I think the most compassionate take on the man’s actions is that because he had not completely forgiven the people whom he may have thought to have wronged him, e.g. his relatives, he former fiancée, in such that on the deep level, he thought that he didn’t deserve either wealth or true love, and thus rejected both opportunities presented to him which then led to catastrophic consequences.

Very good method of teaching or guiding method of morals and ethics for human race during the time of crisis which is forgotten in the long run for the last 50 years of modernisation.
