Kronos 1st Gen VS 2015 Kronos2

This is a direct A / B comparison between the Korg Kronos 1 (First generation) and Korg Kronos 2 (2015)
I wanted to point out some of the basic differences. They're actually more or less the same synth, but there are some differences.
** Tech details **
Korg Kronos 1 has an Intel D510 motherboard running Intel Atom processor I think clocked at 1.6 ghz, where the Kronos 2 has a customized ASRock IMB-140D Plus (www.asrock.com/ipc/overview.as...) which is clocked at 1.86ghz.
The Kronos 2 comes with a 62gb SSD where the Kronos 1 comes with a 30gb SSD.
In addition, the Kronos 2 comes with 4gb of RAM (Mine did, yours might be slightly different) however the OS can only see 3gb of ram so it's mostly irrelevant.
There is the EXs18, EXs19 and EXs07 which comes as a free upgrade to the Kronos 2 owners. In addition, there are some sample libraries that come as free when you purchase the Kronos 2 available on the korg shop website.
Otherwise, polyphony, engines, software, etc... Is identical between the Kronos 2 and the Kronos. (The Kronos two has a front panel that is angled towards the user slightly, with wooden end caps and a vent, with larger CPU heatsinks and a very quiet internal fan)

My old piano teacher, who was probably in her 70s back in the 1980s, and had a full size Steinway in her lounge, used to say that some of the best pianos never tune properly in the very top end. Whenever hers was tuned she would always show me how it was out of tune in the top 3 notes. She said it was "character".

Still have mine here in December 2020. I bought it when they first came out. So in 2021, it'll be 10 years old. I keep finding more and more and more possibilities for creativity this far along. I have composed over 25 full songs, with my virtual singers that I created right from the stock library in the unit. It's the best investment I ever made.

@@tuneunleashed On the newer version, up till now, the only other difference, is that they don't have the libraries in the same locations. That's all. I should do some minor maintenance with my Kronos though. Maybe put a new key cushion under the keys, J, Y stick because its getting a bit loose and clicky sounding. But other than that, It works as good as it always has. Some people talk about how much the Yamaha seems "built for performance", based upon the buttons and other surface controls. But have no complaints about my Kronos. Also, look at all the artists over the years who are using it and love it.

Hi Dave, the problem with the keyboard action you mentioned was a manufacturing error. I had the same issue with my first Kronos and two warranty replacements. Hi David, and thanks for your very insightful videos. You mentioned early on that you would clarify which sound pack your were referring to. I think there is a very simple fix for the "Sweet Dreams" sound: Go to the Sweet Dream Program. Select EXI 1, then Step Sequencer tab In the right at the 5th step ( ie number "05" ) change the value to "60" and play a note to hear it. then save the program if applicable.

Great demo with really interesting comparisons. Three questions: 1. Do you think is is better to audition these synths with earphones or through speakers?2. Does the string resonance that perhaps shouldn't be there show up on their natty string resonance display? 3. Have you ever compared this new Kronos 2 string resonance piano with the one on the Nord Stage 2? On the Kronos 2 Berlin piano, the top A sounded a little 'flat' perhaps? Good point; it did't sound quite right. The Jump sound is exactly as you said - more front and centre sound on the original Kronos free sound. The K2 one sounded like it was already mised on the record and was a bit too much reverb. That happens on a lot of digital synths. Your piano note(s) on the K2 note with resonance on my crummy speaker sounded like it had quite a bit of resonance at a range of velocities and then the few notes straight afterwards sounded very dry by comparison. Maybe you had the sustain pedal on and then took it off. I would need to try it in the shop! The Tears For Fears number didn't sound as great to me as you said but the next song sounded much better to my jaded ears. Then when I played the video again, second time TFF sounded great! My ears were't quite tiuned in!

