One of his best.
Country music's poet laureate
Among other things is Kris's humorous use of double negatives and word play . Like " I don't believe that noone wants to know". Another example is "I don't need this town of yours more than I never needed nothin else." from Best of all Possible Worlds.
Anything written by Kris Kristofferson has to be a poetic , artistic genius... I love his work having grown into Country music much like Don...
One of the reasons that I keep coming back here when I see that you're doing musicians/bands that interest me is that I enjoy the way you consume and ponder and share your thoughts of the music and lyrics of songs, here.

@KevinRCarr Thanks for the kind words and camaraderie, Kevin. I’d much rather overthink something than underthink it, and I have a sense you are of the same stamp.
More great writing by Kris. I first heard this on late night radio. I felt like had discovered a hidden gem. Not much about Kris' talent was "hidden". (I may be wrong, but you seemed a bit confused when Kris referred to how long it had been since the eagle screamed. That's an old reference to payday.)
Fred Foster, the president of Monument Records had great respect for Kris from the beginning and gave him alot of control. Also Johnny Cash did write the liner notes for this album entitled Kristofferson
Waylon & Johnny Cash both do great versions of this.
Awesome song. Never heard this before. I like your take on this song and I agree
I like this song. Ive heard it before by Guy Clark I think. If not it was a similar artist. The music had a more ominous tone and made me feel like going into the bar for this man was a bit frightening or dangerous. Good story and yes got to believe someone cares.
the only way I beat the devil was with a angel at my side ... HAKAD
