Can't really call it. They're both great. The MODX seems to have that typical bright, "produced" Yamaha sound, while the Naut has the classic mellow Korg character. Visually, I think the MODX looks a bit tacky and cheap, while the Naut has the typical Korg elegant design, albeit a little bland. I dont think either is better. And both can be heavily programmed to change their character anyway. I'd be happy to have both.

I agree, as an owner of the MODX6 I can definitely say its a bit of a "Cheap" build. But probably one of the best bang for the buck keyboards out there right now!

LOL!!! It's leftfield, hilarious observations like this that make KZread what it is! I came here to see my beloved MODX in action and now I cannot stop laughing at the Nautilus "relaxing" in the background as you so brilliantly put it.

Woody: Uploads a video on MODX and Nautilus Roland: The sample pads on the FA06/08 are now velocity-sensitive.

It all depends on wath do you need a keyboard for. I am the keyboardist on a cover band. I need a reliable and versatile tool on stage, but over all, that have the sounds that match with the original songs we are covering. No need a " new sound" if I'm playing Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, INXS, Toto, Beatles, Tears for Fears, etc etc etc songs. Depending on where are going to play, or the repertory, I choose among my Korg stuff to carry on ( Krome, Kross2, Microkorg, MinilogueXD, sometimes the mighty Microstation) or a Roland jdxi. If I had to replace all that gear on stage with only one keyboard, it would be Nautilus. But if you compose and play your own music, maybe both Nautilus and Modx can be your best choice. I know people who just buy new keyboards for pleasure but not to play along with, on stage. It' fine too. My humble advice: buy what you need if you are a real musician, professional or amateur. Keyboard buying adiction is a remarkable expensive one.

I play the same kind of material in my bands. The MODX "IS THE BETTER CHOICE". Why? Because of exactly the reasons you mentioned. A lot of the "famous" sounds be be imported into the MODX due to it's compatibility with the Montage, MOTIF series (previous best selling flagship line) as well as 80s Yamaha's like the DX7, TX816 & TX802. And because the MODX can import all these file formats that have numerous sound collections made for them, your chances of finding the sounds you need are much more likely. Using Yamaha's sound sharing site, you can simply type in many of these songs and they will come right up with people that have reproduced them, or buy commercial recreations which are widely available. It's not the that Nautilus is less capable, but the issue is with it's file compatibility, or "lack of it". You can't import sounds from even the Kronos, which seems "pretty dumb" that virtually the same technology can't do that. As a fan of Korg since the M1 (I still own two), this is not the first time they've done dumb things like this with file compatibility. But that significantly reduces the usefulness of a synth for most people, until you happen to be an expert programmer and can recreate your favorite sounds from scratch. Due to this reason, for people like us, I would beg to argue the MODX is a better choice than even the Kronos if your looking for a synth not only capable of making all sorts of famous sounds your classic band might need, but that your choices of finding the sounds are you are more likely to be found on the MODX due to the wealth of different sounds can you import. Your back & wallet will also be greatly appreciative. Korg still hasn't learned their lesson and has come out with other synths of virtually the same technology other popular models (like their M3-R M1 spin off that went no where). Yet, the prices aren't reduced enough, the weight isn't reduced enough and they give people little reason to even consider them. So none of them were too successful as a result. Unless Korg significantly dropped the price of the Nautilus, most people would be crazy not to buy a Kronos or even used Kronos instead, just because of this one issue alone, plus other reasons too. Also note, the MODX is significantly lighter weight to transport to gigs, and significantly cheaper than Nautilus. I'd call that win, win, win. Seems like an easy decision to me, but to each their own, and their own needs. Decide for yourself.

@@TheFlextec That's right. I've been using Windows laptops running soft synths in my bands since 1997, and using soft synths on computers since 1985. Since the VST format came out in 1999, almost every classic keyboard is "modeled" faithfully of the originals in software. It's sort of like the Kronos or Nautilus concept, except "thousands" of keyboards are modeled, and ones most people actually care about unlike many of the 9 engines from Korg, which were far from best selling keyboards. Korg's hit keyboards were from the digital era which very ironically, they didn't model. They would have been the "obvious" choices. One laptop can trigger several MIDI controller keyboards at once each running splits of various synths. On some songs I have up to 9 modeled sound engines running at once. I run modeling of various "famous", "well loved" keyboards used on "hit songs" like Oberheims, Moogs, ARPs, Prophet, etc. I also have great Hammond/Leslie sounds, Mellotron, Fairlight, Synclavier and much more. Why Korg choose to model the "unfamous" is beyond me. Clearly not the ones people want in the analog domain. Even more odd, Korg obtained the rights to ARP. Why in the world isn't there a modeled 2600 or Odyssey as one of those engines? And again, Korg offers them for computers, but not as a Kronos engine. Crazy. I love the ARPs. I owned one made in 1973, which I replaced with a soft synth of it since it was so close in my A/B tests. Thanks on the compliments on my band's Styx cover. Styx has been my favorite band since the early 80s, and my drummer's since 1977. We cover about a half dozen of their songs, and I've learned most of their popular catalog on keyboards. A Styx tribute band would be one of the few I'd consider some day. I was considered for one, but they were far away from me. Genesis is my next favorite band, and I'm big on the prog rock era / influenced bands. The MODX is a great keyboard. Though soft synths are my main thing, it's always important to have some kind of hardware backup plan just in case. And also, with massive sound libraries to tap into on the MODX, you would no doubt find some useful sounds you didn't end up with in soft synth format, no matter how great they are. There is a popular Yes tribute band that gigs using all soft synths, no hardware backup, only super small light weight synths playing all large theaters. I wouldn't risk that personally. I hope Korg comes out with a Kronos VST so I can tap into those sounds too, but if I could only have one it would be the MODX along with my soft synths, more than make up for any shortcoming of MODX alone, just as, Kronos along wouldn't be too satisfactory for me.

