Phil always seemed to really appreciate and respect the artists on tour with him. I always got a chuckle at the length of his band introductions. When he would get to Leland, Phil would always say that Lealand was clean-shaven when the introductions started.

I can't put together in words on how much I love Phil Collins. Just his drumming alone in those early Genesis records is unbelievable and when you add everything else he's done it's mind blowing! We (all his fans) know for a fact millions of others feel the same way ❤❤❤ They say the roar of Godzilla is the most recognizable sound in every country around the world ... I believe it's his infamous drum intro to 'In The Air Tonight'

What I like best about Phil Collins is that he was a friend to, supporter of, and collaborator with John Martyn, who I imagine most Americans won't have heard of, but who (in my humble opinion) was one of the UK's most creative, unique and innovative musicians. Hugely underrated and nowhere near as famous as he deserves to be.

Mine too and I've never even met him. But Phil's influence on me as a drummer is undeniable, everlasting and so poignant. I don't agree that his rise was overnight, however. He arrived in genesis in 1971 and his first solo record was in 1981. He toured the 'Hello, I Must Be Going' record in 1982 in clubs and then hit his stride with the third.

I discovered Phil back in the 70's when I was a teenager and a drummer at the time, and quite simply, Phil's playing simply blew me away. I think when we're children, our emotions are heightened, and I've always been a sensitive soul, but boy, it is so hard to put into words how much Genesis during that era would absolutely tug at my heartstrings. Phil's playing was the most inventive, creative I ever heard (and I'd heard a lot of good stuff around that time). He played for the music, sometimes his fills would be sooooo simple, yet soooooo perfect. Other times he would play and for *decades* I'd be left wondering 'how did he do that'???? Oozed musicality out of every orifice and pore and we ALL owe him so much. I am incredibly gutted about his health issues and how the hell someone with his wealth could have gotten such bad surgery, surely there's a lawsuit right there?? (not that that would ever substitute or replace his inability to function as an everyday person). Phil, you've got nothing to prove, already proved it all. Enjoy your time mate (ps I'm from England as well!).

I went twice, possibly on consecutive evenings, when Phil Collins toured Australia in 1985. Musically, is was as perfect a show as one could wish for, from the musicianship to the awesome sound system he had. Personally, I preferred his first 2 albums to this one, and my musical tastes went somewhere else after that period. But, that's not a criticism. I have always admired Phil Collins's musical skills, especially how he in some songs made the drums an integral part of the song composition. His drumming and singing both reached technical perfection. It was also great to see him at that time working with other favourite musicians of mine, such as Robert Plant and Eric Clapton. I saw him also when Genesis toured Australia during the 1980's.

Watching Phil perform take a look at me now - just him on piano - changed my perspective - I wasn't a fan of Phil - not my thing - but I still remember hearing in the air tonight - the first time and my friend was like " who's that on drums " - I told him it was all Phil - Amet Ertigen said when someone thought they had a hit , he would pull out in the air tonight and play it - then tell them - that's a hit !

Imagine you create a beat as a drummer , you have kept that beat perfect and protected it and it's purity for many decades , then a time comes when you have to hand the beat over to someone else to keep for you because you got old , you still hear that beat as clearly and as perfectly in your head and yet no one else can do the justice so you can't get along with them and you seem like a crank , but it's just that it was your beat and it needs to be heard the right way . I don't know if Phil did stuff to where he deserves this or not , but I do see it as a unique form of torment , Yes I don't know what he deserves , but I do know from personal stuff , he can " NEVER GIVE UP " He owes it to himself to never allow this to stop him . Leland Sklar is a class act , there are many true class act session musicians they are the backbone and grooving spine of the industry .

As a drummer/vocalist, Phil Collins has always been a hero to me. watching him grow into the role in the post-Gabriel Genesis was inspiring. I’ve seen him perform live many times since 1982 and I was always blown away. The concept of being able to hit things with sticks, and then go front the band was inspirational to me. his tambourine “solo” in “I know what I like” was always fun to watch. I’m happy I was able to see Phil Collins perform live as many times as I did.

The press dissed Rush as well. To this day, I have never given media one scintilla of respect. Especially the entertainment media. "They know where to put the corks" Collins' body of work speaks for itself. I'm glad that one of my Top 5 bassists was a big part of the best of it. As a drummer, bassist, and shittyh guitarist since I was 14 (68 now), I've had my share of experiences with musicians. They are an odd group, to say the least. Like engineers, but in Reverse - all emotive and competitive. I guess that to be an artist takes a different set of colors as your palette. To me, it explains all the quirkiness we all see in famous personailties.

