10:22 Overview water temperature and amount of food
One of the key elements for growth and development of the body posture of a Koi is food. Lots of food. That is no secret at all, any Japanese Koi breeder will share this openly with you. But what exactly do Japanese Koi breeders give to their Koi in order to grow well?
We will share the feeding patterns, schedules and food used of several Koi breeders in Japan. For the highest class tategoi mud ponds containing magnificent Kohaku, Sanke and Showa, but also for more simple one-coloured Koi. We also share with you how you can calculate for your own Koi pond how much food you have to provide your Koi with. We use a formula to calculate the body weight of a Koi and determine with this in combination with water temperature the amount of food that needs to be given to Koi of each size.
Koi breeders make use of strict feeding schedules in order to make sure they get the best out of their Koi. They constantly adjust their feeding patterns based on the temperatures, rain and conditions of the pond. But they also observe their Koi very well, when Koi get too heavy or wide in body, they quickly react and adjust their schedule slightly.
Breeders in Japan make use of both floating and sinking food. They do this in order to prevent that Koi will get injured on their pectoral and dorsal fins. Usually Koi jump and fight for floating food. For that reason breeders like to mix their food.
The variety, brand and labels of food is based on the potential of the Koi. Each mud pond is fed with different sorts of food. Most breeders use a more simple food for their one coloured Koi, because these Koi just need basically protein based on fishmeal in order to grow. While the more high class Koi are fed with high quality brands that contain color enhancement ingredient, for example spirulina and astaxanthin. They can feed up to 60% of color feed during the summer period on high class Koi, that really are seriously large amounts compared with what most hobbyist give their Koi.
But how can you determine how much food you have to give your Koi? The best way to do that is to calculate the body weight of your Koi, and determine based on the water temperature how much you had to feed.
We use the formula (Length of Koi * Length of Koi * Length of Koi * Body volume) / 100.
As body volume I normally make use of 1,7: which is the average body volume for a pond where female and male Koi are mixed.
The answer of this formula will be the weight of your Koi in grams. In the video you can also find a video where I pre calculated the weight for you. You will just have to count up the numbers.
Based on the water temperature you can determine how much of the body weight of your Koi you have to give in food. For temperatures above 24 degrees, you can give up to 2% of body weight in food. So if you have 10 kilograms of Koi, you can give 200 grams of food on a daily basis. In the video you can find the complete table that includes the percentage of body weight to feed for all water temperatures.

    pH often is quite low in mud ponds. It varies from around 6,5 to the lower end of 7. Sometimes up to 7,5/7,6. For that reason sometimes mudponds one year can be very succesful with growth results, while next year the results can be disappointing because of heavy rain for example.

    Glad it was helpful! Both for under and above 20 degrees this table shows the amount of food that can be provided to Koi on a daily basis. So for example at 15 degrees 1% of body weight in food. If the Koi weight is 1000 grams, you can provide around 10 grams of pellets on a daily basis. Hope that will help you 😊

  • @Aboutkoi

    @Aboutkoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your comment, appreciated! The benefit it has in my opinion is a better distribution of food throughout the area if you have larger numbers of Koi. Meaning all Koi have more chance to grab some food, also the more 'shy' Koi that tend to stay in the background.