The intro with the Nautilus is unbelievable.The sound of the drums are perfect.

Modx is a different breed. The superknob really is a game changer; and the sounds and programs are really good.

*modulation options*, having a second mod wheel is nothing new, just look at the SY99 or JD-XA, MODX's mod capabilities are what make the "lighted mod wheel" next to its screen stand out Nautilus, Krome EX, and FA have fairly similar enough mod capabilities, especially the Korgs for those that program their own performances in

Yamaha engineers are more clever than the Korg's ones, because you don't have to change anything to have a great sound, in the opposite, Korg uses pretty flat and opaque factory sounds, you have to retouch the instruments for creating a good decent sound, that is what I hate from Korg.

As a long time Montage user, you cannot overestimate the value of the Super Knob technology. It is a stunning achievement I have not seen matched by any other software or hardware instrument. The interactive capabilities of the Super Knob, and the Montage libraries, make the MODX a superior value. Besides I can get a used Kronos for cheaper than the Nautilus. I sold my old Kronos for a Jupiter X but having sellers regret. Stephen Kays KARMA on the Kronos makes all the difference, much more evolved than the ARPS on the Nautilus. Kronos and Montage are the most feature rich keyboards available today, the MODX has 80% of the Montage. I like aftertouch so I won't have either but if I had to choose....go for the super knob, you will love it.

I might add that the foot controller for the superknob adds more value since you don't have to move your hands from the keyboard.... a good investment IMHO.

Well, I've been excitingly championing the Nauti until the last video when I decided the MODX sounded nicer. This cements that. I think the Nautilus is brilliant but the tone of the MODX sounds superior to me. If the Naughti were cheaper than the MODX then I would go for it. But in most cases it is (currently at least) actually more expensive so I have to vote for MODX. But their both fantastic and I can fully understand somebody having the opposite opinion.

maybe out of the box, but it is not recommended to judge any keyboard from factory settings and sounds. Any type of this videos may be very misleading about how you will actually feel about keyboard when in person. Just for example even judging by video samples some tones from this particular video are way better than in upper video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oml50NOTpKjcZpc.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/oml50NOTpKjcZpc.html. those are just so on point sounds and cutting through mix it is very hard to imagine yamaha is any better especially for live performances and analog sounds.

@@majsterV But that's just the problem with the Nautilus. What you get out of the box is likely, most of what you will be offered. Had Korg made it compatible with the Kronos which is virtually the same technology (that's like making a nearly identical Xbox, but it can't play any of the tons of games in that format except the packed in games and a chance of a "few more" they could offer) and offered a way to import Triton sounds, M1 sounds, Wavestation this would be another story. But MODX does all that. It imports many different formats of their most popular synths over the past 20 years, and 3 models from the 80s too!

Man I'm sorry... The Nautilus may be more expensive and have better specs but the Yamaha sounds seem to cut through the mix better, especially the horn sounds. Plus those fm sounds! You can't beat them.

Korg does import the old legacy DX7 patches, from what I understand. But it’s not the newer “8 operator” FMX

Nautilus sounds like a arranger keyboard. I hope someone does a straight up comparison of bread and butter sounds.

9 yr kronos owner, 2 month modx owner. ironically, your demo made the modx more convincing. the MODX performances have character.. I didn't hear much on the nautilus that was particularly inspiring. maybe try different combi's ? or turn down the nautilus delay and busy arps.

Gosh….. really love the sounds on both. I love Korg’s pianos but the sounds that come out of the MODX are just amazing for the cost. Maybe just need both.

