Simple Golf Swing Types: Elevate Your Game with This Crucial Knowledge
Today, I have somewhat of a public service announcement for my fellow golfers. Yes, golf can be a challenging game, but it doesn’t have to be as hard as many of us make it out to be.

Bryson DeChambeau cemented his legacy as a U.S. Open champion once again in 2024. The tournament, held at the challenging Pinehurst No. 2 course, saw DeChambeau battling it out at the top of the leaderboard. He emerged victorious, defeating rivals like Rory McIlroy and securing his second U.S. Open title. This win solidified DeChambeau's position as one of the game's most dominant forces.
Bryson DeChambeau's swing is known for being unique and powerful. Here are some key characteristics:
Single Plane Emphasis: DeChambeau strives to swing the club on a single plane, minimizing the loop the clubhead makes during the swing. This approach is different from the more traditional two-plane swing.
Wide Stance and Early Shift: He uses a wider than average stance and initiates the swing with a lateral shift, transferring weight to his right leg early.
Power Generation: His swing is all about generating power. This comes from his strong physique, wide stance, and unique sequence of movements.
Weak Grip: DeChambeau uses a weaker grip pressure than most golfers, allowing for more clubface rotation and a tendency to hit draws (fades to the right for left-handed golfers).
Avoda Golf, a young company named after the Hebrew word for "precision," is making waves in the golf world. They specialize in irons, known for their innovative "Combo Length" option alongside traditional "Same Length" sets. Bryson DeChambeau, uses Avoda Golf irons with a unique "bulge and roll" design.
A lot of what makes golf difficult comes down to our mindset and the words we use when talking about the game. Let’s dive into simplifying your approach to the golf swing by identifying your specific swing type.
Using this simple test, we can start realizing which swing type you might fit into.
Recognizing Swing Types
Shoulder Plane:
Common among taller golfers with longer arms.
Requires more rotation from the legs and core.
Setup adjustments: left hip higher at address to facilitate better rotation.
Hip Plane:
Suited for golfers with shorter arms in proportion to their height.
Often associated with the classic "shallow" swing.
Setup adjustments: slight backward stance to maximize rotation on the downswing.
Torso Plane:
Typically for golfers whose wingspan equals their height.
Maintains medium rotation on both backswing and downswing.
Often the focus of generic golf instruction.
Effortless golf swing that is also a consistent golf swing must be a reliable one. A Simple golf swing. A golf swing that you can use for many years to come playing, getting a better golf swing and score results. Yes, definitely resonates with me ! I've tried the shallowing of the club in the downswing to much frustration ! I'm definitely a shoulder plane body type. Thank you !!

This is brilliant content that I’ve never heard, I am 6’2 and although I’ve been getting better and better, I occasionally have those days where my swing is off. After watching this video I now understand why this may be happening. I think I go from my shoulder swing to a torso swing sometimes. This may have something to do with me squeezing in a round when I can early in the morning when I don’t have a tee time which allows me to beat the crowd but doesn’t allow me to do any swing warm ups which kind of forces me to resort back to my old torso swing which was wrong for my body. I actually have a tee time for tomorrow where I can warm up and I’ll get a chance to compare. Thanks for the knowledge!

So I'm 5' 11" in height with a 6' 1" wing spand ....... I was going to a large instructional golf chain. I never felt like the lesson I was taking really translated to golf course. So now I'm trying after reading the book " Stack & Tilt" this methodology to golf.

I am definitely a shoulder plane person. I have been trying to keep the downswing as low as possible and as a result I often have an outside in swing (resulting in drastic pulls and hooks)

I'm really looking forward to this breakdown. By the measurements I'm about equal between height and wingspan, and I've honestly never felt comfortable trying to do hip plane. Not sure if shoulder plane or torso plane fits me better -- I've always been much too confused between different ideas in golf. I want to get better but it's so hard navigating all the contradictory ideas and most instructors just teach the way they swing.

Here on the east coast of the United States you can feel the resonation in the air. Swirling extremely heavy in the mountains of West Virginia. Shallowing no more!

I 100% resonate with the shoulder plane swing. I am unable to find any consistency and might see straight shot down the middle, a pull dead left, or a push right.

Dude this was wild..for the last weeks i have try to change my swing from the ground. I been thru like 8 diffrent stages and finally starts 2 see results. i am just into the bit of "shallowing", and since im starting to get a hang off what the golfswing really is and how compression works, i would definitely waste alot of time here, since im the type who "if i know theres a optimal way 2 do it, im not gonna settle with anything less"😅 Never heard about arm span and immediately checked mine..im 2.5 inches longer than by body height! I will deffo pay attention to this! Thank you🤌

As you know Alex I've been struggling for quite some time....(I had a series of lessons about 18 months ago and pro was trying to get me to use a body swing ...which didn't gel with me at all (I didn't even have the last 2 lessons) I've since been working on my swing on my own and I know know I'm using shoulder plane swing (thanks) and have got a more repeatable swing now much straighter distance is still lacking a bit ...) I recently reshafted my irons (Cobra one length F7 using ladies lightweight graphite shafts) which has improved my distance and don't leave me feeling as tired....(my age and some medical issues are now my biggest problem)

Ok, I am 6’1”, maybe a tad less now that I’m old. 😉 But my armspan is 6’5”. I think your contrast from shoulder to hip plane explains why the pro wanted my left hip pocket visible from behind at contact, but I just could not make that happen more than about 1 in 10 tries. Very interesting.

@@TheArtofSimpleGolf Still evolving, but ball striking was noticeably better today. Had a half dozen that were top ten of all balls I’ve hit this year. When I kept my head still, got my weight forward, and didn’t cast early, things worked very well. L-R dispersion got centered instead of just to right. And tighter.

moving the hip forward and up how does that work with weight transfer. I am right handed and swing left (for over 10 years) and have always struggled with getting on my front side. My wing span is 3 inches longer than height

Your hip tilt is probably much flatter and back. Try it. Also a video done a month or so back “2 inches… “ is more detailed in that

Interesting stuff, I've struggled with my swing lately and recently realised that in my backswing I tend to swing my arms back with not much shoulder turn, and then I fire the arms instead of allowing my torso turn to pull the arms through. One question... During a lesson once, to help prevent my OTT swing, I was told to "keep my hands low in the backswing". I hit some decent shots but didn't know if this was a technique or just a practice feel to stop OTT? Personally I wonder if my poor torso turn means I'm lifting too much, and maybe low hands will help me? Cheers.
