I'm a very old French lady. I've been learning Korean by myself for 18 months now and it's very challenging . I live in a small town and I will never have the chance to meet Korean people to talk with them but learning Korean is very interesting. I try to break sentences of songs that I like to be able to understans them and sing along. Now I am able to understand some sentences when I watch K dramas but I don't think I will ever be able to fully undertans without the subtitles. But I will try to use the advices you gave us in your videos. Writing a diary will be helpfull, no doubt. So , thank you a lot.

Improving - just slower at 66 years of age - but I won't be giving up!!

​@@sueyap3078What motivates me at 36 is being able to understand Korean movies. When you learn a new language you learn new ways of thinking about things and thinking about life. I lived in Japan for 3 years and it completely changed the way I saw the world.

I'm intermediate too and I find listening so hard. Like I hear it and can't pick up what's being said sometimes, but when I see it written down I understand everything 😭 but I could understand this so that's a plus

I really liked this video and the fact that you provided the Korean subtitles along with it made it easy for me to read along. In fact, I decided to challenge myself and put the video on 1.5 speed and thanks to the subtitles I was able to catch everything 😊 So yeah, these kinds of videos are great and I can only agree with the other commenters. Hope you consider uploading more content like this ❤

I listened without subtitles and read along with the Korean as practice. I feel like I understood maybe... 65-70%(?) but I'm really proud of myself for it. I had started to become frustrated at my pace and feeling like I wasn't learning fast enough, but it's really good advice and comfort.

All my new vocabulary words I list in sentences but they are other people's sentences. It never occurred to me to also write my own sentences which would help me memorize them better and help with my speaking. Thankyou for this video I find the speed easy for listening to, I can recognize words with my limited vocabulary while gaining familiarity with the rhythm of speech. I also appreciate the gentleness of this presentation.

Thanks for the video! I've been learning Korean for half a year now, but my biggest problem is still listening^^ I'm German so talking is fine as well as writing, but if I listen to Korean I can never understand without subtitles. But it's also hard to practice with movies and stuff, cause the subtitles always differ from what's really said.

I loved this vid. Please make more like this!!

My way of memorising words changed throughout the time. At first I just used anki and made countless flashcards of single words and translations on the other side. After getting to around 3000 cards learned I started making sentence flashcards. I'd pick a sentence with max 2 unknown words. highlight them and on the other side I'd just put the translations of new words but not the whole sentence. I think I can memorise the words better in context like this but I think we need to have agood base of words to do this, otherwise every words in an unknown word :)

I've seen many videos saying the same thing: "just keep learning, even if you make mistakes along the way" but for some reason, this video made me believe it after my brain couldn't accept it for a long time. To be honest, I find journaling in general and even in a language I'm comfortable with is already tedious work to me, maybe because I'm an impatient person with a short attention span so I hope I can just give this a try,

thanks Yeji! thanks TTMIK! i really love this format. For me, I struggle with hearing. It is almost impossible for me to understand most of the time because it is either too fast or I couldn't make sense of the words. With this format, it allows me to hear at a good pace and read at the same time!

One thing I'd like to hear more on is what you talk to yourself about in your target language. You mentioned you used to speak to yourself for an hour in English in the morning, so I'm curious about the topics you used to cover. I find it difficult to avoid having the same conversations with myself each day, or choosing a topic that's too difficult for my level and getting disheartened then not talking again for months on end.

This video is excellent, would love to see more of these, even if the actual content isn't about helpful studying tips, but just random topics being talked about to help practice listening with everything subtitled and easy to check afterwards. The sentence making strategy is also what I try to do when I can when studying, but do others struggle with coming up with sentences to write? Even in English I can't think of a sentence to write for the vocab words to then try to say in Korean. I never know if this is just me completely lacking in creativity skills (lol) or if it's my own difficulty in trying to translate or what. But it makes me not want to take time making sentences with vocab words because it'll take like 10-15 minutes just to come up with a few sentences to say. And then if I try to do it quicker I just find myself saying very similar simple things that I feel don't necessarily help me that much. Anyone else have this kind of problem or know a way around it to help make it easier to come up with sentences to write?

ASMR ❤ Thank you for the great video, I've been waiting (patiently) for more intermediate-based content from the TTMIK team now that Bimbimchat has stopped. There are so many beginner lessons out there it's nice to have something for us :) Really love this format too - 25 minutes of one person only talking in Korean about one topic in detail is brilliant. Moooore please :D Also, I have been writing up notes ONLY in Korean on new grammar points I learn/new words I come across and it's helped me a lot. I also add my own sample sentences to the write-up which is helpful. Sometimes I don't fancy writing about my day in Korean, so this helps me get the writing practice in without having to write about work, etc. haha.