It seems to me that, since the mid-90s, not a lot has changed in terms of workstation sounds. Having said that, Korg keyboards seem to consistently lend themselves to more soundtrack-scoring type stuff with some superb atmospheres and ready-made sequences, where Yamaha have gone for more authentic reproductions of (particularly) acoustic instruments. The Yamaha, in my opinion, sounds a bit more sterile than the Korg. They're both great, but I'd rather spend the dosh on something like the Output sample libraries, which offer some great sounds for less moolah and which take up a lot less space in an already cramped studio environment. As usual when watching videos like this, I listen without looking too much at what's going on, just waiting for something to grab my ear so that I switch to the video to see what's going on. And, I have to say, the sound demos that mostly grabbed my attention were from the Korg. Great video, Woody - keep up the good work :-)

@@Jason75913 That's a good question. I guess what I was trying to say is that workstations always provide the same, stock-in-trade gamut of sounds. But maybe that's a little unfair because that is, after all, what they are meant to do! It's just that, every time a new workstation comes out, it offers upgraded versions or newer samples of the same sounds - and I kinda got fed up of the urge to upgrade my gear every time a new workstation came out, of constantly feeling that I had to trade in my old gear (at a loss) to get the latest sounds. Yes, there are obviously improvements in the key sounds (e.g. the Rhodes piano sounds that Woody has demonstrated), but a lot of the Combi patches sound pretty much the same as their earlier counterparts; I've similar sounds in my Korg M3 and Roland JV-2080 and XV-5050 (and, possibly, more interesting ones going back to my Korg N364 or Z1). They're more of a novelty feature; yes, they're mildly entertaining for a few minutes, but they can't really be said to be hugely useful - as I speak, the trumpet trills at 3:44 provide an excellent example of what I mean and, before that, the marching band at 2:30 is something that sounds more at home on a home or arranger keyboard - fun to play maybe, but when would you really use it in earnest? So, I guess I may have been a little unfair in suggesting that the basic sounds don't improve - Woody's in-depth analysis of the Rhodes sound demonstrated that - but rather that there's maybe something of a lack of imagination in all of the "accompaniment" or "mood" combis. My latest synth purchases have been the Behringer Deep Mind, ASM Hydrasynth and Korg Wavestate - nothing to do with standard workstation sounds! For live work, I'm still using a Nord Stage for the organ and piano, with a Korg M3 for the rest of the "bread and butter" sounds, and a Novation KS5 for the synthi bits, because I love the KS series :-) Yes, I'd like to upgrade the M3 to the Nautilus but can't justify the cost. And, for the more orchestral sounds when recording, no workstation is going to come close to a dedicated sample library. It's still a good question, though, and you've called me on what I now see as something of a glib, throwaway comment that needed further explanation. If a lot were to change, then I guess it would mean, for me, moving away from the pre-programmed accompaniments and more into dedicated sound samples that could be useful in a DAW.

@@billyruss now your sentiments make sense, though I was hoping you'd say something like what you did The rehashed Combis (if perhaps sometimes watered down a bit) is the bloody lazy part from Korg, Yamaha, and Roland, but Yamaha actually bothered to change that up in MODX/Montage, and oh look, the MODX is selling like fresh hotcakes. Also, dat FM-X engine. Combi patches in a live setting are situational and willl need to be reprogrammed by each end user to their needs in most cases. But they are definitely useful. I'm sure not seeing that big of an upgrade in Roland's new Zen-core products versus FA, JD-Xi, and Juno-DS as far as the synth engine, as an example, so the old JV and XV modules are worth keeping, maybe they'll be obsolete when Zen-Core 2 or whatever rolls in. Umm, Wavestate is a 4-part Korg rompler with a gimmick and even more modulation options than what Krome, Kronos, and Kross offer (and they offer a lot already), but no linear sequencer like Korg's workstations. Seems to be a blend of workstation and arranger features, but it is a rompler "at heart" and definitely related to Korg's other romplers. And I want one as well. 😁 Pretty much the only useful sounds worth recording to a DAW will be synthy stuff, while Kontakt renders the acoustic sounds in keyboards fully obsolete, in most cases. The acoustic samples could be useful depending on your EG/filters setup in a particular patch to get a synthier sound with a texture and nuance you wouldn't get with the regular synth waveforms, but most folks won't do that. I don't know why Korg/Yamaha/Roland don't pump out better romplers than what they are doing, maybe they are over-burdened with the features folks demand and have to skimp out on quality as a trade off?

