Korean American OG reacts to Agust D 'AMYGDALA' Official MV [Reaction]

Музыка

One of the BEST I have heard and seen in the longest time. Substance, purpose, and composition were all there. Masterpiece. I LOVED IT. However, why is this an Adult Content? Sorry, I kinda ranted on the subject but it made me really mad.

oh. oh i get it. the ‘mad king’ with scars is the persona who’s still trapped in that dark room. no wonder yoongi keeps killing him in his MVs. it’s not just a political symbolism-it also signifies his endless pursuit of moving forward. of erasing his old scarred self to carry on

This is also reflected on Haegum. The gangsta yoongi/suga/agust D didnt have scar anymore like his two self on Daechwita (the mad king is his first scar get created that turn him to be mad and full of pain and anger (yoongi life events in the past). Then the "bottomclass" Yoongi who from the future (2020) killed his crazy past self (the mad king). But the scar is not heal yet, that why the bottomclass yoongi even he is from the future n killed the king(his mad past self), but he still have that scar. He might be not that mad and angry like before anymore, but the scar n pain it still there (he still cant set free from that pain) and it still controlling him. In Haegum, that bottomclass Yoongi become a head police, he may be success to kill the king but he still control yoongi. Yoongi cant be free from him (his pain/scar). Then,, as Yoongi said, he is not angry anymore n can forgive to all people who hurting him n made peace with himself, hence he will more focus to his present rather being hurt with his past or afraid in the future. He break his limit that is controlling him. That why the gangster Yoongi didnt have a scar like the mad king also the bottomclass suga (or now he is the head police). It's a symbolic that that scar is already heal now. And he ready to let go his past completely with killing the bottomclass suga/head police, as hisnlast string for his past scar that still lingering. He is the new haegum who finally free from his past self that full of scar.

Yoongi’s explanation to staff during that Amygdala MV meeting: “This is the story of my life, you know. Before I reached the age of 20, I'd already had a lot of things going on in my life. I really want to talk about how I got the scar over my eye in this song. n a way, we're responsible for all our own wounds and scars. No one can dodge the first arrow of trouble, of course, but when that second arrow flies at you, you've chosen to just stand there and get hit, rather than learn from the first time.”

Please note the split-second image of a hand holding almonds at 3:42. This is a reference to ALMOND: A NOVEL about a guy who has trouble identifying and describing experienced emotions because of a neuropsychologic condition (alexithymia). The "almond" refers to the amygdala, an almond-shaped area of the brain. Yoongi was seen reading this book in a preview to IN THE SOOP. The book is on Namjoon's recommended list.

Most likely he will live with those nightmares most of his life when the memories creep out again. He said in his documentary that working on Amygdala caused a lot of mood swings. So brave. Think they put that adult content warning because of the self harm plus prolly the medication he was taking “probably” for depression. But I’m with you, this is real life. Everyone should be exposed to this. The symbol of that scar was a revelation to me. I’ve always thought it was born of anger especially since we first saw it in Daechwita but it was more self inflected. Because of all the pain he had inside he inflected that scar on himself. 😭 I cried watching this. But even before I knew what he was saying I already cried…even without knowing the language u could feel the pain and sadness in the music. All the pain and suffering he must have gone through while training and being a BTS member. Sigh. It hurts my heart. I’m so thankful that he shares his personal feelings with us. I’m going to be a mess during the concert 😭 thank u for another great reaction vid 💜

Children shouldn't be exposed to that - makes for better grounded adults. Teens? Some can and some can't deal. It is a very indivudal question. But yes: the warning was for the self-harm. I'm happy that Min Yoongi is in a far more stable place now. He healed and forgave himself! 💜

@@ruthfischer7615 Well the fact is you simply cannot control what a child may or may not be exposed to. I'd much rather have them learn about it through a very controlled environment like a music video, where an adult can explain the situation in an understandable way for their age. Rather than the reality that tons of kids have to be exposed to these kinds of things through real life events that they're forced to cope with and endure. It's good for kids to know about these kinds of struggles in life so the stigma around struggling in general never has the chance to develop, which is ultimately what keeps many people from getting help when they do actually come to need it. You just have to know what level of exposure to give to a kid based on their age, whether they can handle things being more harsh or not.

