Same for Japan, it's conditioning. From early on you learn that this is it; go to school for 40+hrs a week, be better than the rest, work till you break and eventually get a wife and children, so that the cycle continues, that's your purpose. I've been to Japan two times; it's beautiful, but incredibly depressing.

You should also look at the TYT 2021 and AYT 2021 exams that we took as Turkish students just the previous weekend. It was the hardest university entrance exam of Turkey. (You can also look at the YDT (The English exam)) Actually for TYT, in my opinion Math was not that difficult but since we have a time limit that makes it impossible to solve all of the questions people had a really hard time, especially when the Turkish questions were hard and took longer than it supposed to.

I apologize for the incompleteness of the sentence beacause i'm not an English speaker. There is an error in the solution of question 30. When deriving da/dt , x should not be treated as a constant. x is the x-coordinate of the junction of the two graphs, which is a variable dependent on t that changes as t changes. The relation is expressed as the identity ln(x-t) = 1/(x-t). After finding dx/dt from this identity, substituting dx/dt contained in da/dt, we can eventually figure out f'(t).

Well as far as I can recall, it was WAY more difficult back in 2010s.. I reckon this is WHY Korean high school students are showing great performance on mathematics test till right before their Sueneung and suddenly lose motives of keep learning/training mathematics. Literally fed up with mathematics, stay away from math. For me as well, I cannot believe that I could solve those questions.. Was more like a machine that knows certain typical types of math questions and formulas, but if it's tweeked a bit, then doesn't know how to deal with it.

Hello I am a korean student. I am a sophomore in high school. First, I would like to add a few correction or additional information about the video. The math test sheet you showed us is for students involved in natural sciences.(And that is i think a test from 2 years ago mabye..) There used to be 2 kind of math tests. One for student involved in natural sciences, the othet for students involved in liberal arts. The latter was way easier than the former one. But starting from this year, there has been an intergration between the two. One selecting-subject and a common subject. And whatever the goal a student has, we just need to select one option. Calculus(limits of sequence, limit, differential, integral about transcendental function and different kinds of differential and integral), Geometry(parabola, hyperbola, vector), Statistics(number of cases, probability, statistics). and the common subject holds contents about exponential functions, logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, sequence, limit, differential and integral about polynomial function. Second, the english exam's listening is so easy that almost every student get high scores. but the real fun starts in the reading comprehension. Third, the korea's history is so eazy Fourth, the science test is divided in to I and II. For instance like physics I or life science II. And Mostly student take the former because it is relatively easy and less calculation. The latter contains more advanced contents. And more calculation. Last, unlike USA, Korean students don't go to universities just by SAT. Most seniors go to university by their test score at their highschool. And SAT are usually for the ones who tries again for a better school or some seniors.

To be fair, in America, you don’t go to school based on the SAT. You go based on some admissions officer interpretation of your activities, transcript, and essays and if they’re slightly better than another’s.

  • @450_undefined

    @450_undefined

    8 ай бұрын

@@lukechoi4696 Yes, I hope Korea had its own 'not test-based' admission system cause they are just expendable.. Though we can enter university based on our in-school test scores, that is as hard as taking CSAT. Those who get average score of some 1.xx can enter top 10 universities and that is really hard considering that grade 1 is just for top 4% students and we got more than 30 subjects to deal with. I know it's because of the limited capacity so it 'should be' hard but managing most subjects under 4%(which means within 10th place) is exhausting even to the best student in the school. Kind of pointless talent wasting.

As a south korean who got top scores on Korean Sooneung and got into medschool 6 years ago, from my experience i wanna say, the fact that you have to study stupid ancient korean poems or the same type of mathematical problems over and over again for huge amount of hours through middleschool and highschool, just to avoid mistakes on the actual test and achieve a higher score status in that bloody hell competition to get into a better college is actually a tragedy for most korean adolescents. To understand why the competition is so fierce, you must also know about the college entrance process of korea. It can be roughly diversified into two options, one is the classic method which ranks students based on their korean SAT(Sooneung) score. This method is called Jungshi(정시). The other method is to rank students where, on top of SAT scores, students' extracurricular activity or contribution to academic papers or volunteer work etc. is taken into consideration. This method is called Sooshi(수시).