@@Jason75913 ​Exactly. There always seem to be the same job lot of band and orchestral arrangements. The Wavestate, on the other hand, doesn't attempt anything like that - despite being a ROMpler, it's a different proposition entirely. And it's "gimmick" certainly works for me :-) It's the tweakability of the sounds that lead you into hours of knob twiddling and general messing about that can absorb you for the best part of an afternoon :-)

I'd have to agree that Korg in the past 20 years seems to go for more soundtrack atmospheric sounds than Yamaha, and that Yamaha has gone for more authentic acoustic instruments. But the Yamaha ones are not sterile. I also agree soft synths and sample collections are a great option. I lived without having a model workstation style synth for years until the light weight, powerful, affordable MODX came out and made me want to use modern hardware along with my laptop of soft synths and classic hardware. There have been some improvements made over the years since my Korg M1's, but I'm still amazed how that old synth can still make a lot of great sounds I don't hear out of newer Korgs or my Yamaha. The M1 VST covers them well however. The really amazing part is how even realistic acoustic instruments like saxophone still sound way more realistic on the old M1 than the Kronos or Montage. I have heard online converted M1 factory patches to Kronos, but the M1 was all about the tons of great sysex patches just like the DX7 was. Orchestral sounds have seen some improvements because of 24 bit sampling and much larger samples. However, even the M1 made some great patches for orchestral and atmospheric I haven't heard out of newer Korg's. I have a lot of old favorite patches. I still use them a lot over a newer synth. It's amazing how they could do so much with so little memory in the old days. They have so much now, but you have to go through tons of patches to find anything overly impressive on Kronos, Montage or Fantom I tend to think.

Sempre bravissimo

Two very different types of boards. If you need to compose and arrange, build combi templates for gigging, provide large backing tracks for live or studio situations (much like a Keyboard Arranger), and if you like to do sampling and audio recording into your workstation then the Nautilus is a solid buy if you can't afford the Kronos or the new Roland Fantom. A Yamaha Motif can work as well if you get one used. The XS and XF series are great. A Kurzweil PC3 or PC4, and now K2700 or Forte are also excellent. The Yamaha MODX is really more of a performance board for live settings with tremendous controls and they are great for sound design. If you desire a killer FM engine then the MODX also has you covered.

Well, that has to be one of the most impressive demos on YT ever!! BRAVO!! BRAVO!! If only the other YT stars would try and match that repertoire to synth effort. Since 1988 actually. M1 had awesome sounds way back then. Ever since it's been, what great sounds would I loose to upgrade in another keyboard from Korg? Solution for me was MODX & M1 soft synth from Korg on my laptop.

Thanks for taking the time to blow us away with both boards . Question how can I kill the sustain on the bass patches I play a lot of keybass and when I press the sustain pedal the bass sustains killing my keys side playing live.

Great video! Both machines sound pretty good. I own a modx myself and am very pleased with its versatility. Soundwise both of them appear to be in the same ballpark. Thx for the demo Woody.

Great video again. 👍 On part 1 at around Min. 4 the Nautilus reminds me of some Jean-Michel Jarre stuff, on this video some sections remind me of Tangerine Dream - really amazing! The stuff you played with the Nautilus sounded more versatile and useable for those who want to have good soundig quick results. I loved the 1on1-comparisons at the end (I think the MODX is a bit ahead here) and would be excited if you would do more of that and also a general comparison of the specs and functions of these two "guys". And how does the Roland FA-06/FA-08 compare with the Nautilus and the MODX?

FA is less inclined to performances like the Nautilus and MODX oyt of the box, you would have to set up more of those yourself. Synth sounds are better, acoustic sounds fall slightly behind the MODX. No FM synth engine on the FA, though, but it does instead have excellent percussion. FA also lacks a side-chain compressor.

It may be good to mention two keyboards are compared here that have a 100% price difference. MODX 61 can be had around €1100, Nautilus 61 is available on pre order around €2200.

Hej Woody! What’s your take on the quality of the keybed? Is it better or worse than the MODX? I feel the MODX is a little to light on the touch and is really noisy (especially the black keys are “clacky”. What say you? Great vid! /Mack ps. What sound pack is that you have on the MODX? Ds

hi friend, no, it's been many years since I was a gigging musician, now yt is my stage and you are my audience! suits me quite fine these days, although I do miss jamming with and learning from other guys.

In this demo part 2 you made more justice on Nautilus which sounds terribly good in combo mode compared to the 1-2 tracks used in the Modx.

There is no doubt that the MODX is lightweight and therefore flimsy. But the sound of Yamaha is by no means affected by this and looks more confident than that of KORG. You can argue on this topic for a long time, but undoubtedly string orchestras and pianos surpass similar ones and KORG, thanks to Wooddy for your efforts!

@@WoodyPianoShack Totally agree. Some Montage owners think the MODX is cheap plastic, with a poor keybed. I disagree on both issues. Love my MODX. And I played on "premium" keyboards for most of the last 30 years. Over blown issue.

Both sound great but my choice is the Yamaha. Sounds more like a ideal synth for a pop/R&b/Rap/trap producer.

Excellent video! I had a KRONOS for about 5 years. It was a great sounding synth, but it gave me fits. It sometimes locked up, more than i could tolerate, and i was always having to check my fan temp because it just bugged me. I eventually sold KRONOS and went with a MODX and CUBASE. I think MODX has way better bread n butter sounds than KRONOS/NAUTILUS. I even prefer the MODX pattern sequencer over KRONOS/NAUTILUS sequencer. Still, KRONOS/NAUTILUS are great workstations with great sound. At the end of the day, i am much happier with MODX.