@@AliceBunny05 If you sit next to the child and can explain? Perhaps I wasn't allowed to watch the "Action" TV shows of the 80s because I tended to get nightmares. Or at least at one time I had one. An elementary teacher brought more nightmares by telling us about people deing at a fire in public transport/train station. Like I said: some people/children can cope and some can't. Self harm is tricky. Some use it to give face to their inner pain: cutting. It can become addicting for those who do it and very tricky to get away from. The warning exists for a reason. And it can trigger people. I like those warnings because you can made an informed decision: can you or can't you cope. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 💜

Exactly, I really like the way you put it. I saw another reactor get annoyed at the warning and no offense but I find that stupid or at the very least insensitive 😕. Because it’s completely reasonable for them to take into account the fact that younger people or people who have experienced something similar could be negatively affected by some scenes. And whether it’s “completely reasonable” or not it’s very easy to understand why they would do that

The fact that Yoongi allows himself to be this candid, raw, and vulnerable in his artistic expression is a huge part of why he's so beloved. In fact, the same goes for BTS as a whole. This is what sets them singularly apart from everyone else.

Yes i kinda agree that younger people should see the real stuffs but it's a trigger warning which isn't unnecessary or smthing it's for everyone not only for kids it's just a warning that it can trigger ur own struggles which people don't wanna relive it has that disclaimer cause of traumatic experience and self harm which i m so glad they put it on cause for this mv it's freaking needed specially if u also have been thru that trauma in ur life or going thru it's very essential... This mv hits so hard firstly for those who knows yoongi all deep and everything bout him and for those (including me)who have thru the same experience or worse which is potrayed here bout self harm and depression i like cried and felt so uneasy at the first watch of this mv cause it was reviving my those memories too which i too don't wanna face again& again no.womder they had to put that disclaimer..it's like heartaching but also healing in kinda a way this man really has my whole heart 🥺💜💜

Courageously Min Yoongi has written "Amygdala" as Lady Gaga wrote "Til It Happens To You" both songs about the Pain OF Trauma and its lingering PTSD and despair. But I do not think Western music critics and listeners will appreciate his song as much. Few have any knowledge of Korean, indeed Asian music. Personally I love both and applaud both artists and both songs. The adult content label probably is because of his metaphoric scarring with an X-Acto knife. I guess in US at least one out of every four early teens have cut themselves. I know I have eight grandkids and 2 have been so depressed they cut themselves. Also his consumption of pain meds and maybe anti-depressants would have triggered the warning. Ruthless honesty is not done in the US. (Note how Lady Gaga says "it" happens, but does not say rape. ) If parents or older siblings watch this with their preteens or young teens it could be a moment to talk about Life 's unexpected catastrophes and how to deal with physical and emotional pain, with undeserved tragedy, and with Depression which can be situational. Viewing together and talking about these events in Yoongi''s early life could deepen a connection between young person and caring adult. Yoongi wants us to connect and to communicate. Thank Heavens for brave Yoongi.

Themselves put themselves down from the "celebrity podium" declaring that they are like us ,emotional and life like us or not different from us. With true struggles and fears but they also share with the world their ways to cope with all. Its brilliant and what the world(especially struggling people) really needs as you said to see and hear!

We never know what challenges people have faced and are facing. Songs like this make it plain for one person and make it easier to imagine what someone else might be carrying. It's so important. He has the line in Haegeum about your freedom taking someone's life, and it's in Ugh too. I don't think he ever stops worrying that other people will step over the edge because he knows what it's like. And yes, the timing... It would always hit hard but right now it's especially hard. I hope everyone can see this as a plea to understand and help people who are struggling.

He couldn't tell anyone about the accident and the pain afterwards because he was afraid to not be able to debut. And that wouid have been devastating since his parents were not supporting his dreams at the time, which is why he worked as a delivery boy at the same time as he was a full time trainee and also learned about music production. He barely slept. He often went without food and used the money he earned on bus tickets to BigHit. And now it makes sense that he hurt himself and tried to kill himself with pills. He has finally opened up and this is a sincere gift we can relate to. We all have different scars. I love the video. And the song.

