This is only a western adaption, listen to the original music by Ram Narayan, it'll blow you away, like it did for me, when I discovered it some 50ys ago...

Yes
how can this have only 30,000 views. this is quite possibly one of the most beautiful pieces of music i've ever heard.
Heartwrenching melody indeed ! makes my sould weep. Bhairavi in Indian Music/Philosophy represents "departure" or a "good bye"in its most general sense. That of a bride from her childhood home, and also that of the soul from this world...and that of the artist from the stage since the custom was to play it always at the end.... usually of a nightlong concert when the stars are just about to fade & world "wakes up" and music comes to an end. An empty stage lingers over the audience's minds.
The solo instrument its called Viola--an Italian name for the instrument. It is bit bigger than violin and sounds a 5th note lower than violins lowest note. Violin has G in low string and this instrument has C. The instrument has its own beauty. Worm and characteristic timbre is the synonym for this instrument. Another instrument which is giving sustain notes call Srutibox which is supporting instrument like Tambura for voice and instruments. If you can devote your time you can learn violin.
What other music is like this? This is by far my favorite Kronos Quartet song and I want more just like this song!

Muito bom! Tomara que vocês venham para o Brasil!
A great cover of the greatest Indian musician to date.
Anything that has the great Pandit Ram Naryaran is blessed with virtue, truth and optimism.
Enchanting!
I like the style of playing, different. this is what I feel fusion in terms of style.
Amazing
Será un muy buen repertorio según tengo entendido. que alegría !!
meraviglioso
simply beautiful and heartbreaking.
Epic!!
This is just beautiful. I know Kronos mainly from their work with Terry Riley, Philip Glass and other contemporary composers -- this foray into Indian classical music is choice.
Lindo!
LOVE - PEACE - OM
EPICCCCCC !!!
perfection only to my imperfect ears
@physphilmusic Its a miniature version of something called a harmonium, i think. It was usually played by beggers on a moving train or buses back home. Imagine like a piano but without electric power. You move it forward and backwards and theres air inside which produces that noise.
woah that viola
Under any circumstances this piece can never get categorized under Indian Classical Music. Fusion music? Oh yes!!
heartbreaking...that is indeed the word...
Beloooo......!!!
subhanAllah. wow.... :')
This is stunning, delicious, touching, deep.
Astonishing! Please, dear Kronos, record several ragas and make a CD only of ragas, we implore you. Before this performance we were sure that Western musicians are unable to perform Hindustani music.
Melody is immersed in a deep meditation.Who plays? Maybe God... :)
I don't know whether my comment is appropriate or not. As far as I know Raga Mishra bhairabi is a happy Raga. But I feel sorrow in this pice. But this one is a masterpiece in its own credit. Thanks...

Nice bro😂
finally a band named after the lead singer of Venom
Harmonium I think Known as 'Vaja peti' in India I believe, however there doesn't seem to be any keys so I'm iffy.
hank dutt is COOL.
Why is no one mentioning Hank is a gift from the sublime?
@theunknownpotter What's it called?
thats what I was thinking
This became an inspiration for my novel. Thats for helping my writers block!
:)
like
hello... what is the organ displayed during : 2:38 - 2:43 and is played by the man at the far left on : 3:50 ??? thank you very much :)
hey, but what's that file-like thing he's playing (the first violinist)???
@lenochka2221 I would not call this Hindustani music, it is not played with the right nuances. but it is pleasant to listen to and played very well
Why are they waering earphones?
isn't that a viola?
Ignore them :)
sur-peti
It's nice, but it's interesting to watch and hear the violist. As a classical violinist who has also studied raga seriously for a time, my feeling is that he is playing the melody too personally. Too personally expressive. IMHO, expression in raga is not like that. it's not a personal expression. Mind you, it is a beautiful sound, just that for me that mindset as I perceive it is hard to get past. IMHO.

+David Fiedler sounds a lot like any classically trained Indian vocalist imo

+David Fiedler So what if he added some personal expression against the conventions of traditional raga? So what? Still sounds refreshing.

I believe he was attempting to play alaap. Alaap is the exposition of the raga showing it's salient features but, also an interpretation of the raga by the musician. Without personal expression rasa could not exist. Rasa is one of the very foundations of Indian classical music. I do agree however, that his interpretation and insight into the raga may be limited due to his lack of training in Indian classical music. One can merely play the notes of a raga but, to bring the raga to life is much more of a personal journey. Aesthetically speaking I thought it sounded great but, in terms of focus on the raga there is a lack of clarity.

I agree. The violist is obviously an amazing musician and there are some phrases he executes very well that in isolation I would have thought came from a pure Hindusthani musician. But there are quite a few phrases that are very out of character for Hindusthani music, a lot of the articulations are not Hindusthani and some of his phrases sound Celtic-like to my ear. I've been playing sitar for 25 years and physically playing the instrument is one thing, but sounding "Indian" is a whole other thing. Its a difficult music to master. The guy is a great performer and while I dont dig most fusion music I am a fan of cross-cultural experimentation especially between the classical traditions.
well obviously a real hindustani sound will only come after years of deep immersion in Indian music and culture. They seem to have a more hungarian sort of sound. Enjoyed it though.
It sounds like a novice frankly. He doesn't play as if he owns it, he is off key quite often and not quite on top of the piece.
Kronos Quartet's world wide endeavour to play every musical form under the sun and moon should end at Indian Classical music. Swara is not something that can be grasped from notation.

+Haley Sabai Right. This is what I mean by my later comments. For those who want to understand this, please listen to Ram Narayan himself playing the alap from this raga, and you will see what the difference is.
Stop picking on me. Do you not have better things to do with your time?
FALSE ADVERTISING using Ram Naryan's name in the title. What's the matter could you not stand on your own withthis music?
Pity about the vibrato.
As much as i respect these musicians and this performance; the violin, to me does not sound Hindustani, but a bit GITANO.
Doesn´t sounds like indian classical music. Pure nonsense, like Ravi Shankar plays Mozart.
not bad, sounds like a New Age going-to-sleep music. doesn't get close to the real sitar & tabla thing, & the singing. i find these Kronos adaptations of 'world music' pretentious.
this makes no sense...
