Korean Navy Boot Camp Day 2: “The hardest thing I’ve ever done”

Комедия

Today we start the day at 5am. After the morning workout, the boys are thrown straight into the deep-end, to do "basic training", which, to us seemed more than "basic". Several of the boys described the day as the "hardest day of their lives'" and they each had different reasons for it. How did the boys cope with the physical, psychological challenge? Are they ready for what's to come next?

i think people might not notice it, but the guy who is translating is doing twice the work compared to everyone else. Your brain becomes numb after this much of vigorous training, but he still kept it all together and translated everything. As an interpreter myself, i know how much it takes a toll on your brain to continuously translate, and he did it in these conditions was amazing. Hats off to everyone.

you know, i legitimately assumed that the translator would be just like standing next to them shouting out the commands in English for them. imagine my shock when i realised it was Hong, a fellow recruit, having to go through the process with them (and getting punished together with them!) that had been saddled with the task of translation. hope the KE team compensated him for his efforts (like a nice meal at the very least).

Man, I deadass started crying when the interpreter screamed his lungs out for the military song. I mean, he was definitely stressed out! He had to interpret everything while doing twice as much work than what he used to do as he had to keep redoing everything with the Englishmen. This is the first time I got annoyed when one of them started to goof around, like c’mon, it’s not that hard to be serious for one sec 😔 but my mood instantly got lift up when Harvey gave the interpreter a compliment. Everybody else should’ve acknowledged his hardwork more! 😭

I actually got teary eyed when the translator trainee was begging all of the guys to stop laughing. Those 2 Koreans didn’t deserve the punishment. I like what Jayden said that smiling is not really the problem. They are not there to have fun. You can see Nati taking this seriously. I’m really proud of Harvey! He’s really the star of this series!

@acoeurlacouture Armand is a good young man who just needs to mature. He is the least athletic one of the group, so it's understandable. I too thought his comment about smiling was the least of their problems but he must have lost his mind after that training and didn't know how stupid that sounded. He will realize a few years later when he sees it again.

Boot camp is hard enough in your native language, I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to have to follow directions in a language you don’t understand. I think the boys have been great. They’re still young. Maybe if they would have been really prepared and known what they were really getting into before they were brought to Korea they would have been able to deal with the situation in a different manner. It’s as if you are put to take a very important and serious exam, but you were never prepared for it.

i’m looking forward to see how armand develops, i know people in the comments are being highly critical of his behaviour, but i also see this as an opportunity for a bit of self-reflection and growth. harvey has displayed such an exemplary behaviour along with nati, and it’s so easy to sing praises for the both of them. but i’m most curious to see how armand’s attitude will be like in the next following episodes - depending on how he chooses to act, i think we’ll see the most drastic of changes in him (if all goes right *cross fingers*). rooting for everyone as well, i cannot imagine the level of stress and pressure they must have been in while filming this!

I am seriously appreciating Harvey’s attitude. Don’t get me wrong, everybody is doing amazing enduring the mental and physical toll; every one has the right to feel distressed, annoyed, and resistant to all of this cause it’s genuinely challenging. But Harvey just looks like he’s taking it in stride by staying resilient and appreciative of those around him. It really gives respect to not just his fellow recruits but all Korean men who bear this responsibility

Coming from an immigrant family, I am so used to translating things for my family and still inevitably get mad and annoyed. (Maybe I'm just impatient, felt like you're always doing a double job) But he remained very calm the entire time and gave encouragement to the boys. During the song singing session, maybe it's just the mic or what. I felt like he was giving it his all because his teammates weren't able to sing the song and he's trying to use his voice to make up for it.

Arman? Armani? this guy should be trained by a legit DI from 5-8 years ago (this DI is like 1 out 10 of scariness in Korean armed forces) the time before a previous extreme liberal president changed Korean army's atmosphere as 'Army academy', 'Army pre school' instead of a legit army training camp. Then I can guarantee that he won't laugh at all whole time. We are facing freaking N.Korea on our border line, and we shouldn't make them just chill during the service. We need that scariness, and fear in the armed forces definitely. Am I conservative? No, I'm right in the middle (moderate), and I believe in yin and yang (everything should be balanced in right times). But the fear, discipline, and seniority are required in the armed forces imo.

The new things i notice in this series are: - Jayden is cool and i think he just like go with it - nati kept telling the others about better position during the log thing and make sure the whole group gets it - harvey is very supportive, he also continuously praise the translator, the little gesture of him really appreciating people around him eventho i know it must be a difficult situation for the boys.

It used to be, but now it's changed to 18 months in the military The military service period was shortened by three months, the same for each military. This was a pretty intense viewing experience. So well done, KE team! And the interpreter, and the boys, well done too. It's hard to believe no one gave up. Situations like these are basically designed to at the very least bring anyone and everyone to the very edge of giving up, but no one took the bait. You young men are something to be proud of! Also actually the two much older men who still staggered through. You don't know how much harder it is when you get older until you get older. Because even if you can do things, you feel it far harder the next day than young people, and take far longer to restore your body and just your mere energy level. Everyone involved really did give it their all, and that's wonderful to see!

I don’t think many realize that not understanding the Korean around them immensely adds to the mental toll. Not knowing the reprimanding, the instructions, the commands, the call and response protocol. The translators do their best but as someone who needs context and clarity to fuel my motivation, I just can’t imagine how hard it must be to process everything real time, with the added threat of punishment if you don’t do things correctly or immediately