Awesome story. Largely what I have heard, and what I've believed. I've heard of countless Kronos crashes on stage. Might as well run my VST synths. I have a MODX too. No matter what you use though, never trust just one keyboard. Always have a spare of some sort. Doesn't mean you need to break your back carrying a heavy keyboard.

Absolutely love both of them. They’re like the junior versions of their fathers Kronos and Montage! I own a modx7 and it’s been my best friend for 2 years. Easy to use and great for live performances! ....but I’d love to add that Nautilus to my arsenal 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

The MODX is the Jr version of the Montage. The Nautilus "could have" been the Jr version of the Kronos, and welcomed by me as an alternative. But it turned out not to be. It's more like the Jr version in an alternate reality, because they don't speak the same language. You might be better off buying a used Kronos before buying a Nautilus. Now if only Korg would come out with a Kronos VST I'll be happy as I have my MODX. One area I do like Korg presently is their software synths. Yamaha isn't offering hardly any really. There seems to be a better chance of a Kronos VST in the next few years than any kind of Yamaha soft synth from Yamaha. I know Steinberg includes some MOTIF sounds in Halion, but not the same.

The sounds of both are good.The modx is an montage in a cheaper package.

The comparison is nice, but the best bits are the various famous tunes. Is it possible to play them in full sometime? Hopefully without some form of copyright infringement!

hi ralph, i don't think I ever played or kept full versions, these were just small jams to capture the vibe of each, but there are some longer demos of both on my bandcamp page and patreon!

Can you please make a video of the stock sounds? Non arp but just pound for pound basic sounds in all categories.

i doubt I will do that, the bread and butter are basically the same as the kronos, which must have already been covered. plus where to draw the line with so many stock sounds? alto sax, tenor sax, soprano sax, bassoon, vibes, cello, pizzicato strings, the demo would go on all day :)

I had a Yamaha before, now I bought a Nautilus and compared to the Nautilus it is simply a quality gap both in terms of sound and construction of the device in favor of the Nautilus. I have the impression that most people who comment here do not have or have not had this equipment at home. If you check the sound on the headphones, you will see that Yamaha compared to Korg is just advanced toy (Modx is not Yamaha Montage). In addition, the keyboard taken straight from devices from the lower shelf. The price difference is small and the quality difference is huge. And the next "Plus" model is already a deadly price joke.

As a Brit, for me it's all about toast management - crumbs would slide nicely off the side of the MODX but get horribly caught in the side of the Nautilus. That said, I could definitely fit more pots of jam, plates and napkins on the Nautilus, so it's hard to pick a winner.

This video shows you how yamaha is at a level where korg will never reach, for only 1300 dollars you have a keyboard superior to the korg, I don't know why they continue to disappoint me in every keyboard that korg brings to the market. And the funny part of the video it was that even so woody showing us the worst performance of the modx, the modx impresses me more. The problem with the korg is that it looks like an arrangement keyboard and not a synthesizer. It is going to be difficult for other companies to achieve what yamaha did with the modx, better price, sounds and quality.

Yamaha keyboards are simply the kings of all keyboards. Roland and korg try to copy and they always fail miserably. Modx is about $1500 and it is almost as good as Yamaha flag ship keyboard. Its extremely light weight and beautiful. No keyboard can compete with that. I still have my motif sounds in my modx. The FM engine DX7 usually takes me back mid 80s.

I pretty much agree with you, and certainly between these two keyboards. Korg has come out with innovative products however. The original M1 was ground breaking for example. Best selling synth of all time. They're rarely been as innovative as that for the time a new keyboard came out. Kronos is probably their best keyboard since the M1. I bought a MODX and would take it over a Kronos even if they were the same price. But that's me. Because reduced weight "is a feature of great value", and because of the file compatibility to load so many great sounds which I believe the MODX can load more sounds I'd be interested in than what is available in Kronos formats. With a MODX you not only get a Montage, but you get a MOTIF XF/XS/ES/Original (4 synths), plus a DX7, TX816 & TX802. That's a lot of sound collections to go through! The MOTIF series I believe were more popular than Korg's Triton series, and tons of great sounds are available in MOTIF formats the MODX can read. The Kronos can't read Triton sounds by comparison. This is a big deal. Not only that, but the Kronos can't even load Korg's own most popular digital synth files, which is a real shame. But they did model Korg's own analog synths, which weren't all that popular! I don't get it. At least include the engines of your most popular classic synths in those 9 engines, not the unpopular models.

Vs the keybed of the MODX or of the Nautilus? For all the complaining I've heard from some on the MODX keybed, many of stated the Krome keybed was actually much worse than the MODX keyboard. But since the Krome likely hasn't sold in big numbers next to the MODX, probably not enough people to make a big deal about it.