Wow! Your Korean is excellent!

Interesting. I thought most people would struggle with input as that is what happened to me. I started speaking very early on but my listening always sucked. To this day I have troubles understanding spoken Korean and I do much better with reading the korean subs. I can normally speak quite well (at least about the topics that I had a lot of exposure to) but understanind what people are saying to me is quite difficult. I think that is due to reading a lot of webtoons and texting, while I had very little listening practice. I'd watch dramas and just read english subs so yeah.. Wish to change

Not really. For most people speaking is the hardest part of any language. It's harder because you have to think of vocabulary and grammar at the same time and then actively USE it. It's easier to recognise words and patterns when listening.

I teach in Korea. I have found that for my Korean students, speaking is usually much more difficult than listening. And for me personally, learning Korean, listening is by far the most difficult. In my professional opinion (I'm a University qualified second language teacher), that's basically it. For most Korean people, speaking is much more difficult than listening because English has more variation of phonetic sound to listen to, but more difficult to pronounce, and English sentence construction is VERY difficult compared to Korean, particularly for beginners (see pronoun-verb agreements and plural usage), and English sentences all start completely differently depending upon what you want to say. English sentence structure is very rigid with huge variation. Korean sentences are much more predictable, and generally mostly follow a basic stable pattern, particularly for beginners. Korean listening is MUCH more difficult than speaking for similar reasons. The Korean sentence structures, particularly for beginners, are quite easy. BUT the phonic sounds are much, MUCH closer together than English, and listening to Korean is like listening to a constantly changing ocean in a storm for English speakers, particularly at the beginning - we have to learn dictionary words to start with that we will never even hear spoken, but we MUST know those very well indeed in order to navigate through conjugations, the rules for which we need to know very, VERY well in order to differentiate conjugations of a lot of similar words. Then we have to learn to listen to those on a constant changing basis where sounds constantly change or are removed altogether, and for which many nuances are added to the structure. That's very difficult for English speakers who expect all individual words to STAY THE SAME like English words, lol! English has a little of that, with some contractions, but nothing like Korean. And as I mentioned above, the phonetic sounds in Korean are much, much closer together than in English - they're all bunched up together occupying similar spaces in the mouth, whereas English sounds are spread around the cavity space (high/low/back/front), (which I suspect also makes English speaking for Korean people more difficult - they have to navigate moving those sounds around much wider spaces.) Speaking was harder for this lady because English speaking is generally harder than listening. I've been teaching in Korea for 5 years and I haven't found a single student who found listening anywhere near as difficult as speaking. My students can listen and understand their learned English, but very few of them are able to make up their own sentences, and even then if they do (very rare), usually with little change from the initial learned basic expression, even though I teach the grammar behind it and the verb agreement rules. They can understand it, but they can't speak it. Korean listening is harder for most English speakers than Korean speaking, for the reasons stated above.

This is exactly my case. I somewhat can always express what I want in korean, so speaking is not hard for me at all, but I still struggle a lot with listening. Simply spoken korean is still too fast for my ears :(

@@gtmarze Yes, I am similar. I can express most of what I want to say, but listening is very difficult, the speed coupled misinterpretation of similar words at speed (and the time my brain needs to sort those out - often de-conjugating in my head - which similar word was said, by which time the conversation has moved on!), particularly when diction isn't good. Korean listening is much more difficult than Korean speaking, particularly in an area heavy with non-Seoul 사투리, which mostly completely looses me.

@@fransmith3255 I live in Busan so I can totally relate to the struggle of non-Seoul 사투리 ㅜㅜㅜ. The times i've gone to Seoul I felt their accent a bit easier to understand than 경상.

제가 거의 2년 동안 한국어를 공부하고 있는 데 왜 아직 원어민들처럼 자연스러운 그런 대화 못 할 까 싶어서 고민했어요. 그런데 아주 큰 실수가 잇었더라고요. 그게 바로 연습을 안 하는 거죠. 그래서 개학했을 때 한국어 공부할 시간도 꽤 없어서 결국 열심히 외운 단어 다 까먹었어요. 그래서 한국어 공부하는 방법 바꿨어요.이제 일기도 쓰고 새로운 단어를 배울 때 꼭 문장을 구조하려고 해요. 그리고 혼잣말도 하고 있어요. 지금 아직도 서투르지만 편하게 한국어로 제 마음을 표현할 수 있어서 너무 뿌듯해요. 항상 도움이 되는 영상 만들어주셔서 너무 감사드립니다. 앞으로도 화이팅!!!