Dave Bellamy 1 - Depends on how you're going to use them. Personally, MOST of my usage is through headphones. When I make sounds, I feel like I can get them more accurate with headphones, but this is entirely a personal feel thing. Good monitors sound good, good headphones sound good. The stereo separation with headphones is more drastic, but personally I tend to be focused more on headphones. 2 - The string resonance I'm referencing isn't a function of the sympathetic string resonance, but rather the resonance the piano they sampled made when they initially sampled it. I could tell based on velocities; It would resonate pretty badly while playing a specific velocity layer, but play louder or more quiet and it wasn't a problem. 3 - Nope. I don't have a Nord Stage 2 and don't really have a lot of experience with them. When I've played them, they sounded great but until you do a direct A/B comparison with similar playing and such, it's hard to remember anything other than how it made you feel at the time unless there's something glaringly wrong. The Berlin Grand (Any pianos with an S appended after it's name) uses stretch tuning. I agree though that one of the notes that was sampled sounded a bit flat compared to the rest. I have to admit, the Berlin is starting to grow on me... But then as soon as I hear that resonance, it just rubs me the wrong way and I switch back to the German grand.

I certainly respect your rather grandiose ability to play and understand the machine and the written music!!!!!!! Bravo! This advise about the minor differences helps me, because I ran out and put the full price down with Korg when they were still talking about how great the first Kronos would be...in a few months... Keep it up!

I've only tried the demo of the Berlin Grand and I don't hear much difference, and the string resonance seems to do nothing. However, in your video, the Berlin Grand sounds much richer and deeper. What's your final verdict? Is the Berlin Grand worth the upgrade for Korg Kronos 1 owners? Thank you.

Kent A. Vander Velden Thanks! That's a good question. The more I use it, the more it grows on me. I like it for the solo piano playing but in a band mix I find it feels punchy with a too-fast decay. That said, it could just be the live settings and amps I've been going through. I still tend to fall back to the Oasys piano sound for live stuff that isn't too nuanced. If you need a raw piano sound, I end up with the Oasys... But I find myself going to the Berlin for the Berlin Dark, turn up the reverb and it feels like I'm playing in a huge hall somewhere. So it depends. It's growing on me after using it for 4-5 months now, though personally I wouldn't spend $150 on the expansion for my older Kronos.

+David Champagne I auditioned a Korg New Kronos recently, and completely agree with you about the center-octave resonances in the Berlin Grand voice. E above middle C was most annoying, with the piece I was playing. The German Grand, though, is clean and sweet - one of the best piano samples I've heard.

Hello David, Thanks for all your very useful and good videos about the Kronos. I got one a month ago. And I wondered if you're not bothered by the noise produced by the keyboard keys (as at 2:39). I had many keyboards in my life and I find this one very noisy. What do you think ?

  • @AudoraAudio

    @AudoraAudio

    7 жыл бұрын

Fred Liviou It's never been a problem. Every keyboard I've owned has made noise. The Kurzweil 2500/2600 was the most noisy, the PC3K8 was better. Yamaha S90 was the most quiet, but I didn't like the action of the keyboard. The Kronos is the best in between in terms of how it plays but the loudness will vary by what you have the board placed on. Just remember all keyboards make noise. Even pianos do but you can't turn down the volume of a piano. It's never been a problem ever for me, and keep in mind that the mic on my phone at the time is most sensitive to the vocal range which is around the same frequency that the noise is so it'll sound louder than it is.

A well done video. Having programmed sounds from scratch from time to time, I know that small changes to the filters and/or envelopes can make subtile differences in the behavior of individual notes/samples. The velocity transfer points between samples can also distort the pitch or harmonics sometimes. That high note on the piano is pathetic. It may be a true sample of the real instrument but is musically worthless. I actually prefer Baldwin acoustic pianos over all others I have heard, because they have a sweeter, longer sustaining high end.

As for the Asian guy, he messes up the songs on purpose, I believe, for any possible (but doubtful) copy write issues. He is great with his demos and yes, is quite the player. The Kronos nails the sounds for the songs... wow, that to me is one of my favourite features. Obviously good to know all those types of sounds reside under the hood but so great to already have them programmed; fantastic! I just bought a used Kronos 2 - with the wood sides. I think the wood panels look good! Kronos 2 does have NICE "piano like" keys as compared to my Korg Triton Extreme which are fine, but feel more like "synth" plastic keys - but again I have no problem with that. The Kronos 2 sounds are much more realistic than the Triton - which I used to think were very realistic, but WOW the Kronos 2 is really good! Kronos 2 sounds are comparable to some of the high end professional plug-ins. I'm trying to find a LIST of the internal sounds, and of course since I bought this used I don't have the manual. Didn't find it yet on the Korg website. Is there a "LIST" of the internal sounds online? How would I best dive into the menu to find a sound set like "Orchestral Drums" for example?

