The pinching the toe of a shoe is not just an Asian thing, my parents used to do it because they wanted to make sure they were buying something we could grow into, not out of.

Things that my Irish/Romanian living in the UK self totally understands: Never wanting to eat the last of something (might just be me but i feel this weird guilt if I do) The shoe pinch. ("plenty of room to grow into them") moreso with school shoes. Feeling my forehead for a temperature if i claimed to be ill (I used to try and rub something against my head to make it feel hotter xD) but definitely times they are wrong, and doctors use the ear temperature Learning dance/instruments. Ok this is more specific maybe to my family, but one of my grandparents was a ballerina, so I was took to dance lessons when I was young (but not for long because i didn't like the other kids because autism at that age xD) and I was encouraged to learn an instrument, but I was glad to. Music is a good escape x3 IF SOMEONE COMES INTO MY HOUSE WEARING THEIR OUTSIDE SHOES PAST THE DOORWAY THEY ARE GETTING MURDERED. I SWEAR. But this sentiment is actually pretty common across Europe. xP (well, maybe not so violent, but I'd say its preferable people don't wear outdoor shoes around the house here)

I find the last meme so interesting, because cultures seem to crash at this point. I can understand the ‘take off’ party, it’s your house, a clean place… and actually it has a history in a lot of (non-asian) countires. But here at us taking off your shoes is just as unacceptable! Like I didn’t invite you to my house to humiliate you by making you take off your shoes… You are a guest, you have my highest respect, you should be comfortable. Of course it means that we ourselves are dressed up prettily and wear streetshoes as well, even though normally we wear slippers/socks. It’s fun to see different opinions. :)

Not eating the last piece is a bad tradition, because it's nothing else than wasting food. The tradition should be to offer the last piece to everyone else and if no one takes it, you can have it. Chefs put a lot of love in their dishes. Honor them by eating up. If you want to have more, the Chef will know that you liked it a lot.

Grew up in the US on a farm so I relate to most of these as well. We also had a masculinity so my dad didnt like the idea of joining and dancing, or bands since it wasnt manly. We worked horses, built fences, bailed hay, raised a big garden, and did horse shows to sell horses. It reminds me of kdramas with a whole family working really hard to run a buisness. I learned guitar watching my dad and his friends after they lost playing poker. Then I started learning poker as well to get spending money.

I feel like American kids grew up taking TV shows too seriously, or there was a lack of proper parenting or something. As a kid if my shoes were on already I was told to "stay on the mat". In American TV shows people always wore complete outfits, including shoes, inside the house. Having grown up in Canada, even though we watched a lot of the same shows growing up, I would NEVER walk through the house with my shoes on! If I wear any sort of slippers or flip flops inside the house they are for inside the house ONLY and they stay on the floor only. I could never imagine wearing any footwear on my bed. 😫 Yuck.

Yumi needs to travel outside of Korea and see the world more if she thinks most of these things are common outside of Asia, and are surprised they aren't. 😅They're definitely not the norm in most of western Europe. That said, not wearing shoes indoors is the norm in most of the world. There are some places where it's not though, such as in various parts of the US. I've heard so many Americans argue back and forth on whether it's normal or not though, so I think it varies a lot by state/city/area in the US, but what I find so odd is that both sides seems to think their way is fundamentally and obviously the normal and more common practice, and are shocked when other Americans contradict them lol. I also found wearing shoes inside to be a thing in some homes (but not others) when I spent 5 months living in York, in the UK, so I dunno lol. Maybe it's an English speaking countries thing? *shrug*

As a black American, I can assure you that we don't wear shoes on our beds. I was raised to take off my shoes before going upstairs and walking around my house. There is difference in culture in America depending upon the ethnicity of the American. Black Americans are different from white Americans who are different from Hispanic Americans etc. We might have the same nationality, but we follow different cultures. I hope you understand that!

I think the shoes in the house thing is overblown in the US. If you were raised with any form of manners, at a minimum you asked if shoes were to be removed. You can often tell when visiting someone’s house if they are a shoes off family because there will be shoes already left at the door. I was raised in a house where you removed your shoes. So it’s just natural to remove my shoes when entering a house. Wall to wall carpeting was a trend more in Western countries than in Asian countries. It would seem logical that Western people would be as cognizant of tracking dirt into a house as any other culture. No one likes to have carpets cleaned. Western culture has gone away from carpet now because it is so hard to keep clean. The first thing I did when I purchased my house was to remove all the carpets and install solid surface flooring. If I am just popping into the house to grab something real quick I may not remove my shoes but if I’m staying for a significant amount of time I do. It also depends on the weather. If it’s raining, snowing or muddy outside of course you take your shoes off. I don’t think removing shoes is as culturally engrained in Western culture as it is in Asian culture but it far less common to wear shoes in a private house than may be portrayed in our media. The biggest difference may be in public settings. It is culturally inappropriate to remove your shoes in public in Western cultures more than it may be in Asian cultures. I’ve seen videos from Asian cultures where patrons are expected to remove shoes and are provided slippers or something similar to wear while in the public establishment. That would be exceedingly rare to find in Western culture.

Hopefully the younger generation in Korea today will change this over time.

It's so weird how Koreans react so strongly to seeing shoes in the house. Turns out...we Americans know our carpets are old and we don't care if they get dirty. We have vacuums and carpet shampooers for a reason 😂 What's insulting is when you come into a house and you are told to take your shoes off, especially if there are no nice carpets or if they only have hardwood floors. We don't have heated floors, so making me take off my shoes when the floors are freezing is really inconsiderate. Are we supposed to bring thick socks and comfy slippers to other people's houses? Just face it...our cultures are different 😂
