KrakenSDR: Finding Multiple GSM Base Station Transmit Towers with the Multi-VFO Feature

Ғылым және технология

In this video we're using KrakenSDR to find the location of GSM base station transmit towers for four frequencies. We're also using the multi-vfo feature to capture the bearing data of these four frequencies simultaneously which can save us some search time.
Interestingly, it also turns out that the first frequency we search for is actually being used by another tower that we pass along the way back. The location of this tower was picked up on the drive back to the first tower. It's possible that these two towers which are a few kilometers apart are covering different areas with directional antennas.
Also note that the first two transmitter searches use the "auto-zoom" map camera feature, which will automatically zoom the screen to show both the vehicle and estimated transmitter location. The second half uses the standard free camera mode.
This is on a new build of the App which is currently in testing, so some things may look slightly different to the currently released version. The new app version will have some minor feature improvements.

Cool video, what if an unknown number of transmitters are on a frequency?

If there are multiple transmitters broadcasting at the same frequency over the same geographic area, then there can be issues and it will most likely just lock onto the strongest signal. You can experiment with the num sources setting in the GUI to try and get more than one bearing peak for each transmitter.

Congratulations, great project! I have a question, is it possible to use HackRF One in this project? I would like to get a wider range of frequencies, thanks in advance for your answer.

You need (5) five phase coherent receivers and the correct software.

is it possible to use 5 identical UHF antennas and 5 identical RF coax cables with SMA connector, just not the ones that came from Kraken.

What you described is not a problem. It's best to match all five sets with a VNA.

thanks! Please make more videos. For example: Linear Arrays: Why use them? What are they good for? etc. Airborne usage of Kraken: Whats it like to fly to a transmitter. etc. etc.

Good day. I don’t understand for work, do you need the Internet all the time for the program application to work? How is the link to the map done?

You can download offline maps before you head out. But in urban environments you can just use your phones mobile internet connection to download them as required.

Interesting, did not know how to use multiple VFO’s. I suppose this is only useful when moving around, not from a stationary setup like I use - as it appears to store estimated location for each frequency - not average bearing ? And - would prefer no ‘music’ - it is much louder than your voice, have to adjust volume up/dow every time you switch between talking and the ‘music’

It will work on stationary setups too. The logs are the same as when using a single VFO, it logs the bearing data + location data. Estimated location isn't stored, that's all calculated from the bearings. The web mapper at map.krakenrf.com doesn't support multi-vfo yet however, it's only available in the Android app. I'm fairly certain I normalized the audio, but will try to keep that in mind for the next video.
