Winner of 5 Academy Awards®, Kramer vs. Kramer is a ground- breaking drama about the heartbreak of divorce and the struggle between work and family. Young husband and father Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) loves his family - and his job, which is where he spends most of his time. When he returns home late one evening from work, his wife Joanna (Meryl Streep) confronts him and then leaves him, forcing Ted to become the sole caregiver to their six-year-old son. Now, Ted must learn to be a father while balancing the demands of his high-pressure career. But just as Ted adapts to his new role and begins to feel like a fulfilled parent, Joanna returns. And now she wants her son back.

This is a heartbreaking movie, Marriage Story seemed to be heavily inspired by it. Meryl Streep definitely deserved her Oscar win!

Your right about Meryl Streep she certainly deserved her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Dustin Hoffman also deserved his Oscar too !

I love how brilliantly directed this scene is. Joanna is obviously at the end of her rope as she spends her time either looking after Billy or waiting hand on foot for Ted, who obviously acts as though he isn't married. For example the moment Ted gets home, he completely ignores Joanna and just continues his work life by phoning up the office to give them a quick reminder he needs certain things on his desk the following morning. He is also oblivious his wife is in a mental state as she doesn't wear make up and looks rough looking symbolising her mental state. In fact the only time he notices his wife is when she announces that's she leaving him and he doesn't seem to bother on how upset she is to the point he won't even comfort her. And the elevator door closing symbolises that Ted and Joanna's wedding is well and truly over & Ted is on his own with Billy.

This is sad, it’s not a romantic comedy, it’s a drama about love going awry and child custody.

Between 1:34 and 1:35 Dustin slapped Meryl, you can see the red mark on her face and her demeanour has completely changed

His attitude is deplorable. It's not just that he's a workaholic for being the sole provider, it's that he doesn't even see her. And they reached this point, he still underestimates her perspective. That disgusting smirk even though she means her words and the situation is clearly serious... His demeanor is not intended to diffuse tension or her upset, rather it's dismissive and bordering on gaslighting. People take notes, see a person like this, RUN. By the way, extremely important advice for women in particular: work a job, do not depend on a man. A man is not a plan. Earn your own money and that gives you security and leverage, and it pays invaluable dividends in respect.

I remember this had come out already when my parents were going thru their divorce. It felt relatable, even at 5y/o. This part of my life sucked and these scenes still gut me.

I think he even hurt her hand when he grabbed the suitcase, you can see her react then immediately change back into character

That's called great acting. She never breaks character. She reacts in character. She's a great actress. No reason to believe she was actually hurt and that her reaction was "real." But even if she were hurt, she still wouldn't break character. She'd just use it. What you think is a slip is her being a great actress. She has a very authentic, naturalistic style here. She's one of the all-time greats.

Two actors at the top of their game. Now we’re left with comic book reboots and original programming from Netflix and Hulu. People are too fragile today to consume real art.

it's really not a great movie. and Hoffman should have won the academy award for the graduate in which he gave one of the great performances, ever! this is mediocre at best. nothing special with Hoffman's performance because it was a very mediocre script. and Streep is by very far, the most overrated actress in film history.
