Korg MS-20 🦖 Old Korg 35 vs New OTA Filters & rumoured “noise leak”

Do you have a "noise leak" in your MS-20? Well, it is probably just the sound of the filter. We will look at where the noise is coming from and also listen to the difference between the older Korg 35 filter and newer OTA filter.

    I bought my MS-20 FS used and thought it was broken. This was very helpful. Thank you!

    When you did that first highpass sweep I thought we were heading into Glenn Frey's The Heat Is On. Great explanation of this noise. Folks now know that its the old filter that does it. People say that its great not having the noise with the new filter but others say the old 35 filter is more aggressive.

    Thanks! When I first got the synth, I was thinking it was an issue. But after really learning the circuit, having the noise in the 35 is a great alternative to a more clean sounding filter. It has a totally different sound.

    @@ToddUrban It's a generalisation but some of the vintage-style stuff is noisy but they do have their charm!

    @@ToddUrban Correct me, if I´m wrong, but from an electrician´s standpoint, I think it´s gonna be impossible, we would ever get a filter, where we couldn´t hear any sound at all anymore? (I mean, with the stuff you do with the hp and lp filters) Maybe? Maybe not detectable with the human ear?....

    @@chanceneck8072 well, true.... to some extent, I would assume all filters have some inherent noise. However, the noise in the MS-20's K35s is significant and very audible. And on the contrary, the OTA is fairly quiet. But event more substantial than just the noise, the sound of the filters really creates a totally different sounding synth.

    Hi there! Can i ask you something? Can i do the same trick to remove the noise in my Korg Ms20 mini????

  • @ToddUrban

    @ToddUrban

    I believe the mini also has both filter types. Check the manual and see if you can switch. If so, that should do it for you! Some people said that the mini still has some noise leftover. But I have not confirmed this since I only have a full size

    This "noise" sound may be the filter at work but my MS20 mini DOES have an oscillator leak. I can hear it when I turn down both Oscs, filter cutoffs and res's. Sounds like a saw. Faint. Doesn't change with waveform selector. But is playable on the keyboard, it changes according to pitch, scale, EG1 and MG. Any thoughts? Thanks

    Maybe it is different on the mini then! On the FS, it is just the sound of the filter being noisy, rather than the noise Osc “leaking” in.

    @@ToddUrban ok thanks replying. I may swap to the FS if you can switch between the filters like that. For me, the old filter noise is only problematic for certain uses.

    Strange, my MS-20 mini don't have this oscillator leak. It is exactly the same behaviour of the MS-20 FS .

  • @ToddUrban

    @ToddUrban

    Well, the point is that there isn’t a leak. It is actually the sound of the filter. That is the way it is supposed to perform

    @@mbrande Thanks for the comment. I never did a mini/FS side by side comparison. It would be interesting to give that a shot at some point to hear if there are differences. :)