I prepared taking Jee advanced test and Korean CSAT in the past. As a person who prepared both exams, Jee advanced test is actually more difficult than Korean CSAT. I mean Jee advanced test includes broader topics than Korean CSAT test that are not taught in Korean Highschool. However, what makes Korean CSAT hard is that institute have to rank 600,000 students in 1-9 rank with a limited topics or exam coverage. So, the institute have to make problems very tricky since we only have limited topics. If we take a look at the coverage topics, the levels aren't so high compared to Jee advanced test. However, what makes the test hard is the complication of problems. So, Don't fight which exam is much more difficult! Both exams are hard compared to SAT^^

Testing like this is pretty insidious and antithetical to actually understanding what someone's knowledge and skills are. While it looks like it might be better than are SATs in forcing people to actually use their knowledge, it's still in no way set up for anyone looking at the results to come to a meaningful conclusion about how the testee's knowledge was utilized. (There's an ongoing big push in education circles to do away with testing fetish, though administrators and politicians definitely don't like it, nor do students who have been expected to do anything else). During my PhD, one of my peers was a Korean scientist, who had been in one field for her undergrad, was now in a highly related but quite different field for her PhD, and now has jumped to a new subfield (albeit still related to her previous work, but has been a massive transition in what she has to actually do and know). She told me that her parents bemusedly don't really understand how she got here, because she was apparently a really bad student growing up (they are proud of her, they just don't understand what happened). I don't know how she did on the CSAT, but prior to college was when she was considered incapable of academic pursuits and wasn't getting good grades. And yet, here she is, now doing fundamental research at a national lab in essentially her third field/subfield of her career, and exams like the CSAT are meaningless in trying to predict such competence.

Thanks to Tibees for providing the solution to the second maths problem. Anyone wondering about the first math problem can find the solution below. -> The functions y=a^x and y=rt(3) intersect at point A(log_a(rt3),rt(3))...(found using basic algebra and logartihmic function). -> Now, since OA and OB are perpendicular, we can find the slope of the respective line segments and equate their product to -1(property of mutually perpendicular straight lines). -> This would give us a quadratic equation in terms of log_a(rt3). Substitute log_a(rt(3)) with t to obtain a simpler quadratic equation in terms of t. Solving that quadratic equation would give us the roots (the values of t which would satisfy the quadratic equation). -> Now substituting back the value of t as log_a(rt3), we would be getting exactly 2 values of log_a(rt3) which would be 1 and 3. -> Now for the final step, taking the anti-log of log_art(3)=1 and/or 3, we would be getting our final answers as a=rt(3) and (rt3)^(1/3). Since we have been asked the value of the product of these 2 values, the correct answer would be 3^(2/3) which is option 2. The reader can correct me if I am wrong. :)

Nice video, Tibees. 1:24 Answer to question 15 is 3^(2/3). As we know, the dot product of two orthogonal vectors is zero. So we calculate the first vector (that goes from 0 to A) (x;3^(1/2)) and the second (x-4;3^(1/2)). Then we multiply them and get x^2-4x+3=0. With the quadratic square formula, [4 +- (4^2-3*4)^1/2]/2. So the answers are x = 3 and x = 1. These values of x correspond to y = a^x. And we have a restriction which is that y = 3^(1/2). Replacing, 3^(1/2)=a^x. So a = 3^ [1/(2*x)]. Finally, we have two values of x, so the product of a is 3^ [1/(2*1)]*3^ [1/(2*3)] = 3^(2/3)

your idea is great but i think there's a more elegant way to solve it. As you may know, this triangle is right if and only if the intersections between y=a^x and y=srqt(3) are actually the intersections between y=srqt(3) and the circle of radius 2 and center (2,0). You then use your knowledge in trigonometry to figure out that these two points are actually the ones you found. Finally, you solve the equations. It's a good place to stop ;)

Hi Tibees, here's a video suggestion. Make one about Brazil's toughest high school exams: ITA and IME (air force and army's technological institutes), they are very hard, way harder than "Brazil's SAT" (ENEM).

