@ 3:24 you actually see a small lake evaporating as the flame front gets closer - in the center of the shot... the attention to detail in this CGI is amazing

God, seeing the orange auroras is terrifying in this scene. That's how you know the solar flare is eviscerating the ozone layer and it's only a matter of time now before you're about to die. Beethoven's 7th Symphony movement 2 was a perfect music choice too. It fit perfectly somehow. Whoever chose that piece did their job and they KNEW how to do it.

At such a high temperature and the magnitude of the explosion, they didn't feel a thing.

This is how I know the movie was great... I remember seeing this movie in theaters last minute and when it ended everyone got up silently and just walked out. You could almost hear a pin drop. And then someone asked “so what did you think?” ALL OF A SUDDEN conversations erupted left and right! People absolutely hated it. People absolutely loved it. People were sad. People were intrigued. People were confused. All at the same time! People’s imagination were, even if only briefly, pushed to the brink of their limits. Look at the comments here! It was the exact same reactions. I have personally drawn the conclusion that people who didn’t like this movie are narcissistic, have REALLY short attention spans, unimaginative and have low levels of intellect. But that’s just me…. Idk how others feel.

this movie is such a classic. the ending with Beethoven is so chilling. Also I love how he smiles when asked where Caleb is remembering he is safe

The actors did a really great job at the emotional level!! Already at 0:23 I’m losing it!! Cage is funny and all but this Beethoven Symphony .7 piece is just blowing my mind, and it always has, and always will. 😢

Out of all the apocalypse movie, this ending take the cake. In all other zombie/comet/weather crisis, life can go on after some time. But this one, there is no more. All the atmosphere has been blast off. Earth would be just a barren rock.

The music of the ending scene is still stuck to my mind after all these years. Just amazing and classical

I love the symbolising at the end with the 2 kids and Adam and eve. Both were full of innocence, the kids wear white which also symbolises this as well as the fact that they're kids, both were the first people on the planet. Both were male and female...let's just hope that tree doesn't have any bad apples...

This scene shows us just how much humanity has build and live upon to just like that, gets taken out by a single solar flare.. Just Unimaginable.

More chance getting gamma rayed tbh, our sun is young that's why life is able to exist. Our lifetimes are so short it's practically non existent. You should be worrying about yellowstone or dystopian society because trust me both of those things are very close to happening.

We should have more apocalypse movies like this! An unstoppable disaster. (The CGI is at its best with these these types of scenes!)

This movie is perfect!!!!! the script, the performances, the music, everything!! I've seen it a lot of times and it gives me many different feelings, a bit of fear but also hope. It always makes me cry and reflect on the mysteries of life.

Perfect music for the end of a good movie. it was also in the final of Zardoz, a much underrated film from the 70's. ;-)

One of the best ending in a movie history , no doubt.When the Earth destroyed, is shown from the space , you just know that no one is leaving in this planet any more.This is scary.The ending is so good , and so scary.

It's so heartbreaking to see poor earth under in a devastating crisis. On the other hand, it was deeply satisfying to see all of other ships from dropping a lot of other people in the new planet.

This is why humanity needs to establish a sustainable colony on another planet asap. That way our species, culture, and knowledge can live on

I think every generation (since the 50s) has a movie that traumatized them exactly the same way. For me (I'm 49) it was The Day After (1983). I saw it when I was 11; it messed me up for about 20 years.

"What a delicious looking fruit! I wonder what it tastes like."

My mother told me while we were watching this, that this scene might be showing what happens to the people that were left behind after the “rapture” that happened that included the kids going to a place that is probably a supposed heaven

I just saw DLU as well. It was heavy handed satire to be sure. But I don't hate it, it was entertaining for what it was. Normally I don't care for Jennifer Lawrence but she was actually just fine in it. And an older Leo DiCaprio gave a pretty damn good performance as well. As did Meryl Streep. She is such a great actress and she really makes you hate her characters!

great thing about this film is how it plays on both scientific and religious aspects

In 2009 I loved this movie so much, it was one of my favorites at that time (and still)... The Symphony n°7 is absolutely perfect for the ending, I watched it over and over again... and now 2020 im here again, crying for everything is happening and alot of memories.

The music hits so hard that it made me cry because world ending.

This, imo, is the most powerful end of the world scene ever.

Every time I used to see these movies, I always thought "Theres no way people would behave this stupidly during an apocalypse". After going through the Covid pandemic I can't believe I ever doubted it.

Years ago my young son was obsessed with super Nova's. He kept asking about our own sun and how it would affect the Earth. I informed him that our sun would not go super Nova but basic Nova. Shortly after his questions this movie came out so I took him to see it. "It would be a bit like this...only faster."

The shot at 2:57 is spectacular... the fingers of a star brushing aside in an instant everything that had ever been.
