There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding on the subject of tool warranties. Koken Japan does not warranty the tool. Koken USA is a seperate company from Koken Japan. Koken USA pays for exclusivity in the US market. Koken USA is offering and paying the cost of the warranty on the tools that come through their supply chain to the US. Koken USA has to account for this warranty cost in the items they sell. Koken manufacturing in Japan does not compensate Koken USA for the warranty. Koken tools coming into the US through other avenues than Koken USA are what would be termed "grey" market. These grey market tools come without the cost of the warranty offered by the authorized US distributor, in this case that would be Koken USA. Koken USA can't be expected to pay the cost to warranty tools brought in to the US through the grey market. It is the equivalent of asking Ford to warranty the Chevy you bought. This issue is also highly prevalent in the diagnostic scan tool market, actually much worse because Chinese CCP companies are worse offenders of not policing grey market sales. Autel US and Launch Tech USA are separate companies from the CCP companies that produce the scanners they sell. Like Koken USA they are separate companies from their overseas partners. What makes this worse with diagnostics is the labor cost of supporting scanners is far greater than supporting hand tools. This support includes 100's of US engineers that help code the software for North American market cars. Phone support techs, warranty techs, sales reps, accountants...... and all other types of support staff. Grey market sellers have none of these costs and the hardware scan tools run on isn't much more than a mid grade android table. These grey market tools flood Amazon, Ebay and other websites at prices far lower than US market wholesale prices. Autel US and Launch Tech USA just like KoKen USA have authorized retailers lists on their websites. These are vendors that are confirmed to be selling tools that came through their supply chain and not the grey market. If you compare prices across all of those vendors they will be mostly in line with each other. The margin on these tools for the authorized vendors is very low. It is not uncommon that a grey market tool is listed on Amazon for literally half the cost a US vendor can buy that tool wholesale.

I didn’t even know Japanese tool companies had warranties like American focused companies do. When I bought into Koken tools I bought them for the quality tools not the warranty. If I’m going to be beating on something I’ll grab the snap on so I won’t have to worry if it breaks. I know on Wednesdays the snap on man will be there with a new one, repair it, or have one ordered. Koken is my go to for most of my stuff when it comes to hand ratchets and sockets. Especially in 3/8 and 1/4 inch. There stuff is so compact and low back drag it makes those jobs in tight areas a dream tool to use. Anyone try their 1/2 stuff on heavy duty work? If so how does it hold up?

That is how many international businessess operate. If you buy a Samsung device imported to the U.S. from the Korean market, the serial number identifies is as for that market... and if you have a warranty issue, you will have to deal with Samsun Korea, not the U.S. branch of Samsung.

Hello CP AND SUNNY: THANK you CP for this Koken video. Sorry for this late posting but power just came back on, 3rd time today. If Koken only wants their approved distributors to sell their stuff fine. Then with all their influence they should monitor who is doing the reselling & issue a ciese & desist order. All I know is that if my Matco tool truck is selling Koken that's good enough for me. At my age I 'll be damed if I must spend my time scouring the earth for approved distributors that has been blessed with holy water. I'm the customer & I demand service, & I my friend have the money. As far as the Wana be landscaper goes IMHO his word, reputation, advice is pure S IT !!!!! God Bless you CP & my best to SUNNY. 😅 TMP FROM N.J.

From what I was told lots of companies biggest issues in the modern day issue is warranties. So Apex tool group owns Gearwrench. Their biggest buyer is Amazon. Amazon has a minuscule if not nonexistent broken tool return. Due to this they take priority. Also other distributors are being hit with new contracts that Gearwrench will only warranty 3% of purchases. Amazon buys a ratchet for $60. Sells it for $100. A middleman to distributor buys it for $65. Sells it to a dealer for $80. The dealer sells it for $115. That extra $15 is the price of having someone to toss it at when it breaks. When you buy off Amazon you have no one to toss it at. Even if you do warranty it Amazon will just eat it as a return and not get Gearwrench involved.

In a business sense a warranty is an add on service for an add on price to lessen buying hesitation (that the company doesn't seek to fulfill). Japan has tremendous standards compared to anywhere else, so if something broke, you broke it. Buy direct from japan for 1/2 off

I’m an importer distributor of electronics and I too have to deal with not only gray market but unauthorized dealers… we are also obligated to warranty any products we distribute. If the manufacturer with the importer can not control the gray market they then need to be clear with “x length warranty to the original purchaser when purchased from an authorized dealer and registered online”. That being said I don’t pay a premium for hand tools for the lifetime part or the warranty I buy them for the no questions asked part…. Also their products should have plenty of margin to cover warranty issues including the ones that are 2nd hand or gray market. Bottom line this importer has zero idea how to be a successful importer and will likely fail after destroying the reputation of koken.

Asking Koken USA to warranty tools not imported and sold through their network is the exact equivalent of expecting JDTCO to warranty a tool they did not sell just because it a brand they offer. Koken USA is a different company than the Koken that manufactures the tool, just as JDTCO sells Gearwrench they aren't the same company.

I hand them a broken tool, they hand me a replacement or order it if its not on hand. I don't have to spend any more time (priceless commodity) than that. Amateurs expend time to save $, professionals expend $ to save time. Its all subjective to however one chooses to operate but id rather take my kids fishin or somethin rather than lookin for the best deal or argue over warranty. Just how i see things lads. I love my Ko-ken ratchets, sockets and other tools that I purchased from Amazon Japan. The calculated cost of paying extra for a warranty isn’t worth it for me, personally. My family is from Northern Europe, where it is ingrained to take the best care of tools and respect their limits. Lifetime warranties are moot in that part of the world. This is the land of silly “let’s take this ratchet to failure” videos and the breaker bar is a distant memory. JDTCO is one of the most negative spouts of vitriol on KZread, which is bizarre as they are retailing goods and the goal should be to maximize capturing customers. Mr Subaru just isn’t interesting to me. There’s 3 sides to every story, but with this saga, I could care less.

