My two all time favorite players … Bird and Dr J ! Julius ran the league in the 70’s and Bird in the 80’s ! For a short period in between , we got to see them battle against each other and trade turns for the title , both had show stopping talents !

Yeah, I'm sure the big cities had better access, but I grew up in a small town with about a half-dozen TV stations available. We had an antenna that had to be turned to pick up different stations. After Magic and Bird hit the scene, though, everything changed...and we finally got cable!

This is so cool. Grew up a Celtic fan but the Dr. was my first favorite player ever. Back in the ABA days. Him and Artis Gilmore.

This was a great ceremony. Props to Red Auerbach. Julius Erving has always been a great public speaker. As evidenced here. He's even give commencement speeches at college graduations. An extremely talented man on all fronts. Doc is also in my all time top ten players.

This is old-school class and rival respect, which means much more than ever, since nowadays all top players are friends. The flavor of the game is different when historic rivalries and "beefs" are the added fuel in the heart of stars that played for 1 club which they identified with...

What a very bright, intelligent and smart man he is and was. Awesome. All athletes are all professionals and we all all have respect for our fellow athletes. We play to win, but I have such great friends amongst my peers.

@3:51 Dr J’s joke about ‘owning a piece of the rock’ was a callback to a commercial for Prudential investment company.

As a skinny white kid trying to play the game in the late seventies, Dr. J was the GOAT of my youth. Basketball games were only shown on Sunday mornings at 10:00 right after we got home from church. One game that had been played sometime during the previous week, poor quality, and riddled with commercials. We never knew which teams we were getting as TV Guide would only list “Basketball - TBD” …to be determined. I was never so happy as when it turned out to be a Sixers game. Call me a Boomer, but kids today have no idea, and perhaps no real appreciation for how special the game and its best players can be.

I didn’t know the set up was quite like that. had to be an amazing feeling where you didn’t know which game you were getting and it was the player or team you wanted to see. Like a surprise box!

Thanks for this. 👍 I like hearing your take on things. Part of what made these games exciting to watch are the caliber of the opponents. Dr. J was an opponent who was very worthy of respect and admiration for many reasons. There is an interview that Chick Hearn (Laker commentator) did with Larry not too long after the "45-6 tussel" Bird and Dr. J had. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iGmAj9euctSsmcY.html Nice interview. Chick had a number of nice ones with Bird.