@@n8goulet 61-key Krome EX likely sucks the most versus the 73 and 88 key versions, no idea about Nautilus, while all the MODX versions have unimpressive keybeds for their price versus Krome and FA

I have a different answer to all , I owe a modx 7 and a yamaha psr sx 900, to be yamaha psr sx 900 is the best , easy to use, lot of inbuilt rhythm and voice sections , with multipad , vocoder, inbuilt speakers , life is complicated , I will use a keyboard which I will relax , anyway buddy great playing watching u since psr 950 , then 975 .

They need to get with Akai for drum sounds.

I've had a Montage for a year and a half, but was very disappointed with the sequencer from the beginning. I know people are moving to DAWs but I have a disability and need everything to be in one unit. I know the Korg still has no linear sequencer, but from what I understand, you can have numerous patterns of various lengths, tempos and time signatures that can be chained together for a song. The Montage/MODX is limited to 8 scenes, one tempo, one time signature to create a song.

Woody please get montage for your studio.

No need. He's got it covered with MODX. It's like the decision if you should get your favorite album on CD or vinyl. Pretty much the same. In unusual situations, with super expensive gear to go with it, one could be a tad better than the other. And the most expensive option, which for most people in how they use it would still sound roughly the same, it also has portability issues too. MODX is the easy choice for most people. Some can't deal with the keybed, but it's largely blown out of proportion. But I'd advice to try both. Plus us MODX owners can MIDI up to whatever we want, and get the same digital USB audio in the studio too.

10:38 Why does it feel like the bassline in your left hand is a tad bit late when you play? Pianos on the Yamaha are really good, and although I love the Rhodes on the Yamaha, the Korg seems to be the closest to the real Rhodes (the DI sound without an amp). Interesting that the organ on the Yamaha is playable against the CX engine on the Korg.

I doubt the Korg Rhodes would be as good as the often "free" Chick Corea Rhodes sample collection put out by Yamaha avaiable for the MODX & Montage. Compare that Rhodes to the ones in the Nautilus, and I doubt there would be a contest. Although I feel the organs are weak on both the MODX, it is surprising how bad that CX engine is on the Kronos which is also included on the Nautilus vs other organ modeling engines in other synths. It's been discussed in Kronos groups & organ groups. Not a lot of love for that CX engine. The best organs I've heard on the Kronos are from the Organimation collection, and best I can tell it sounds identical on the MODX. (but does have the disadvantage of needing to load user samples in ram on the MODX which the Kronos version doesn't need to do). But with the MODX, you can load the Montage Organimation collection. With the Nautilus, you can't load the Organimation collection for Kronos, so MODX would likely win that contest.

@@n8goulet I don't know why I often forget about the Chick Corea Rhodes, and after listening to them, they sound really good, quite pristine. I gravitated towards the Korg because of its rawness and my mind had already applied the effects to them. I've been trying to give every reason to stay away from the Yamaha, but with every video, it becomes a more compelling option. I am curious for what Roland has in the future and if they are going to do anything to their FA line. Yamaha is really on top of their game with the MODX, the piano demo towards the end was something else, unless it was EQ'ed and has effects. That's interesting, I thought the CX engine was something, but you are right, people seem to dislike it especially compared to the Nord. So with that said, Nautilius although powerful is a big miss from Korg? I dunno.

@@tonylancer7367 I gravitated towards Korg for many years. But I learned, it's best not to pick a favorite brand or to be loyal to only one brand with synths. I had other synths before my Korg M1 when they came out, but they really changed the world with the M1. I own or have owned synths from Korg, Yamaha, Roland, ARP and others. Software from Moog, Roland, Korg, etc. Which brand is best like most companies is going to flip flop many times over the years. And if you use more than one synth, consider having a few different brands instead of just trusting one. I tend to think I'll be buying a new Korg model keyboard again some day, but right now, Yamaha is the clear winner for what's offered right now. I've tried the Roland FA series (every factory patch) and I was not too impressed. Many of the sounds seemed "watered down" from similar Roland sounds I've used. If you read countless reviews as I have, the MODX is the clear winner. One area where Roland & Korg are doing a decent job is software synths. Yamaha hasn't even really entered the game. Korg makes many of their digital classics in software (which are great), and ironically, not in hardware synth engines. Roland has gone even further! They have offered basically the same technology in their flagship synths, available in software "at the same time". Korg seems to wait until they've moved on for years away from a technology, where as Roland offered the same technology in their System 8 as software, only even more options for software. And with their Jupiter 8 & Fantom, they offer the Zen technology plus the ACB technology synths in software, covering most of their classics even further than the hardware. Plus the new Zen engines, their latest, are compatible with sound patches between the software versions or the hardware version. So if you were looking at the Jupiter X, you could go the software route and even exchange sounds. They haven't yet released "super natural" sounds of the Fantom in software, but they likely will soon.