Both have two phases (idk if thats the right word) ITA: 5 hours with 70 questions, with 5 options per question: 15 Physics, 15 Portuguese, 10 english (which does not count on your end score, it is just eliminatory), 15 maths, 15 chem. You have to make at least 6 questions in each (4 in english) and more than other candidates in order to go to the 2nd phase. The second phase is taken in two days. First day is made of 10 essay physics questions (no correct alternative) and an essay in portuguese. 4 hours Second day is made of 20 essay questions, 10 maths and 10 chem. 4 hours as well. IME is similar, but it does not have portuguese nor english in the first phase, they are taken in the second phase, which lasts 4 days, 4 hours per day, 10 questions each day(1day of math, 1 of physics, 1 of chem, 1 of portuguese and english, with an essay).

I feel a bit sorry for the hard competition there, as people have to go through so much to get to a well ranked uni. Meanwhile I got a Masters and PhD from ETH Zurich (Top 10 world-ranked) without having to rip out a leg. Sure it was a lot of work, but there was plenty of time for friends, fun, beer, and travel still. EDIT: though honestly, the difficulty level and scope of the whole exam seems not to exceed my swiss "matura", although I have seen that it has become much easier these days and also heavily depends on the school. sadly, there are no nationwide matura exams anymore, as they used to exist when i took them. also, here you could not redo the exams more than once. if you failed twice all universities are locked for you forever, and you can go to vocational school and become a plumber etc. also if you fail an exam twice at uni, even in the last year, you are locked out from that study direction forever. you may restart something else from scratch. so perhaps we have your tough sides too...

I'm from Switzerland too ! As you have a PhD, I was actually wondering if I should do one after getting my master's degree. I was made aware that it is not really valorized to have one if you do not plan to continue an academic career and many swiss employers do not hire them as you'd be seen as "too qualified". I was wondering what was your experience about it. Thank you :)

@@obviouslyme2906 I think it highly depends on the field. I have it in mechanical engineering, but I have my own company so I can't really speak about personal experiences. However, I can say that all my colleagues who got the same degree, did not have issues finding a job, as almost none of them went to academia. Also, once you are in a company, often you have better chances to get promoted with a PhD. I did hear the same from friends in other fields, such as law and economy.

    Took me a while (certainly more than 5 minutes!), but I solved question 15, here goes my solution: Let x be such that: aˣ = √3 ⇔ x = ln(√3)/ln(a) ≠ 0 [1] If we extend the OA segment, we get the line √3 = mx ⇔ m = √3/x, and if we extend AB, we get the line -√3 = m'(4-x) ⇔ m' = -√3/(4-x). Then, since the two lines must be perpendicular and since x ≠ 0, we have: m = -1/m' ⇔ √3/x = (4-x)/√3 ⇔ x(4-x)= 3 ⇔ x^2 - 4x + 3 = 0 Solving this quadratic equation, we get x = 1, x = 3. Plugging this in equation [1], we get a = 3^(1/2), a = 3^(1/6), so the product is 3^(2/3), which is answer 2.

The reading was very hard. The length of the passage was shorter than the previous year, however this did not mean the decline of difficulty, it meant the cram explanation, which means it required deduction even more. especially the passage which explained about legal nature of reservation is considered as the hardest law passage that was ever made at CSAT. However this CSAT became completely forgotten because of the next year's CSAT, which was the hardest ever.
