It's great to hear about these pencils from someone who actually used them back in the day. And the fact that these are still your original pencils is even more fascinating! If I had an opportunity to try them I don't think I would because I'm not really interested in something that I can't keep using... Anyway, good luck on your quest to collect the missing pencils :)

Thank you - I completely get why you wouldn’t want to try them :) They are still made in some form by Prisma but the formula is different I believe. Glad you enjoyed the video :)

I got a set for Christmas 1987 and I loved them. I bought more and I wished I have bought many many more. These layer like no other pencil. The only modern pencil I've found that comes close is Caran d'Ache Luminance Colored Pencils.

I love them so much especially for that fact - the depth of colour is amazing. I also have luminance and love them along with the Derwent drawing pencil which has a similar feel but not as many colours.

I found the 24 set of the watercolour ones last year in the local art shop, made in the UK in 1996. They were in a corner under a thick layer of dust.

Oh brilliant! What a find! This is why I look for small art shops when I’m travelling. You never know what treasures you may find :)

I just found a bunch of these in a box of very old art supplies my art mentor gave me last year. Many are little stubs, but I used one single stub on paper and it blows all my other pencils out of the water, including my beloved polychromos! I will say, the very closest thing I have is my very expensive Holbein pencils. I only have the 12 set of pastel tones so I can't compare colours (the berol I have appear to be all bright and dark) but they appear similar. I'll test them more when I'm less scared to use so many expensive supplies. I've noticed that there are individual berol Karismacolour for sale on eBay though 🖤

Gave in, did some swatches and they are SHOCKINGLY similar in terms of butteryness and how they feel going on. Shame I couldn't colormatch very closely with the limited amounts I have of each. Going to check your channel to see if you've tried these two together yet. If not, I beg you to!

They are so lovely to use and I love the way they lay down on paper. I have also got some Holbein but still they don’t match up to the Berol for me. :) 🥰

The only ones that feel slightly close are the Derwent drawing pencil but they are only available in limited colours.

Ah- ha! Are we the same person??? I feel the same way about mine, but I don't have anywhere near as many as you. My kids know my karismacolors are off limits and will be passed to "the artistic child" who has not been born into their generation, but potentially will be born into the next. 'The artistic child' does not have to be even especially talented, they just have to be able to appreciate the beauty and the quality of these pencils and vow never to drop them! Good luck on your quest. I got my set (much smaller) around maybe 1990? When I was still at school, and added a few open stock. My favourite was always scarlet red, and I appear to have bought 2 more open stock of that one but all 3 are well used and quite small. I am tempted to buy some prismacolors but they look so cheap and we've all heard about the quality issues, so I've never bothered. I thought the luminance would be the ultimate replacement, but nope. Next time I am back in the UK I will be buying Derwent lightfast but I am already sure they won't meet the standard set by karismacolor. 😢

Haha we sound like we may be! 🤣😊 The Prisma are allegedly the new Karisma but I am not sure the consistency of them would be the same and breakage is always mentioned. With Derwent - the lightfast are nice but still not quite there. Their drawing pencils are closer but the colour range is limited.

@@KoolKookyKreatures I have about 5 or 6 Derwent drawing pencils and yes, they are really lovely to use, but not really my preferred colour palette. It's funny, because everyone loves them, yet they've never expanded the range. I do really like the Pablo's and I really like the range of colours that Caran D'ache do. In some ways I prefer (& I should whisper this..) the Pablo's to the luminance as I just am not impressed by the fact that there are a few scratchy horrid ones. I just wouldn't be happy putting those out as a finished, developed product. Possibly my second favourite pencils would be the Holbein but I need to get a few more of those and the cost is just a bit much. My go-to, day to day pencils are the Faber Castell polychromos. I have the full set and I enjoy them, but I feel there are gaps - they could use more bright blues and aquas and the 3 metallics are a little bit rubbish, but overall they are great.

Ahh yes I do wish they would expand the range of those. I have bought a few Pablos recently and I like them a lot. Holbein is also good but pricey. The Derwent metallic pencils are pretty good and I completely agree that the Faber Castell metallics are not the best! Nice to find my pencil tribe member :)

good luck with your quest. I just want a full set of pollychromes .I have the 60 set but want the 120 . as I dont work it is hard ...Happy crafting

Thank you :). I also love my Polychromos set - they are very lovely and a nice pencil to work with for detailed work. I feel some of my pencil questing will involve me digging out pencil cases to see if some have made their way inside! :)

The nearest I have got to the Karismacolor has been either the Caran D’Ache Luminance or the Derwent drawing pencil. The Derwent one has a limited amount of colours but is lovely to use. Neither are exactly the same but work beautifully. If you want a pencil that holds detail then the Faber Castell Polychromos are great. They area blend of oil and wax and hold a sharper point for longer. Hope that helps! 🙂

Just saw these pencils featured in a video…must have been an old set…I cannot find them on Amazon. 😞

Oh wow!! How brilliant. I still have my original box that housed the 72 that there were in the range at that time. :)

For the artlovers there are Japanese karismacolors and yes they are fantastic and prismacolor gave the license for them to make it. So all legit.

Thanks Nora - that is very interesting to know :) I had a scout on the internet and this article is a good one to read sarahrenaeclark.com/fake-prismacolor-pencils/ According to this, the Japanese version is more like the original Sanford and much less breakage.