@@n8goulet I think Roland are looking for a one system future where all the synths have something in common that they share. It's quite difficult to do because you need to provide a base and create all these features for something that could be expired by NAMM 2022 for example. I think they have something, and I'm curious to see what they have for the future. Ed Diaz keeps saying that he is excited about the future, and I guess we should be too. For me being a young synth head, I think having a Roland synth that covers all the classic Roland sounds will keep me away from them until I've learnt how to make those sounds and require a more complex palette. I mean I've told myself to stay away from stuff like ASM Hydrasynth, or the new Waldorf stuff because I would just play patches and do it no justice. 😅 I hope that Yamaha has a game plan to respond to plugins, I still believe in hardware synths, but hybrid systems like Roland might overshadow if done properly. I do believe in Korg, my favourite musicians play them (Greg Phillinganes being one), but they haven't struck me with lightning, they almost did with the Kronos. In fact, I almost gave out on the MODX when I saw the Nautilus on paper, and after reviews, run away from it, it didn't do enough. Yamaha is the clear winner. It's always good to have someone who is more knowledgeable than you when talking synths. 😁

Great series Woody. Amazing job. IMO, as an Arranger Keyboard, Nautilus was superior to MODX is overall sound. Classical sounds/songs sounded great to me on the Nautilus. @3:36 the VH Jump ditty sounded silly with vibrato on the MODX. Also, overall the MODX accompaniment sounded sequenced, and Nautilus accompaniment sounded more life-like. I did love the organ sound of the MODX @9:00, and the mix sounded like a '90s Cool Jazz mix. @10:31 the Nautilus cool max mix was just 'mo real. Nautilus comes with a Jungle - Drum&Bass arrangement? MODX Atmospheric House track sounded good. That seams like a good enough reason to decide on. If you are into Jungle buy Nautilus. Atmosphere House your thing? Yamaha has you covered. Ha, #TheRealBook guest appearance!

You opinion on which sounded better over all differs greatly from the majority of people that have commented about Woody's video. Take notice of all the other comments. But with the MODX, several different "better" patches exist to cover "Jump" if you wanted to. With the Nautilus, since it can't important any formats other than it's own (not sure about DX7 sysex import however), your likely not going to find many alternatives from what it comes with. Van Halen was a huge influence to me as a keyboard player by the way. One of my favorites. It burns me that people talk about his guitar playing, and some history pages don't even mention that he played keyboards first, won keyboard competitions and received classical training, where as on guitar by comparison, he never had any training. He was one serious keyboard player. I was fortunate to see him 3 times, each time with a different lead singers in concert. I've learned pretty much, all of the popular VH keyboard material put out.

No doudt anymore.Korg as the best sequencer of all.Professonal.

Why Kong didn’t include slider controls is beyond me.

It'd be nice if Korg made the Italian Grand available for free to us Kronos users...considering both the German & Japanese pianos are sh...er...so-so.

Nice demo… the Korg just blows the Yamaha completely out of the water with the super rich and clean sound, it’s unreal how huge the difference is…. The Yamaha sounds like a toy to me and the 8 other people in the room… Both through a JBL PA and the studio monitors…

the sounds of nautilus are not exciting in any case I did not understand where to place this workstation the price of the instrument is too high for the ambitions that korg sets itself in any case the comparison with MODX is in favor of yamaha, despite having a decidedly more price bass. The korg nautilus turns out an upgrade of krome can never be the new kronos kronos is from another planet i was wondering if you know any news about the real korg flagship

The nautilus is pretty much the same sound architecture and engines as the Kronos, but different sound sets.

People going ermegawd it sounds fake, because the name doesn't say kronos on it. just flip all the videos to kronos and people would suddenly be saying the opposite. It's not pretty much the same engine as the kronos, it's literally the same thing. Some samples are new thats it.

if you want to laugh, but nautilus has a touch without dynamics and the cost for an instrument with these characteristics is too high. the sounds it is true depend a lot on who records them obviously the author of the video does not have adequate equipment to make videos of this type

@@ignaziozichittella3109 How can you have inadequate equipment when both keyboards output sound on USB directly to the recording computer. No need for amps, mic’s, etc. The Yamaha can even act as a very good audio interface if you happen to want to record the 1/4” outputs of both and don’t have an interface. Basically you need an iPad or a 10 year old laptop and you can record these.

I have a modx but I feel the combination with the plastic body and lousy keybed makes this fake sounding overal.Just in my perception. I think it will be very similar with the Kronos VS Nautilus discussion (eventhough Woody says the keybed of the nautilus is more premium than the Modx

This just goes to show how Yamaha never moved on. It's not that MODX isn't capable, it's just that clearly Yamaha employs people stuck in the 80's and 90's. Their ethnic sounds really need to be updated and some ethnic pads and rhythms need to be added. The European and American demographics have changed dramatically in the past 20 years, but Yamaha is still catering exclusively to the disco and techno crowd.

