My chickens lived in a cardboard box sitting on an old washing machine in the corner in the back yard.. i stuck two sticks in the side and a couple in the corners to prop up the box. Covered it with a tarp so it doesnt get wet and threw some dried grass on the bottom. They also had a smaller box with some dried grass right next to it for laying eggs. They were happy and healthy. I had 11 of them and on average had 7 eggs a day with dark yellow yolks. They came out when they wanted and roamed my back yard. It wasnt ideal but it worked for the many years i had them.

Instruction unclear, my chicken are breakdancing. Help, what do it do?
I don't get it. Why should one keep chickens in odd numbers? What does that have to do with the pecking order? Are they not able to have a pecking order when kept in even numbers?

my experience is that one will become the outcast in an even numbered group especially with a smaller flock, which many backyard keepers will have. The more chickens you have the less this will happen because they will form their smaller social groups much like us

we dont have a large property so no. they typically free range in our backyard
10 square feet is enough? Sounds like a minimum to me.

yes it is a minimum
So you don't need a rooster to have peace?
Odd numbers?
10 square feet per chicken. And yet, in egg farms, the caged hens are given an A4 sized amount of space to live their miserable lives in.