I think you are mixing some stuff up. His parents were not happy with his choice because of what is happening in SK at the "moment". Look up "n-po generation" to understand what I mean. He worked as a delivery boy as the company had no money and he wanted to go to university - which eventually the label paid for. Yoongi began learning about music production far earlier than meeting BH. He worked - was that a radio station? a small label? a little studio? I don't quiet remember - before with little pay but also learning the basics in music production. So he actually produced songs before. There is one he made for the Gwangju uprising but it wasn't taken at that time. There is a timeframe - still before BH - where he tried to get his music out and people stole his work, but also 2 dollar meal or a ticket is from that time. And where did you hear that he tried to overdose? because that is new to me. He did take pain medicine for his injury from the car accident. He suffered from at least low-level pain constantly till his OP in 2020. There is "The Last"... it could mean he was asked about self-harm but the likely interpretation was always if he thought about s*. We are talking about the same "legend" that was always at the bottom of the trainee evaluation and still debuted. (Suchwita with TXT) Yes, he was afraid to be cut from the label and tried to keep silent. But his injury was noted fast because he couldn't dance with it - the ripped fiber (?) - and he felt guilty for deceiving them and tried to offer his resignation but they didn't let him, brought him to hospital and told him they would wait for him to heal. Here he makes his scar "visible" by cutting himself as we see in the shadow. This cut took a long time to heal. But it eventually did in Haegeum. I think having the members being there for him is part of that, too (always 6 members in his gang in both Daechwita and Haegeum). Borahae!

This endeth the trilogy. His former self killed his former self killed his former self. His current self has no scar but remember the scar. The scar on the face is figurative. His scars are real. Just can’t be seen. The accident in the scene that actually happened when he was a delivery boy to earn a living while making music or while being a trainee (?), I think that’s just ONE thing that went wrong. He never treated that shoulder until 2020. It create restrictions on his shoulder movements as it healed improperly but he didn’t want to lose his spot as a trainee. Can you imagine dancing BTS dances with a stuffed shoulder? In many ways that paralleled the unattended emotional wounds as well. At least until now. Making his own music seems to be very cathartic for him. Thank god for Bang and Big Hit for allowing these guys to express themselves OUTSIDE OF BTS. There were actually three Yoongi in the Amygdala MV. One was experiencing real-life events. The other wanted to save him from his pain. And the other was just watching and eating almonds. In the book of Amond, MC's mother had him eat almonds because she believed it would help him. It starts to rain towards the end of the video. Rain is a symbol of unhappiness BUT it is also a pause for introspection. That's why her self-analysis was the reason she couldn't escape her memories and kept spinning around.

Besides all of these personal issues, he and BTS were targets of endless nonsensical hate from everyone. An army side, this is why we are so angry with SK right now- government and media and other companies have all used BTS for their own gain and never once gave back to BTS. Meanwhile, rich kids can get a job for a company that qualifies them for exemption while their job isn’t even worthy of it (chip companies, etc). Not one person in public has batted an eye or stood up to say if anyone is bringing pride to SK it should be BTS that should be honored. @pennybleta2300 It is cultural. For the longest time, entertainers were called clowns. Kinda like Court jesters. Their social ranking was equal to the lowest of the low. Like executioners and butchers. There is still remnants of that in older generation. Second, Kpop started catering to middle school and high-school girls. And they were very immature due to tiger moms of SK. That stigma is still present. Third, not all people want depth in music. Look at world music. Most of it is garbage. Sex drugs, killing, and thuggery are the mainstay of the industry. It is market driven. That is the level of consumers and that makes money. Just reality. That is why group like BTS is so precious. It has garnere a fandomm of all ages from all around the world. Because there are still people who do not judge a book by its cover and what color or language they speak. So don't get mad, appreciate this moment in time and others who share your love. Don't worry about others. Concentrate on positive. "The first and second was so fictional but this is so personal." In some ways, it makes a lot of sense and even aligns with Yoongi's past way of storytelling. What I mean by this is, if you look at his first solo album, the songs begin bombastic, loud, rebellious, full of bravado. Gradually they get more and more raw and real until eventually you reach The Last and So Far Away. Likewise, Yoongi begins this trilogy by regaling us with grand tales of corrupt kings and rebel coups, with drug lords and veteran detectives. Each one prompts us to come up with this grand backstory, especially for how they each got their scar. It almost has us forgetting a crucial part in the two other stories - no matter what sides the parts of Yoongi ally on, the videos end with one of them killing the other. He's always at literal war with himself and trying to kill the other version of himself, but ultimately they're all Yoongi. Do you see where I'm going with this? In this video, Yoongi decides to be raw and honest - no more grand stories of heroes and villains, no struggle between 'good and evil'. This is simply /Yoongi's/ story, and now he's going to tell it. He reveals that it was just he himself who gave himself the scar and goes through all of the real struggles and traumas that he's been through and has dealt with behind the scenes all along. And, for the first time, one version of Yoongi tries to /save/ the other instead of killing them. I think this symbolizes that, if Yoongi had known that he was going to get into an accident and go through all that hardship because of it, he never would have put himself through it. So his past self tries to save his current self. But what's done is done. There is only one Yoongi, really, and it's the one who exists now. Only he can get himself out of the room. He hasn't yet, and it's a continuous uphill battle, but he still can. What's important here is that we see that Yoongi feels comfortable enough now to be honest and open about something so personal - he's come that far. And finally, he shows empathy and compassion for himself.

