    I'm no expert on Korean culture, but from my experiences let me put it into perspective as best I can for someone not used to it... In dramas/shows: Anything that would cut someone is blurred. For example, a show I watched had a bunch of kitchen knives on the wall and one was blurred. I knew which knife the guy was gonna grab at least. Severe gore is also blurred. Hence why they were uncomfortable with the stabbing and blood. In music: Their broadcasting laws are sensitive about rating music videos and even don't allow songs with cursing or brand names to be on the air. General Public: Guns are not used outside of the military really so it's rare for a normal citizen to have a gun on them - another reason they aren't comfortable with weapons probably. Drugs are also very VERY frowned upon and the public will turn on anybody who even used something that's common in the western market like marijuana. So yes. They were probably a bit shocked at the violence/cursing/ect. It's different from our own culture, but there's nothing wrong with it. Plus not every Korean is like this, anyways.

  • @tedwards1025

    @tedwards1025

    @@OfficialAwkbe There actually weren't any guns in these music videos but yeah that's the gist. Although I wouldn't go so far as to say "There's nothing wrong with it" when it comes to drugs since even drugs with proven medical benefit that you legally get in other places for medical conditions can make you a social pariah and ruin your career because of their draconian views on the substances (see cases of a Kpop idol getting her prescription for Adderall for her ADHD confiscated and having charges brought against her causing a huge scandal or other idols self-medicating with marijuana which is legal in other countries and has accepted medical uses in most of the developed world but being ostracized for it in South Korea). There's also a strange policy in South Korea where if you're a citizen abroad even if something is legal in another country and you do it there (like gambling at a casino in Monaco) you can be prosecuted in South Korea for doing so, even though you really didn't commit a crime. So their policies are a lot more complicated and morally ambiguous than you're making them out to be here. And this isn't a longstanding cultural feature either, this fear and hatred of drugs and criminalization of addiction rather than treating it as a medical condition is heavily influenced by the "War on Drugs" in recent decades which has led to more powerful blackmarkets for drugs and discourages people from getting medical help for substance use. This is a complicated issue.

    @@OfficialAwkbeThe k dramas and pop culture stuff is usually aired during prime time hours, so it's gotta have a strict PG rating among other things. Music videos, dramas and reality shows over there fall into that category. I think they were just caught off guard about the fact that violence and gore was in a music video, as it really doesn't happen over there. They are are accustomed to more mature themes in big blockbuster movies, probably why they keep referring to the videos as looking like movies or netflix shows. Look up critically acclaimed South Korean movies such as I Saw the Devil, Oldboy, Memories of Murder and The Chaser to name a few, the last even loosely based on a true story. All of them great movies, but as gory and violent/disturbing as they come. Even the recent Parasite to a small degree. The pop culture over there is just widely different from the western pop culture. Where we are more accustomed to lots of diversity, they tend to mostly follow an ideal mold. Be it a certain ideal appearance, reserved personalities, dress codes and stuff.

    They aren’t acting scared and aren’t being offensive. Actually, some of these comments are. Korean culture doesn’t allow tattoos, violence, gore to be on television or music. In Korea, even suggested violence or crime is blurred out or just not put in television or movies. It’s not something the depict. Their rappers don’t rap about drugs and killing people. In America, we have freedom of speech and can say almost anything we want but Korea is not so fortunate. So to them seeing songs that are so popular they have heard them in Korea being played with violence, blood and gore is shocking. They aren’t used to being able to see it.

    This video honestly made me upset😂 I wish they were more open minded and weren’t so sensitive to things. This is an artist telling a story through a music video and the whole time the girls were just like “ew, he’s gross” and hating on his features. They should focus more on the song or trying to understand the artists perspective on things instead of criticizing every little thing they didn’t like. That’s just my personal opinion of course and I think that people who are able to put themselves in other peoples shoes can grow a lot as a human; so to see such harsh criticism on something so amazing is definitely disappointing. Besides that I genuinely enjoy that you extend the genres or artist you react to which I think is nice. I enjoy watching your videos, but this can be something to practice or think about.

I know for you the visual is everything in a MV but sometimes, visuals don’t make sense if you don’t get the meaning (by listening or understanding). Us fans of an artist, we want to see what you think about the whole MV, not only your culture shock (that I totally get as you’re not used to it) when you see knife stab in a MV as in a show. Male reactions were understandably as they wanted to understand the song to put the concept together but female reactions... 🙄🙄

    I understand the inevitable "shock" slant but could we have an intro from the moderator of Y pictures to give context to where these reactors are coming from? This would allow us non-koreans to understand your culture and come out of this whole exercise enriched. Right now I am coming away with 5:49 "Not really using many instruments" when there's anywhere from 4-7 layers on sections of the track that I heard. I am not even going to touch the reactions on physical appearance. I clicked to watch a reaction on the music which was miniscule compared to the rest of the material. As we seemingly are expected to understand Korean culture could we expect the same be extended towards American culture and Post Malone artistry as well? Just from what I gathered these reactors were chosen since they didn't know Post Malone nor has little to no exposure to American music or at least to Post's discography? Is this supposed to be a man-on-the-street type?

    I am always amused by the people that are so excited that they keep talking and they miss every lyric or parts (that are symbolic) from the music videos then they don't know how to react or don't understand what is going on :))

    I'm Korean. When I saw their reactions, I thought their reactions were a bit strange. As a Korean, I apologize instead. I often listen to Post Malone and like it. Sorry for the weird translation because it's a translator.😭😭😭 ( I'm copying and pasting this.)
