    I bought my grandma (born and raised in Aschaffenburg, Germany) Kraftwerk's first three albums for Christmas a few years ago. It was the first time she ever heard Kraftwerk's music, and she listened to all three albums front to back, laughed and said "Wow, this is really psychedelic!!" Sadly, she left this earth on February 26th at 74 years old, but I just know her and Florian are up there having a good laugh about his music... Rest well Oma, I'm jamming this for you. 🤟❤

    I wish I could say that I had a grandparent who appreciated Kraftwerk, both generationally and culturally. I'm a 1st-gen American from a Dominican family, and I'm probably around your parents' age. I came to know Kraftwerk (like most people) around the TEE era, but have come to enjoy exploring their Krautrock roots thru Radio-Activity. Music is a wonderful teacher.

The song I use for Mondays is Tanzmusik from Kraftwerk's third album Ralf und Florian. I really gotta say these songs are perfect to listen to when waking up!

    These albums always feel like a reminder to keep moving forward, for me. Very constructive, and optimistic. Capturing so many different pictures of emotion, often with a tranquil but steady sense of progression. Florian may not have been openly proud of this early work but there are so many wonderful layers to dissect and learn from in it. I could listen to it on a sunny day, or a rainy one

    I don't know that this was "against the tide", this kind of music was actually pretty prevalent back then in the UK and parts of mainland Europe. I'm sure you've heard of groups like Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson...this is kind of coming from the same place.

  • @Wuppie62

    @Wuppie62

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@arkanoiddude Maybe those bands too were going 'against the tide' in their beginnings, considering the tide as being main stream popmusic? Because main stream pop music was more like schlager, rock ('n roll), blues, songs, etc. Kraftwerk wanted to break with both the traditional German music and the imported Anglo-American music of pop, rock, blues and string-instruments (instruments which they considered being rooted in 'medieval times'), and use new, electronic technology. That ofcourse doesn't mean they were the only ones experimenting, trying to find new ways.

    What many people don`t know: KRAFTWERK was seperated at that time. `cause RALF left the band from 12/1970-09/1971 and KRAFTWERK existd twice...there was FLORIAN`s Kraftwerk and RALF`s Kraftwerk (with other fellow musicians). Fortunately, both of them had the experience that only both together can be KRAFTWERK and so finally RALF came back. Without the other, it didn't and wouldn't have worked. No albums were recorded during the period that Ralf was away so what's your point? Florian was the only constant member from the beginning until his departure in 2008, so it's not as if Kraftwerk ever really existed without him. There was no "RALF`s Kraftwerk (with other fellow musicians)" at any time.

    @@truefunksoul8638 This statement with "Ralf`s and Florian`s Kraftwerk" is not a claim of mine, but can be read in the biography of Karl Bartos "The sound of the Machine". The point is, that Kraftwerk was almost over before it really started. Bartos biography is a very interesting book, because it gives a lot of behind-the-scenes insights into how the boys worked and why their music in all its facets became what it became. And I see you haven't read it, otherwise you would have known about "Florian`s and Ralf`s Kraftwerk" ;-)

    There was no "RALF`s Kraftwerk (with other fellow musicians)" at any time. You can misread or misunderstand whatever biography you like, then regurgitate it here to your heart's content with the incredibly lame 'now I know something' attitude exemplified by your execrable opening line "What many people don`t know" demonstrating your newfound 'knowledge' but I'm not buying it, so you can spare me the snide bullshit remark "I see you haven't read it" because I don't share your opinion. Arrogant conceited tool much?

    @@truefunksoul8638 For many years I´ve been reading biographies and readings to understand a artist behind his music and his music too. I´m not just a fanboy, I`m a musician myself and to understand an artist and his music helped me a lot during my musical education that began in mid 80`s and it´s just nice still learn today. I don`t care what you think what`s right or wrong especially if you seem to think that YOUR word outweighs that of a Kraftwerk`s band member (Kartl Bartos). Where is the arrogance? "Florian/Ralf`s Kraftwerk" was never an official project of the two, of course, (and it was just "so called" by Karl Bartos, but it was a necessary way to ultimately get back together and do what made their music unique.

    Kraftwerk, eh? An uber German entity, that managed to influence everyone and everything electronic, including black men from da hood in NYC. That is just so bizarre. Anyway, I like to think of Kraftwerk as giving us all a glimpse of what the emotional set of Germans feels like. It is at once harsh and mechanistic, but has a beauty none the less. And it almost worships technology. (eg Autobahn) I love how Kraftwerk so overtly toyed with the juxtaposition of beautiful things expressed in nominally harsh ways. eg Neon Lights. It's singing about beautiful ideas, but using the something so cold as neon lights. Harsh, used for chintzy advertising and brothels. Or "computer love" - the irony in the name speaks for itself, and there was no Tinder or Grindr at the time!. Or the sounds of birds in the forest, mimicked with synthesizers. Or music made with sounds so harsh, they are essentially the sounds of static. It was so well... krafted... but expressing emotions only, and making no political or judgemental positions. They were like Fritz Lang giving you a warm hug.

    it's a nice album, especially Kling Klang...it seems that side A of the album took much more studio-time and was more expensive than side B...for me the 2nd side of the album lacks the depth and the creative ideas that are present on the longest track 'Kling Klang'

    It's more like the b side of Neu! 2 - lack of funds turned into innovation, although this is more of background tone works while neu 2 was more car trips with a detour at an slaughterhouse. I find it interesting how they approach music made more for art films rather than their later techno pop material (no pun intended)

    I think what you're hearing there is just simply a "layer" effect! Most of this album is just tape manipulation, and they probably just took that piece and put it over itself again and again till it came off with that etheral sound.