I can vouch for that personally cuz I've been in an accident and saw my life almost end bf my eyes, for a long time your brain plays that moment again n again bf your eyes. It's crazy. The moment I played the video it brought back all those trauma, along with that, thinking abt poor yoongis trauma n sufferings, made my mind freeze for the whole night, and I'm 28, still it took a day for me to get in terms with the mv.

The verification is from him shoving a handful of pills in his mouth and being found on the kitchen floor by (I'm guessing) his dad, and carving a scar on his face. It's not necessarily a concern about age but more for those who might have gone through those struggles of suicide and self-harm. It's a beautiful and raw video, but for some people it could bring up a lot of past or present traumas. I've already age verified so the pop-up I get is just warning about themes of suicide and self-harm.

AMYGDALA. This song. This video.. This just cracked wide open My darkest thoughts ive been suppressing cuz i needed to be fine..i had to.. I needed to move forward.. But lingering thoughts creeps and leaks in every now and then.. feeling of regrets and feeling of despair and guilt still lies deep in my mind and this song summarizes that very complex feeling…My heart feels heavy. I still remember vivdly those sleepless nights at the hospital w my grandma to one day waking up losing her to cancer .. Catching a full grown man my granddad having a major stroke Taking the Difficult decision to work abroad leaving my sick granddad and family. And having to come home to Resuscitate him and ultimately decide to stop and to let him go… Trauma.. painful memories.. . We will never know fully what anyone went thru personally but for yoongi to share these deepest thoughts thru this masterpiece. Hope he knows how this will comfort others who are suffering too. I Thank him for holding on.. for showing us how this part of our brain just tries to keep us safe by storing such painful memories and reminds us that such painful past makes us who we are now.

First of all, let me say, I really enjoyed your reaction! For me at least, the MV warning specifies that it includes suicide and/or self-harm topics, which I understand. I'm in a much better place right now than I was years ago and I still recoiled when I saw the box cutter in his hand. Yes, it is real life and it should be talked about, but I don't think anyone would be happy if someone who is currently struggling with self-harm went to watch this video, not knowing what was in it. That is what trigger warnings are for, for someone who might be adversely affected by imagery like this to decide if they are in the right headspace to see something like that. I think people these days use the word "trigger" in a way that has diminished its meaning, but for people who suffer from psychological trauma that can be *triggered* by imagery like in the MV, things like the content warning can make the difference between momentary discomfort when they go in knowing what they might see vs. a spiral of self-harm/suicidal thoughts they can't get out of. It is really unfortunate that on KZread that means that you also have to verify that you're 18+ old because this MV could be and probably is (at least to me) helpful and healing in a way.

I love this song and the MV, it's one of the best. I have been wondering why this is the third part of the trilogy, what the connection between Daechwita, Haegeum and Amygdala could be. To me Min Yoongi/Agust D is an immensely political person (see his lyrics). I might be wrong ofc, but If you look at Daechwita there is hope you can do away with tyranny and have sth like "democracy" (the "people" help the protagonist). Haegeum is much less optimistic, one ("bad") power is only replaced by another (a sad reality). What about Amygdala? Only by confronting yourself with the pains and hurts of the past, "unpacking them", you can go forward. But the next necessary step is "putting them back to where they belong" they are your memories, not your present, while keeping the knowledge of what you have learned about yourself/society through the "unpacking". It is an extremely painful and ongoing process but only by acknowledging the "traumata" and sufferings of the past (and they always stay with you) you have the chance to move forward, do sth new and different (D day). The Yoongi of Daechwita was angry, rebellious but also naive, while in Haegeum you could say he is desperate (nothing really changes however much you fight), only by accepting the situation as it is he/society can change (Amygdala).