Now we need to throw the Kronos X in which is even closer to the Kronos 2. I put the fan on silent and a 2 doesnt have much improvements, except that the body is a bit different. Ram is also 3 Gb and 63Gb SSD Storage. The processor is manufactured on the 45nm node in opposition to the one of the Kronos 2 which is 32nm, a point for the Kronos 2 obviously. But the 10watts tdp of the Kronos 2s atom in opposition to the 13 watts of the Xs dont really matter. My X stays at 55°C with fan set to silent, which is more than cool enough. But the Kronos 2 only has 2 cores though and the X 2 cores with hyperthreading. As long as the polyphony is same though, it doesnt really matter. Do i miss a point?

+tommy p Good question Tommy. I use the Kronos 2 more than the Kronos 1, but it's not a functionality issue. It's entirely a location issue: I've been gigging and such, and the Kronos 1 has been in the studio while my Kronos 2 is in my livingroom. I bought a Surface Pro 3 tablet and have been using that with an interface to record audio here and there, so the majority of my playing has been on the Kronos 2. Also, when I do sound editing, I tend to sit in my livingroom and have the TV on in the background while I edit and so most of my 'work' happens there now. It's not because I don't have a need of the Kronos 1 so much as it's a function of where it's located.

Having owned the KRONOS2-88 for four plus years now, I've discovered the German grand hidden in the samples, but not listed in any of the programs and I made a new preset based on that. The Berlin grand sounds okay, but has a lack of character, sounding more like my daughter's piano teacher's 1939 Baldwin grand. G#4 sounds like the felts are too dampened. By contrast, the German grand I found and put on my preload has that classic Steinway bell-like clarity and articulate sound. It is by far, my favorite piano of all the instruments I own.

You can get the K1's at a VERY reasonable price these days - they might not have the Berlin Grand (EXs 17/18) which come pre-installed but will have very comparable things like Polyphony. The K2 is very slightly more powerful but it's negligible. It depends on how much you want to pay for a newer keyboard, keybed, extra EX's, more memory, more RAM out of the box, and what kind of deal you'd be getting on the K1. That said, I'd absolutely try and find a K1 over a K2 for the price difference and upgrade it myself to a K2 status.

Regarding the keybed difference, when I owned that 73, I didn't gel with the weighted keys action and sold it to you. However, many years later I got an 88 X and the keybed action was much better. I think I read somewhere that this was common (the retrig effect) in the first generation and KORG addressed this in the 2nd generation (X)

I think that Korg still has a way to go to compete with Roland on sampled piano technology. The supernatural technology that Roland uses seems far more real than what korg has to offer. But, as a workstation the Kronos rules! Jerold

Most of the preset and sounds that come with the original disks are stored on the hard drive under Preload and Extra Sounds or Extra Options. I forget what it's called. To load the sounds, it really depends on how they programmed the sounds. If they use samples, there's a loading process for that. If there's just the PCG, there's an additional process for that. (Check out my channel, I talk a bit about loading sounds and using things like PCG Tools which is an important tool) And I check in frequently, have started a company (www.audora.ca) and also give out private lessons for the Kronos so if you ever get completely stuck, I might be able to help!

The Kronos has a combination of wave sequencing, several real time step sequencers, some basic arpeggiators as well as a full blown Karma implementation which is far, far more powerful than anything else out there. Also yes, it has a 32 track sequencer; 16 midi tracks and 16 audio tracks. There's not much comparison, to me the Kronos is the obvious choice. @@paulallenMacca Hi John - yes, it's a fundamental sample issue. I purchased the EX17/18 for my Kronos 1, and the same sample has the same issue. It's that the sample itself (the piano sampled) had a pretty bad resonance/detuning issue. That said, there are LOTS of pianos in the Kronos that are all usable and even live, it's not really noticeable. It admittedly is me being nit-picky, but when you pay $4000+ for a keyboard, something like this shouldn't go unnoticed. It's certainly not a fatal flaw by any stretch, and it's really just one note that I noticed.