I dont like how arp heavy these demos have been. I may be the minority here but I dont use them at all. I'm prefer a straight, side by side patch comparison.

not feasible to do that, with hundreds of different instruments, dozens of variations on each instrument, and combined about 5000 patches, and riffs to demonstrate them all, I'd be slaving away for weeks :D my thinking was that at least the combi performances demonstrate lots of sounds at once.

@@WoodyPianoShack Not all, obviously. I'm a little confused by that response. You did a couple videos with the MODX sounds by themselves. Countless people do videos showing select patches, as well as direct comparisons. I'm not sure why you'd assume you'd have to do every last one of them. The combis don't really showcase many sounds at once. They just showcase combis. You dont really get a sense of the quality of the individual sounds. Just my two cents.

@@lcceo22 exactly, other videos showcase individual patches, and then Woody shows off how those patches fit together into mixes, which these keyboards are made for, and does it better than other videos that show that Woody did quite well. These performances aren't even all that complex anyway, so the quality comes through clearly on good monitors.

I don't need you to explain things that are readily evident, but thanks anyways, I guess🤣 Further, Woody then went on to make the exact sort of video I asked about. And just as I expressed my dissatisfaction with this one, I expressed both my satisfaction and gratitude for that one.

The Yamaha modx has thousands of arpeggios and great sequencer on board. You are not doing justice for the modx. Yamaha patches are top notch. Roland and Korg will never come close. I'm totally offended with your KORGY attitude. I own Yamaha modx. It's even unbelievably better when daw comes to the scene. During 80s and early 90s Yamaha DX7 dominated the world music industry ever since 1983. In 2020 it lives inside the montage and modx along side Yamaha AWM2 and digital fx processors.

Woody owns keyboards from both companies actually, and Yamaha not only sent him a MODX but let him keep it too, which he seems to enjoy in the various videos on it. Yamaha ruled in the DX7 era during the 80s. Korg ruled the end of the 80s through most of the 90s with the M1 and similar spin offs. Yamaha returned to the game with MOTIF series, which I believe were the best selling synths of the 2000s more than the Triton series, but I'd like to see the actual numbers. The Korg M1 was the best selling synth of all time, but leaps & bounds. So Yamaha did not rule during that era. Not even with the SX77. I suspect the MODX will over take the title from Korg of best selling synth of all time due to a lot of power, in a very light weight package, at an incredible price.

If u buy 88 keys korg nautilus in New York they want 2600 plus tax and 1800 for the Yamaha modx

Such a poor sound for the money that is asked for him

The Modx in this video sounds and looks just like it does in real life. Plastic. I have the modx7 for over a year now. I cannot relate with it's sound. It just doesn't cut it for me. Listen to the rhodes at the end of the video. It's plastic. Just like the keyboard. The Nautilus can't convince me either to be honest (the rhodes sound was a little better. Does anybody use these arranger-like features to play music? Sorry I'm a live musician. I would much rather like usable sounds then 2000 beats and fake guitar riffs. For me the bad part of the modx is the sound in combination with the lousy keyboard. Using a better keyboard does help a bit. But still everything has this overproduced sheen which I apparently don't seem to like. Others do, which is good of course. It's a personal taste. Big plus for doing demo's though. Keep on the good work! This helps a lot to convince or not.

Simple solution. Download Yamaha's free Chick Corea Rhode collection for your MODX. Sometimes it's offered free, sometimes it's not. So keep your eyes open when it may be free again or not. Unsure about right now, could be free again. Yamaha painstakingly sampled his Rhodes. The collection is so good, he's said to use the Yamaha instead often at shows. Be warned that these samples are huge, and it will take up much of your 1 gig of user ram. But if an awesome Rhodes is that important, by all means get it. Other collections with smaller but good samples are available too. I'm perfectly happy with the onboard ones, so even though I downloaded the collection for free, I haven't tried it as I can't spare that much ram for it. But if I were that serious about Rhodes, you bet I'd install it. I'm sure this will blow away whatever Rhodes are available for most other keyboards.

@@n8goulet Thanks will check it out. I have a Nord stage 3 wich i use for piano's and rhodes. But wanted the modx as a very good 2nd tier keyboard that has a different sound but still is as good as the Nord in the sound departement. (since it's a Montage sound engine, I thought it would do) But now I think I should have gone for a Montage or maybe Nord Wave 2. Ah too many choices, right ;-)

@@demarketinggroep4198 I've had both the Montage & MODX connected to the same keyboard amp and could not hear a difference in the sounds I tried. One one sound I heard a difference, and as soon as I tweaked the volume on an element on the MODX, it sounded the same. Adjusting the velocity could also make a difference. Personally, I have no complaints with the MODX keybed. But that's for what I do. I love that the keyboard is less than half the weight, less than half the price and barely a difference in the sound. But always best to try before you buy.