BTS’ Suga goes on a journey through his past painful memories in the new video for “Amygdala,” taken from his new album under the Agust D moniker, D-DAY. The track, which is laced with rock riffs and hip-hop beats, finds the rapper recounting trauma he has experienced throughout his life, from a motorcycle accident he was in during his time as a trainee to his mother’s heart surgery. The visuals, which were directed by Lumpens, bring some of those events to searing life, with the video cutting between those recollections and a more recent version of Suga struggling to process them. The video opens with a content warning for content relating to suicide and self-harm.

I don't know how rating systems for media works in Korea so I can only guess about the reason for the age limit. I wonder if they see him cutting his face open with the knife as self-harm and him taking all of the pills as drug abuse. I think the knife scene was more implied since they didn't show it directly and the pills was just to show the passage of time where he had to take medication for his pain after the accident (perhaps also mental health things since he has mentioned dealing with anxiety, depression, ocd and adhd before). I suppose they're not looking at the intent of the scenes so much as they're focusing on how young people might see it. Personally I think young people are aware enough of the world and go through similar struggles too so they would understand it for what it is.

amygdala, region of the brain primarily associated with emotional processes. The name amygdala is derived from the Greek word amygdale, meaning “almond,” owing to the structure’s almondlike shape. The amygdala is located in the medial temporal lobe, just anterior to (in front of) the hippocampus. Similar to the hippocampus, the amygdala is a paired structure, with one located in each hemisphere of the brain. The amygdala is part of the limbic system, a neural network that mediates many aspects of emotion and memory. Although historically the amygdala was considered to be involved primarily in fear and other emotions related to aversive (unpleasant) stimuli, it is now known to be involved in positive emotions elicited by appetitive (rewarding) stimuli.

About the content warning - it was different in the US, just a warning. But I get where it comes from. There's a lot of fear when depicting suicide because it can genuinely lead to more people dying of suicide. I don't think it means we shouldn't show it, especially this honestly. And he survived, and while the song sits in his pain, it's from the perspective of a survivor. I don't think it will cause harm. I wish they didn't think age was the important thing that would protect people. Plenty of people over 18 wouldn't be in a good place to see this, and plenty of people under 18 should. Here it was a "mature content" warning and then a "depictions of suicide" warning, both of which I just had to tap on, and I thought that was fine. It wasn't a significant barrier, though.

Thank you for your thoughts. So many things worries me about the US media. Polarization, glorification of vanity, so much hate and divisiveness among everyone. Death of intellectualism and normalization of idiocy. Real thoughts and struggles of life should be the last thing we should be worried about.

The members may hug him. But you have to be in his inner circle to do that. Or do you like strangers going up to you and hug you? But I share your wish to give comfort. I don't think we can beside staying and defending him and the others from antis/cancel culture etc. Borahae!

가사의 "I don't know your name"에서 "your"는 청중들을 의미한다고 생각합니다.

I mean it's easy to be critical of the YT msg when you arent the one struggling with your mental health, no I haven't watched reaction yet and I saw what you said about how you are upset with censorship but still think about what other people have gone through

Why would you assume that I had no trauma and mental health issues in my life? The mv was about overcoming that and that is a good thing.

The content warning was 100% for the fact he cuts himself in the video and likely because he takes an awful lot of pills in which the imagery leads to believe ended him up in the hospital. So those parts of "real life" are hard to see for some people

  • @komerican-og

The cutting was symbolic and pills were for his depression and pain. I could see now how it could be viewed in certain way. But there have been so many stupid censors in the past. I am sure his song will do fine. It is just too good.

This is my comment three days later- just watched a fancam for Suga’s performance of Amygdala at his concert in NY yesterday. This was one of the better quality videos. I loved his performance, so moving! (Less sad than the MV). It’s not a spoiler for me cuz I want to take it all in now (even though I will be going to his concert in less than 3 weeks from now). Do not watch if this will be a spoiler for those of you who want to wait for the real thing. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYGumtR6pr21hZM.html

Misogenic and highly sexual lyrics and images in current music where the female subject is used and if artistic, lyrical, realistic and inspirational content is censored are not restricted. I think the difference is who earns $$$ with that content being accessible.

Age limit? Sorry, American hypocrisy. What about weapon laws? No problem in my country in Europe, just a general warning for ppl who might be sensitive to the subject.
