composer saying that, devagandhari is such a raga which has the scope to go easily (or with the same flow) upto the deva gandharam...which is the gandharam above the normal tharashthayi gandharam.or the gandharam of the 3rd octave.imagine that much height....this was indeed really magical....I'm saying this after 6yrs when you posted this comment😁

Superb by Dr BMK Mama ksheera sAgara Sayana Ragam dEvagAndhAri Adi Talam Thyagarajaru Krithi In this popular kruti Tyagaraja narrates several compassionate deeds performed by Rama and prays to protect him also.He preaches that "Taraka namam"emancipates us. SrI tyAgarAja quotes various instances when the Lord responded to the prayer of His devotees and asks why He is neglecting him. O Lord reclining in the Ocean of Milk! O Lord rAma! O Lord whose name carries one across (the ocean of Worldly Existence)! O Lord praised by this tyAgarAja! Should You keep me in distress? I heard about Your coming quickly in order to protect gajEndra; I heard long ago about Your giving sarees to draupadi; I also heard about Your bringing to an end the incarceration of the brave rAma dAsu; I even heard about Your fame in crossing the ocean for the sake of sItA. Please govern me with compassion. Comment :- rAmadAsu - This relates to bhadrAcala rAma dAsu who was tehsildar under Muslim ruler of gOlkoNDa (later nizAM of Hyderabad). P ksheera sAgara Sayana nannu chintala beTTavalenA rAma || O Rama that reclines on milky ocean, why do you keep me in this agony? AP vAraNarAjunu brOvanu vEgame vachchinadi vinnAnu rA rAma || I heard of your compassionate act of rescuing Gajendra the king of elephants. O Rama worshipped by Tyagaraja, protect me compassionately. Raga Devagandhari Janyam of 29th mela Shankarabaranam. Alias: devagandari Arohanam: S R2 M1 P D2 S Avarohanam: S N3 D2 N2 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S This popular ragam is a janya of Shankarabharanam. Very often we get this ragam confused with Arabhi. Those who speak Tamil and have watched K Balachandar’s Sindhubhairavi would remember the dialogue in that movie between the Judge and the driver regarding the ragam for a Tamil film song and the argument was between Devagandhari and Arabhi! According to the experts, the differentiation comes only in the avarohanam. Since both are janyas of Shankarabharanam, this confusion is understandable. There are several stories about this ragam and Thyagaraja Swamigal, who had composed number of songs in this ragam. Prof Sambamurthy reports in his book that Thyagaraja was only singing Devagandhari without composing a song for a week and finally composed the celebrated krithi “ Koluvai Unnade “.

The Music Today release of MBK's Thyagaraja Masterpieces Vol 2 has another version of this divine song. And while it is shorter, it has even more feeling ... and the great man's voice has all the beauty and experience of age. It's like, after all those years, he has come into his own, using all that he has learnt and forging a new path and creating a sphere that few others have rarely entered. That version, for me, is the best ever. Totally unmatched. And while a lot of people marvel at how high he goes with his Taaraka Raama, my heart breaks at the quiet beauty of how he sings the Naareemani kee cheeralichhinadhi sequence. It starts at 9.28 in this version and it shows the master at the true height of his powers ... Listen to the whole song here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n36KksGwZsanpNI.html

At 14.52, Dr.Balamurali goes extremely high. I think he shouldn't have. Because the rest is so flawless and so beautiful. I wonder what the others feel about this.

Srinivasaraghavan SIVARAMA SASTRI Thank you for taking the time to explain this. I understand what you're saying, as I also listen to jazz where musicians (John Coltrane) go extremely high on their instruments. But my point is this: in an otherwise smooth piece without any unusual highs this one high sticks out a bit sorely. But now I will listen to this piece with this added understanding that you have provided and maybe I will be able to appreciate it even more.

Srinivasaraghavan SIVARAMA SASTRI Sri.Sivarama Sastri is absolutely right. This is a class apart. Most of the singers today do not take up these challenges - they compromise to a mundane performance.

I dont think he lost his shruthi any where... this was an extra ordinar level of singing at high octave... No on belonging to this generation can even think of reaching this level.... Its flawless and exemplary performance....

the krithi is in aadi taala. but this may well qualify as a vilamba kaala rendition (not sure if the vilamba adi taala terminology would be correct, as vilamba and madhyama etc are associated with kaala and not taala per se.).