I stopped reading reviews in the mid-80s. It was obvious that they were all bitter that Phil had made it big despite them. His work with Genesis, solo, and in all the other projects he undertook was exceptional. All the reviewers had was (unjustified) personal attacks on his looks and personal life, and the 'stupidity' of his fans for liking him. Well, those reviews and reviewers are long forgotten, but Phil is a true legend and his incredible body of artistic excellence will live forever.

Leland is a legend but his memory is fading him here. Before NJR (which I loved & played daily) Phil was not just a "drummer in a band" who had "overnight success" with the 1985 release. He'd already had 2 Top 10 albums of his own and 7 in a row with Genesis, and was a staple on MTV. "In the Air Tonight" had already become a classic and was used by sports teams across the globe as music to set the mood. But it's interesting to hear how NJR took him to the next level and larger venues. Too bad he got bad press for it.

Never entered my mind. He came across as down to earth and some one who enjoyed what he was doing. So talented.

mmm... not the impression I got. There for some years in the 1990s or so I heard, he apparently had an 'attitude' about no longer liking progressive rock... If that counts. 😅

I must take exception at how Leland describes Phil, all due respect. There was nothing "overnight" about Phil Collins. And he wasn't just a drummer in a band.

I really think he was just describing the sudden jump in stardom, not in any way denigrating Phil, or Genesis….

I dont really care for his solo stuff but its true that the way the press reacted to his music in britain was nuts, but it was even nuttier that he listened. I think they got more venomous because they saw he actually took it seriously. Apart from the Sex Pistols most punk was pretty forgettable, so the press really had nothing to do. But if you want to know Phil at all, there's a documentary on Live Aide, and one of the guys there was Neil Innes from the show "The Young Ones", and on that show they had a line "I"m so bored, I must be listening to Genesis". And the look Phil gives this guy in the documentary is just the most daggers you've ever seen from Phil collins....and it wasn't even this guys line or character. But thats how loyal he was and how much he took it to heart, even though HE admits to not liking a lot of Genesis stuff. Its like what Johnny Ramone said, if somebody had said something about Joey, he'd want to get him....even though he and Joey never really even got along. But Phil did let it go a bit to his head, as anybody would, the guy was huge and while a hard worker unlike Roger Waters he's not been said to have reduced his employees to tears.

I've been a die-hard fan of Phil Collins since my cousin first turned me on to Genesis in 1975 right after Peter left it turns out. The doctors who butchered him surgically and pumped him full of steroids in the 1980s deserve to rot in hell for doing this to him.

British press are shit full stop…they never like any artist who is successful and Phil went stratospheric fuelled by the love of us fans who saw him as a unique artist who has influenced and effected so many lives with his drumming, vocals and his knack of writing catchy ballads and rock music ❤️❤️

At the time the only musical press worth reading was Music Weekly (the trade magazine, centrefold was posted on most record shop walls showing the charts), and maybe Smash Hits. Sounds and Melody Maker, by the time of NJR, had degenerated into simply sneering at success, or mocking craft, musicianship or virtuosity. Mainly a bunch of Johnny Rotten wannabes, so desperate to spot the next "big thing", they lost track of talent at every opportunity. Mainstream press was just sharpening its' knives, honing its' skills in the old build 'em up, tear 'em down game.

I really didn't like that Genesis did The Last Domino tour. It just looked so sad and unnecessary. It was heart breaking to see Phil Collins reduced to ill health and still being expected to do a show. I refused a ticket having seen some phone footage. I thought it was just not right. When in Rome 2007 is a great document of a Genesis reunion and it should have been left there. Loved Phil and his work with Genesis from 1980 to 2007. I kind of lost interest in the solo music at Both Sides which I felt was a disappointment and lacked a critical eye on standards expected. But what a back catalogue and what a consummate entertainer. Thanks Phil. Wonderful memories.

Saw him on the Clapton comeback tour in Baltimore(?). Not many (I believe) knew it was he until the intro's. Place went nuts. Not sure but it looked like he was wearing old sweat pants (soaked to the skin) and a T with a towel around his neck. Wasn't he voted best singer/ drummer of all time? If not, gotta be 2.
