Kpop's Obsession With Wong Kar-Wai

Ойын-сауық

From LOONA to BTS to MAMAMOO, some of the Kpop's most iconic music videos were inspired by the films of Wong Kar Wai. In this video, we delve into the cinematic connections between the acclaimed Hong Kong director and the K-pop industry, tracing how his distinct visual style, moody soundtracks, and poignant storytelling have influenced the aesthetics and themes of K-pop MVs. Whether you're a fan of Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, or In the Mood for Love, or a K-pop stan curious about the artistry behind your favorite idols, this video offers a unique perspective on the cross-cultural exchange between cinema and music.

the wong kar wai and loona parallels are insaneeeee. Also the expiration dates and the three members' birthday just straight up blew my mind

makes me wonder if the members bdays are fake. which is not a surpise for kpop profiles and even with how narrative-driven jaden jeong envisioned for the loona project. that is too much of a coincidence.

@@latteARCHif it's not fake, then they didn't choose Wong Kar-wai, Wong Kar-wai chose them.

I loved this video! Loona takes some heavy inspiration from Wong kar wai and Bong Joon Ho. I think Sonatine MV should also be on the list. There's a really good video essay on the connections between wong kar wai movies and the Loonaverse on KZread by Details of the Loonaverse. I recommend it to everyone

its not only K-pop that does wang kar wai inspired, its largely K-movies in end of 1990s and early 2000 that were hugely inspired from it, then it went into K pop MVs and this still persists today, because most of directors of flim makers in Korea are wang kai wei inspired or somehow influenced by him. and I am that generation who are obssessed with Wang or Iwai Shunji

Thanks for creating this video, I knew about Bittersweet and TXT's Lovesong but I wanted to see more MV's with the same vibe, I think Wong Kar Wai's style is really remarkable within asian media 🙏🙏

I've always felt Jeongyeon's part in TWICE's Cheer Up was very obviously Wong Kar Wai inspired

I thought I saw TWICE's Jeoungyeon in front of a fan in (may be) Cheer Up mv reenacting Faye Wong in Chungking Express.

I agree, though there are probably other scenes of people laying their heads on someone else's shoulder in WKW's work. The absence of references to Happy Together in this video is interesting.

I agree, no matter how k-pop (or anyone for that matter) tries to recreate his ‘aesthetic’, they never really succeed in capturing the essence of wong’s work. After all, using moody lighting and references to his movies isn’t really enough to fully embody the wkw style