The manufacturer is not offering any warranty. The US company Koken USA is offering to warranty the tools they sell, those tools they sell are made by Koken manufacturing. They can not afford to warranty every tool ever produced by Koken manufacturing. Don't let their names fool you they aren't the same company.

  • @AToolWithTools

    @AToolWithTools

    9 күн бұрын

@@jfantisExactly! I think it would also help people to understand just what a lifetime warranty is because there seems to be a lot of folks that just expect it to be "I gave them money one time so now I should be able to deliberately run it over with a bulldozer and tie it on a string hanging off my car and drag it down a gravel road and put a 3 foot cheater pipe on it and they just gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme new one." Lifetime is a length of time, not a level of service. Most lifetime warranties are of the limited variety, this means there's certain disqualifications like wear&tear, or willful misuse. If a company with an official policy of limited lifetime hooks you up anyway, that's not because it's their policy, it's either an act of goodwill or the dealer is biting the cost on it for goodwill. This comes up a lot with truck brands. I've spoken to dealers and at least one has given their experience across a couple decades of selling. About 70% of what they swapped out, they got reimbursement (account credit) from Snap-on, meaning corporate received the item and confirmed that it fell under their lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship which is ALL the official policy covers. The remaining 30% that were abused, the dealer ate that cost to satisfy their customers. It is also fair of a manufacturer to only warranty things that were purchased through an authorized outlet in my view because from their end it's a guarantee that it's a service performed on a product that they in fact did produce. It's not particularly hard to find knockoffs sold by unscrupulous sorts with the advent of the Internet and the selling power some brand names have and the rise of cheap manufacturing abroad. The person or company offering a good warranty shouldn't be on the hook for items they didn't even make.

How was dave wrong? Alot of information was subjective based on a video frankly it was knee jerk reaction based off limited information I'm sorry but if you believe that everything can be perfect on a video your expectations and reality are skewed.

Frankly, I don't care if he is or isn't a ko-ken dealer. All I care about is who's gonna warranty my tool. So how is that realavant to you as a customer?

Ooooooh I get to be the devils advocate. I don’t like neither of them. Mrsuburu or JDTC. When I was new to the industry I found Mrsuburu first before I found CP so damn wish I didn’t. That hurt me. Now I see mrsuburu videos and I think “if snap on designed a dealer in a lab that’s how he would be” JDTCO little bit of bull they spew in their videos and it’s honestly annoying. Childish if you ask me. The biggest one that bugged me was the nano ratchets by Astro. Claimed to have bought every one in the country. But BOOM right there on Amazon was the same thing for same day shipping in my area. But it could be my hatred for Jersey too idk. I had to chase an AWOL dude in 2015 through Jersey when I was in the army. Good times. He unalived a guy. Who knows all I know is I appreciate the respect CP gives even with difference of opinion because he’s somebody I call a friend.

I don’t know if other people have the same experience as me, but the first time I bought Koken tools it was from Tools from koken of USA. The quality of the ratchet I got was subpar it had a lot of wobble to it. Then I would buy Coke into from Japan Amazon and I believe they’re at a higher standard and quality. Thanks CP

That’s awesome. I’m a type two diabetic and six months ago. I had a double bypass open-heart surgery so we could all do a better job of taking care of ourselves. And by that I mean we have to do it “For” ourselves. We all appreciate what you’re doing and how you help the community through sharing your knowledge and experiences in the automotive and tool world. I’ve been building racing engines for over 45 years and I’m always learning.

If it’s a real Koken tool then it should be warranted no matter where it came from if they want to have a warranty. If they don’t wanna play in the warranty world fine. What a bunch of clowns. They must have corporate office in Nagasaki or Hiroshima.

Koken in Japan, the actual manufacturer of the tool, only offers a warranty of "it's good when it comes out of the package, that's all we promise." Koken USA is Palmac, and they're just licensing the name, and taking it on themselves to offer a warranty on anything sold through them, and that's fair enough. Let's say you run a Chevy dealer, and Chevy offers what is it 36k/3 years warranty? And you can go out of your way to say "any new Chevy we sell, we'll do 5 years/60k miles warranty." Should you be on the hook for every Chevy sold in the US? Or just the ones you sell, as is clearly stated in your warranty policy? The whole lifetime warranty thing in general is an American concept and seems to have become a sort of entitlement. Many Japanese manufacturers only offer a "the product is good the moment you take it out of the package" warranty. Euro brands also do this, or will have a limit of a few years; Knipex in Europe doesn't do lifetime warranty, that's a thing they do only for their American subsidiary.

It's a shame when someone ( say a chosen tech ) climbs on a landscapers pecker just to keep him from bad mouthing him. JDTCO is the only Tool seller I've come across that's genuinely concerned about getting the customer the best bang for the buck. Coyle is a great informative guy but he says honestly he's mostly geared for truck sales. Nick is online. It's horrible when a paid spokesman talks trash about a guy telling the truth. It may of worked once for Biden but everyone's learned. CP keep posting. You sir are awesome. This lawncare guy has figured out talking about nick raises his viewership. People just need to ignore him. Unless you need help getting rid of crab grass. Nicks kinda the Tyson of tool sales. He's not talking, he's doing.
