So the reason Odin gave the horn to Heimdall was to safeguard it, since Heimdall is not only his loyal lapdog essentially, but his powers of foresight and immense speed make him the perfect candidate to keep it safe.

I like to think that the Mask and the Gjallarhorn is originate from Yggdrasil and it's trolling Odin because he's planning and using the tree root to hold Freya curse. Ratatoskr said that the World Tree is capable of thinking and communication and his fate changed from regular squirrel to immortal god-like being because of the Tree. Freya did mention the Tree is transcending space and time which means the Tree at least already experience the event of Ragnarok once or repeatedly. The Mask and Gjallarhorn have similar connection with either one or both of those aspect. Also Odin say whe he peek at the dimensional crack, he said something whispering and calling him, I'd like to think it was the Yggdrasil told him to buzz off. The Gjallarhorn maybe can't be destroyed because the Tree has reality alteration power and intent to make a regular horn to be a apocalypse sign for Odin demise. And lastly, the Yggdrasil did told Ratatoskr to make Mimir shut up because he's curiously asking about the Tree.

i think the mask and the tear is something related to whatever happened to athena, they both have that greenish glow and seem to be part of something diffnt than the greek or norse mythologys, some kind of primordial power even beyond the regular gods perhaps. as for gjallherhorn maybe that as well, or perhaps thats a relic from another land instead as we saw a few scattered around tyrs temple

  • @raihandw

The fact that we didn't get any explanation about the mask and the rift in the norse saga suggests that they might hold the truth about the creation of the world, like literally the whole world with all the phanteons there, how they're divided, how godhood works, and most importantly who is the real diety or force pulling all the strings. And like others said, it might explain why athena becomes a green ghost instead of, well..., dead. If they decided to continue the gow series, I think it will be centered around this mistery.

tbh I like that we never found out what the mask truly is. It represents Odin's search for all of the answers, and Atreus' choice to give up those answers is felt by us as well. In the end we don't know how the universe got here, but we can experience it with the people we care for.

I believe the Mask has to be connected to Ymir. The rift appeared exactly where Ymir was killed. We know Ymir was the single most powerful being in the Norse world, his dead body now making up most of the realms (perhaps making Yggdrasil his corpse?) I propose that the mask may be Ymir's soul, and perhaps wearing it would cause Odin to become one with Yggdrasil and the 9 realms, finally taking Ymir's place as the true All-Fafhwd

Spoilers for Ragnarok... Maybe it's just because of her appearance in GOW4 and because the tears Odin wants to open are green like her spectral form, but it really feels like Athena is controlling everything... again! Odin was obsessed with all forms of knowledge but his greatest desire was to gain the knowledge of life after death for God/a way for a God to be truly immortal - which is what spirit Athena seems to have! Odin only found the magic mask and tear in reality thanks to the advice of a mysterious 'spirit voice' in his head! It's an awesome theory to have the Greek Goddess of Knowledge be the one to tempt her 'sort of' Norse counter part into freeing her from whatever reality she's in... only to once again be stopped by Kratos- without him knowing too! Edit: Just checked, when the mask is introduced Loki says it isn't from the nine realms and then he reads: 'opsidani spitha' according to good ol' Google Translate detect language.... That's *fucking* *GREEK*! Yep it's Athena, she's the secret villain, this theory is confirmed in my heart!

Even the color of the rift matches Athena's so if it does, it actually makes sense for Athena to try and undermine other pantheons. She's clearly almost if not as powerful as Odin/Zeus since she was able to single handedly create the power of hope, upgrade the Blades of Athena without any equipment and even (almost) promoted Kratos into a god. Who knows what else she could do and how dangerous she is combat So I'd say she will make a perfect candidate to become the next big bad for the GoW series.
